Notes/Commercial Description:
”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

12oz bottle into a snifter

A: Pours a hazy amber color with two fingers of head that recedes fairly quickly to a thin film.

S: Lots of dark fruit - plums and figs mostly. I get a bit of citrus as well.

T: Again, strong dark fruit but now with toffee as well. Not overly sweet, though. I get some peppery spice with a bit of nutmeg. Appropriate booziness for the style.

M: A bit on the thin side with strong carbonation.

O: A solid quad.

A - Pours a cloudy amber orange with a half-finger of frothy off-white head. The head fades fairly quickly leaving behind some lace.

S - Aroma is a mix of sweet caramel malts and caidu sugar, with some dark fruits, Belgian yeast, spices, some light fruits, and booze.

T - Starts off with some sweet caramel malts and Belgian candi sugars with some sweet figs, raisins, and other dark fruits. Through the middle, some deeper dark fruit flavor comes through with some Belgian yeast flavor and some spices. The finish is a mix of dark fruit and Belgian yeast esters and spices with some candi sugars and a bit of booze.

M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a touch thick with a warming and sweet finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice balanced Quad. Good balance of sweet flavors and Belgian yeast character and body.

Picked this up in Ponderay, Idaho. From a 750 ml brown caged and corked bottle. Pours out a cloudy amber hue, which turns to bright light ruby when held to direct light. Tall tight foamy light beige head that settles to a thin cap.

Rich sweet toffee and toasted bread on the nose, dates and figs, some caramelized sugar, and pear.

Warm alcohol and spice up front in the flavour, rich bready malt, mild toffee, dates, black currants, apple and pear, with a clean light spicy finish.

The body is light, yet is juxtaposed by a fuller smooth creamy mouthfeel, with some effervescent carbonation.

Impressive, and seems greater than the sum of its parts, which are formidable to begin with. A lucky grab at Yokes while I was stocking up on IPA's, worth seeking out.

Pours dark brown, thin white head. Fruity esters tickling the nose before I'm done pouring the glass. Malty caramel aroma with some fruit, smells like tart green apples.

Spicy Esters up front, almost hot on the tongue, mellowed out by a smooth malty finish. Esters linger, roll around with excess carbonation screaming "I am Belgian!". I get it already!

Mmm, another sip. The heat dies away. This is over 10%? I can't tell from the taste.

High carbonation level, gassy mouthfeel. This beer requires a vigorous pour to smooth it out. Methinks I was a bit timid with the bottle and left little head and a sharp bite on the palate. Abuse this one as you pour.

I'm going to be here for a while puzzling this out. Comes at you strong with the yeast derived flavors, threatens to shake its alcohol fist at you, then cracks a smile and invites you in with the smooth maltiness. The finish doesn't let you off the hook though, it gives a parting shot to remind you what you're dealing with.

Actually quite drinkable for a Quad, I would gladly have another.

Poured a very light colour for a quad. This is only my second or third quad, but I know the colour is supposed to be darker. It's sort of a yellowish red. The head was enormous for such a high-alcohol beer. I'm not sure how it was possible. I had trouble pouring it gently enough to get a decent amount of liquid in my glass without it foaming over. I'm fast becoming a fan of quads. Perfect for someone who likes the high alcohol and intense flavour of trippels, but dislikes coriander. This one is pretty good, but it is not as good as the last one I had, The Reverend. Sorry to get so personal in my reviews, but I like to give as useful a review as possible by giving my background in the style. This one is just a bit too bitter and dry for a quad. It tastes like it's been dry-hopped. From what I've read, I don't feel like this is the idea of a quad. The last quad I had was much better balanced. This one is quite good as well, but not at the same level. A really good quad doesn't need as much spicing as this one has, in my opinion, but then again my opinion is truly a humble one. I'm a total noob to the style. So, take that with a grain of salt.
