Notes/Commercial Description:
”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

Poured into a snifter. Thanks, Cliff. You know how to pick 'em.

A: Opaque amber with a tan one finger head that lingers. Extensive lacing.

S: Belgian yeast, apricots, dark fruits, bready malts, pepper.

T: Follows nose. Smooth. A bit watery. A slight smokey taste. Dry finish.

M: Medium to heavy, nicely carbonated; frothy.

O: A worthy quad. Very tasty. A bit thinner than I prefer, but still a smooth drinker. Let it warm for maximum taste.

First I would like to state that this is a tremendous beer. The flavors are great despite a bit of a weak appearance as far as Quads go. But the head makes up for it! Big sturdy head with sustenance and lacing galore! This beer actually looks like a brown English ale really. Nice brown color, but it lacks darker red and brownish black beautiful Belgian murky look.

A pleasant sweet malty aroma is juxtaposed to a very malty flavorful caramel taste. This will remind one greatly of St. Bernardus 12 which is thee beer of beers although 6th is a bit thinner but not by too much. In summary, this malty caramel flavored beer is excellent. This is one of the best. In a head to head comparison with St B 12 and 6th. 5th is the less rich brew of the two. 5th runs like a drier less malty sweet fruit quad. 6th finishes with an almost coca cola like flavor. Personally i like 12, but I agree with those who purpost that 6th really holds its own special place in the world of quads.

The texture is a little thin and fizzy for me, but it has a creamy texture in their that makes up for it quite though. Hats off to Boulevard of Kansas City. You're pitchin' in the big leagues now!

This beer deserves the best. I recommend the sounds of Charlie Parker's movie soundtrack "The Bird" or else Count Basie "The Atomic Basie" if you want a little more swing, but Kansas City all the way. How about even pairing it with Karryn Allison's 'From Paris to Rio' she's been a KC perennial in the KC Jazz scene.

A:two finger head with scattered lacing on an amber with golden copper hues.

S: nice full dark fruit aroma though the individual fruit isn't really discernible. A little yeasty.

T: not as sweet as many quads. Dark fruit, yeast and breads but actually pretty simple.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: a little different from other quads I have had. I like that it is less sweet but its a little too simple.

12oz bottle, best by 7/27/13. Pours a cloudy amber with a big fluffy off white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet caramel malts, dark fruit, wood and some alcohol. It's a little subdued.

The flavor is sweet toasted caramel malts with dark fruits and a dry light bitter alcohol finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, an OK quad. It's kind of sweet with rather sharp alcohol.

outstanding beer, as all the smokestack series have been. i got a 120z. bottle of this for less than 3 bucks, what a deal! pours into a thick stemmed chalice a deep mahogany color with brown and red forces combining in stunning beauty. a thick tan head comprised of very large bubbles rests casually on top. smells very rich, caramel, toffee, belgian yeast, brown sugar, and raisins are all involved in a very complex aromatic experience. flavor is amazing too, for awhile i was thinking fruits like figs or dates as the label suggests. it really does have that dried sweet middle eastern fruits kind of flavor going on, but it also tastes very similar to those bit-o-honey candies you still see around sometimes. very very intriguing and delicious. intoxicating as hell at 10.5% and so yummy, be careful, this is a sipper despite its down easy feel. carbonation is medium but takes on a very laid back characteristic. medium body is perfect. its sweet in the finish, and warm from the alcohol, but not unpleasant in either sense. this is one of the best american quads i've ever had. really.
