Notes/Commercial Description:
”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

12 oz. bottled purchased in the greater Washington D.C. area, 2013 vintage and best by 5/16/15 poured into a Delirium Tremens snifter, drank 10/31/13 over an hour

A: 2/3 - red-auburn coloration, moderate clarity (cannot see and read through), initial white rocky/soapy head on first pour resolved into 1/2 finger glass lacing with residuals clinging to the glass --> modertae-to-high carbonation for style; thick alcohol legs as expected for 10.5% ABV

S: 9/12 - Belgian-yeast stone fruit esters: plums, raisins, cherries, sour apples; small amount of Noble hop aroma

T: 16/20 - on the front of the tongue, there is a moderate sweetness as some fruit flavors - plum, raisin and apple; in the middle of the mouth, these flavors developed into impressible malt complexity with some alcohol complexity and Sytrian Goldings hop character for balance; impressively little aftertaste for the intense malt complexity

M: 4/5 - big, chewy body (provided by the high alcohol content); slightly high carbonation for style but makes the flavors pop

O: 9/10 - one of my favorite Belgian quads, which was validated by a blind tasting against some of the best Belgian quads (Westy XII, St. Bernardus, etc.), where this was my favorite; at 10.5% with the intense malt complexity, it's crazy dry, which I love; I also love that this beer is released year-round, which is awesome --> highly recommended!

Bought from Central Market in a Pick 6.
Poured from bottle into a Maredsous chalice.
(Review from notes)

A - Nice fizzy carbonation. Amber orange hue.

S - Sweet and spicy orange, coriander.

T - Slight sweet front, bitter back. Some hops, but they mellowed with honey. The alcohol is well-hidden.

M - Fairly thick, kind of oily. Fizzy going down.

Summary - A proper Belgian. I have a higher standard for Tripels and Quads (so many great ones out there), and this one is a good Quad.

750 ml bottle into chalice, best before 3/2015. Pours lightly cloudy reddish orange color with a 1 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, fig, plum, pear, apple, grape, toast, brown sugar, clove, herbal, pepper, candi sugar, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of caramel, raisin, fig, plum, pear, apple, toast, brown sugar, candi sugar, brown bread, clove, pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruits, caramel, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, clove, pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and malt flavors; with a good malt/spiciness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly slick and moderately crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent quadrupel style! All around great balance and complexity of flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
