Notes/Commercial Description:
”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

A-Very cloudy deep orange, almost ruby. Two finger head that attempts to leave some lacing.

S-Yeast, clove, banana, dark fruits, some alcohol.

T-Clove, banana, yeast, caramel, dark fruits. Nice spice. Not much bitterness.

M-Medium bodied, well carbonated and the alcohol from the nose is hidden here.

O-A good quad. But it doesn't hold a candle to the belgain/trappist ones.

Poured from a 12 oz.(poor person size) to a Burnt Hickory Brewery snifter at 60-65 degrees
A- Clear red-copper hue with a wispy but abundant beige-gold head that dissipates quickly as anticipated.
S- Rich sweetness with a hint of clove spiciness, high alcohol content apparent.
T- Malty and caramely with the alcoholic bite that is smooth and at no point bitter. he alcohol bite serves this beer well as it gives a warm feeling, leaving you with a raisin like taste .Sweetness without overt fruity or overpoweringly caramel.
M- Light, highly carbonated, very smooth and bubbly.
O- This is a good, true beer. It's not a sneaky buzz. You are keenly aware that you are, in fact drinking beer and needn't play is it will sit you down. That being said the flavor is superb, well-rounded without frills, which is easy to appreciate.

Poured from a 750ml brown bottle into a clear glass snifter. 2013 vintage. Purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Deep brown hue with short 1/2 finger oatmeal head which leaves behind no lacing.

S: Rum raisin, prune, date, and caramel-toffee blend with a light herbal hoppiness and mild alcohol aroma

T: Delicious lush flavors of dark fruit -- raisin, date, plum/prune -- accented by soft dark caramel sweetness and finished with mild-moderate bittering without much hop flavor, maybe a flash of herbal/earthy character. The yeast character is reasonably light with only soft fruity esters. Alcohol presence is mild, pretty amazing for a fresh quad.

M: Silky smooth with light warming. Body is medium-full to full with low carbonation. A joy to sip.

O: Stellar quad that I hope will improve with a few years -- this was fresh and extremely enjoyable so it will be interesting to see what 3-4 years of cellaring will do.
