”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

From the corked, caged 750 ml. bottle marked Batch no. 613081-2-03-2015. Sampled on April 29, 2014 at about 50 degrees.

It is certainly a highly attractive beer to look at with its mahogany amber pour and short-loved off-white head. Good clarity and just a lovely color.

The roasted malts are evident on the nose before anything else. But they are quickly followed up by a cherry-tart fruity character and a surround-sound yeast element. A little boozy but not offensive.

Medium to full syrupy body. Some acidity. It grates the tongue a little.

Like the aroma the roasted malts kick things off with a return play by the cherry-based defensive receiver. There is this definite pungent tart bite that makes me wince briefly but I get used to it. Some dry afterbite for certain. A little booze but that's to be expected at 10.5%. I wonder how it would be at this time next year with proper cellaring
