Notes/Commercial Description:
The classic India Pale Ale is a traveler’s beer, aggressively hopped to withstand the long, hot ocean voyage to the British East Indies. Our Double-Wide I.P.A. also travels well, and is right at home in the most exotic ports of call of the Midwest. While this modern-day prairie schooner may not resemble a graceful sailing sloop, our liberal hopping regimen does make her virtually “twister-proof,” with toffee and caramel notes balancing out the lingering bitterness. Enjoy this beer fresh to best appreciate the complex blending of hop aromas, ranging from minty to citrusy, with subtle hints of pine.

Enjoyed out of a 12 oz brown bottle with a "best by" date of 10/29/14. I think the lead time between bottling and the best by date on this beer is six months, so this bottle seems to be about two and a half months old. Poured into a Speigelau IPA glass.

Appearance - Pours a tawny cinnamon brown-red hue with enough haze to prevent me from seeing through the glass. There is just a slightly lighter orangish bit around the edges where the light passes through at the bottom of the glass. Atop the body sits a creamy three finger head with some larger bubbles that luscious and foamy. Retention is quite good, with the head not really dissipating until I begin drinking it, leaving sticky lace mottled around the sides of the glass.

Smell - Aroma is nice and citrusy, with tropical fruit undertones consisting of orange zest and subtle pineapple are the main players, as well as some notes of pine and herbs. There is also a pretty prevalent foundation of caramel malt providing a bready sweet fragrance. Not quite the pungent hop bomb I personally prefer, but it gives clues that it's going to be well-balanced.

Taste - As suspected, the flavor is neither overrun by juicy fruit or malt, and the pine that was hinted at in the aroma is much more prevalent than it was initially. Nice bready pale malt with just a hint of sweetness in the form of caramel and toffee, but not enough to overpower the presence of grapefruit, citrus zest and pineapple. As with the smell, no one element dominates, and the bitterness is just enough to balance with the sweetness of the malt.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied and moderate carbonation with a somewhat bready feel on the palate and easy-drinking in spite of the higher ABV.

Overall, this is a very well-done IPA that stands out from the rest of the pack in that it isn't boozy or bordering on astringent with it's use of hops like some DIPAs can be. That said, it also lacks some of that pungent juicy hop kick. It's a fine line to walk, and this one does it a bit more conservatively than most. However, that makes for an very drinkable brew that pairs well with a lot of different types of food.

Dark, caramel coloration follows an explosion of foam head that just fills the glass on a careful pour. Annoyingly high retention, takes nearly 10 minutes for the foam to turn into something drinkable. Fluffy head texture and messy lacing on the glass.

Big malt backing, syrup and caramel malt upfront with red fruity esters. A pithy citrus and pine hop backing. Some herbal and perfume-like rosemary and mint. Breathy alcohol comes out near the end.

As the nose goes so does this beer, thick and full caramel malt with enough vinous and red fruit esters lurking in there to make me shudder a bit. Hops are lacking or faded, I can't tell which since there is still a dark tangerine and piney flavor to this with a slight herbal backing, no tea or oxidated flavors here just very mild. Medium bitterness but lacks enough push to contain the malt.

That huge carbonation from the head does nothing for the mouthfeel and this thing is quite flat over the palate. Sluggish body as well. Medium bitterness and drying and the alcohol doesn't come out as much as in the nose. More hops would've fixed this.

Just not feeling this one, I've had syrupy and big DIPAs before (Chillwave, Hopslam, Hi-Res, etc.) but this one is just lacking in balance on multiple fronts. Also way too much vinous fruit and berry esters which I loathe except in Belgians.

Appearance is a hazy orange color with a big two finger head.
Aroma is sweet, bready, caramel covered citrus, really complex nose.
Taste is caramel malt balanced with sweet citrus fruit and herbs.
Mouthfeel is medium to full with perfect carbonation.
Really pleasant lingering bitterness and floral flavors well after each sip.
Also hides the alcohol well.
I don't have a bunch of complaints with this beer.
Well done.
