Notes/Commercial Description:
The classic India Pale Ale is a traveler’s beer, aggressively hopped to withstand the long, hot ocean voyage to the British East Indies. Our Double-Wide I.P.A. also travels well, and is right at home in the most exotic ports of call of the Midwest. While this modern-day prairie schooner may not resemble a graceful sailing sloop, our liberal hopping regimen does make her virtually “twister-proof,” with toffee and caramel notes balancing out the lingering bitterness. Enjoy this beer fresh to best appreciate the complex blending of hop aromas, ranging from minty to citrusy, with subtle hints of pine.

picked up the mix four gift set with the glass in chicago the other day. enjoyed from the smokestack glass. bottle best before 5/19/2013

a - brew poured a deep brown with some reddish mahogany highlights. there was a full 3 fingers of massive frothy ipa head in the glass that dissolved leaving huge chunks of ipa head on the side of the glass.

s - smells like a pine cone with some good caramel maltiness equally as present. powerful smell but the hops are definitely in check with the malts.

t - really nice toasted nutty flavor with a good mix of hops and malts. not the hophead dream by any stretch of the imagination. nutmeg and caramel. really nice flavor despite not being a slap in the face of hoppy bitterness.

m - medium to full bodied, fairly chewy. nice carbonation as well.

o - overall, i dig it. not a hop head dream, but nice to have a solid iipa that is a bit more malt forward. really tasty and enjoyable...would definitely have again.

The pours a caramel, honey color with 3 finger carbonation. Foam fades slowly but does not keep residual carbonation at the same level through the drink. Malt on the nose with very lite hoppy-ness, does not have the floral hoppy aroma that you would want or expect with an Imperial IPA. I have had the single wide and honestly prefer that to the double wide. Mouthfeel was flat and the finish leaves you with a poor aftertaste. Taste makes the aroma, with more malt than hops.

12 FLUID OUNCE bottle
Served in a Boulevard tulip glass
Best by 05/22/14

A - It pours a reddish amber color with tiny specks of yeast suspended in it. A normal pour yielded half a glass of tan head that stuck around and to the sides of the glass.

S - It has an orange tea smell.

T - I taste some toasted malt and floral hops. There is no bitterness whatsoever.

M - Medium

O - It tastes like an old IPA, but the best by date is a month and a half out. Unless that date is six months from bottling it should be good. I am not impressed with this offering. It tastes more like a red ale.

"Hops rip the roof off Double-Wide I.P.A., their aroma redolent of apricot and piney woods. Caramel malts balance a whirlwind of citrusy bitterness, winding down to a long, serene finish." Brewed in the style of an American Double IPA, available as a year round release in 12 oz. 4 packs, in 750 ml. bottles and on draft.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Boulevard tulip. Served above 58º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a copper cream head of a frothy foam consistency over a orange amber body with flecked sediment and otherwise high clarity. Retention is very good, lacing is spotty, but medium and fluffy. 4.5

(Smell) Bold grapefruit, apricot and peppery hop notes up front with a solid bitterness over a smooth toasted caramel body. The aroma is clean and well-balanced. Potency is medium-high. 4.25

(Taste) Very hop forward, the hop profile is peppery and abrasively bitter with a lesser tropical fruit and apricot profile than in the aroma, but still moderately present in the flavor. The malt profile is a sweet, thinly syrupy, lightly toasted caramel malt, very clean with minimal graininess or off-character. An enjoyable flavor especially for bitter hop lovers. The hop profile was slightly less well preserved in the flavor than in the aroma. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is smooth, thinly syrupy and peppery. Carbonation adds a frothiness and smooth foamy texture to the mouthfeel. Body is medium+ for the style, medium/heavy overall. Alcohol presence is medium at strongest, fairly well concealed behind the bitterness of the beer. Balance is decidedly in favor of bitterness over sweetness, with a bolder hop bitterness than flavor. 3.75

(Overall) Consider Double-Wide a Double IPA worth giving a try, especially for those who like a brutally bitter beer. I think that the hop aromas were right on the money but sadly weren't as well presented in the flavor, which was simpler and less enjoyable as a result. Despite these minor quips, Double-Wide is still incredibly enjoyable, especially when enjoyed as fresh as possible. 4
