Notes/Commercial Description:
The classic India Pale Ale is a traveler’s beer, aggressively hopped to withstand the long, hot ocean voyage to the British East Indies. Our Double-Wide I.P.A. also travels well, and is right at home in the most exotic ports of call of the Midwest. While this modern-day prairie schooner may not resemble a graceful sailing sloop, our liberal hopping regimen does make her virtually “twister-proof,” with toffee and caramel notes balancing out the lingering bitterness. Enjoy this beer fresh to best appreciate the complex blending of hop aromas, ranging from minty to citrusy, with subtle hints of pine.

Clear red colored beer with a small tan colored head.

Smells hoppy with mostly a leather and tobacco scent. Sweet and floral with some citrus. Some woody and strong tea scent.

Starts out stoutly bitter with a strong tea after taste. Malty and wood in the mouth. Tobacco and leather with with wood and tea with a quite stout bitterness.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall an OK not very fruity tasting DIPA.

12oz bottle (best by 05/14/2013) into a tulip glass.

Pours a rich deep semi opaque tawny red-tinged brown. Nice fluffy head, great lacing.

Nose is deep with a very sweet malty character dominating. Definitely not a West Coast DIPA. Some light citrus hops are there but much less than you'd expect for the style.

Very agreeable and balanced mouthfeel with nice weight, the attack is pretty clean followed by a rush of big bitter hops and lots of dark sweet toasty malt that washes over the palate and has nice persistence. This is substantial but wears its 8.5% ABV well. Very drinkable with great clarity of powerful flavor.

Overall a very good DIPA that is very deeply pitched and malt driven. A pleasure to drink but not for those who are expecting the aromatic fireworks and complexity of the better West Coast examples.

A-hazy orange amber color with a huge tan head and good lacing

S-malt, pine, caramel, citrus

T-malt, caramel, lemon, earthiness, mild bitter hop finish

F-medium body with moderate carbonation, smooth and creamy mouthfeel

O-a flavorful beer but I prefer more intense hop flavor and bitterness

This beer surprises the nw ipa drinker with a big bold ipa flavor without the strict bitter. The cork in the bottle should tell the story. This brewer cares when and how you enjoy it. Enjoy it often, enjoy it now. Don't take my word for it, try for yourself.

On-tap and poured into a pint glass.

A: Amber colored with a substantial head...2-3 fingers. Nice lacing.

S: I didn't get much from the smell other than alcohol and some bread. Somewhat puzzling for a DIPA.

T: A little bit of the hops come through, but this beer is very malty for an IPA.

M: Good carbonation and tingle, but a little light for a DIPA.

O: I have to say I was disappointed with this beer. Unfortunately for me, the highlight was the appearance. After that it was downhill. Some people would probably really like it, but I like my IPA's to be hop heavy...especially the DIPA's. Too much malt flavor and too light for a DIPA.

A - amber with a huge, dense, foamy, brown head that has great retention

S - bread, caramel, grapefruit, pineapple, alcohol

T - caramel, sugar, bread, spicy, citrus, pineapple, mildly bitter, alcohol

M - warm, full bodied, well carbonated

This is a rather malty DIPA where the hops can barely keep up. The alcohol is noticeable throughout, but it's not overwhelming. I prefer my DIPAs to be a little hoppier with less of a dark bread maltiness. This was good, but not my favorite. I did enjoy the pineapple notes, however.

Pours a cloudy amber-brown with a fluffy off-white head that settles to a thick cap. Big aromas of pine resin, grapefruit, and orange peel. Nice, but not too unique. Taste is similarly pine resin and grapefruit heavy, with a substantially sweet caramel malt profile and moderate citrus bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, maybe a touch sticky, with a bit-over-medium body and ample carbonation. Decent DIPA, but nothing new or exciting.

A: Pours a deep orange liquid with some haze in it. The off-white head with uneven sized bubbles is about two fingers high and sturdy. Thick lacings on the glass.

S: Lots of earthy tones up front. Cooked vegetables. Red fruits and yeasts. Lots of yeast. Bubble gum and a sourness that resembles what I can find in many Belgian beers.

T: Very dominant burning alcohol. It has a dry aftertaste with lots of grapefruit peel. But there is also that sourness that I'm not very fond of. I'm actually thinking "has this bottle gone bad?".

M: Medium body with medium carbonation.

O: An average IPA which is very dominated by the alcohol. I might have been unlucky to catch a bad bottle though.

12oz bottle (best by 3/20/2013) into a tulip. Pours a glowing orange amber w/ a big fluffy beige head, great sticky lacing.

Aroma is fruity and malty balanced by resinous hops and a trace of pine. Caramel malt and earthy mango/apricot.

Not surprisingly, taste leads off with a heavy malt presence. But it's well-balanced by copious bitter hops. Fruity caramel and grapefruit converge.

Mouthfeel is thick and chewy, full-bodied.

Overall a solid DIPA that expertly balances a heavy malt presence with plenty of hops.

A: cloudy amber with thin head and solid lacing
S: dull malty with hint of hoppy aroma
T: heavy alcohol taste that's masked well with a malty, nutty, sweet fall taste
M: smooth entrance with carbonated tickle finished by a dry bitter finish
O: perfect double IPA for Octoberfest. A warming amber DIPA with a fall worthy presentation.
