Style | ABV
Quadrupel (Quad) |  11.80% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
Based loosely on the Smokestack Series’ The Sixth Glass, this abbey-style quadrupel is separated into a number of oak bourbon barrels where it ages for varying lengths of time, some for up to three years. Cherries are added to make up for the “angel's share” of beer lost during barrel aging. Selected barrels are then blended for optimum flavor. The resulting beer retains only very subtle cherry characteristics, with toffee and vanilla notes coming to the fore.

look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4

Appearance: Beautiful cherry-red mixed with brown color. Big fuzzy head.

Smell: Actually smells a lot like a lambic to me, a little funky. Must be the oak-aging. Also slightly boozy.

Taste: Almost as if the sweetness was extracted from a bourbon and implanted into a quad. Lots of yeast, a touch of vanilla, cherries come through slightly as it warms. Oak-aging is apparent. Alcohol is well hidden, but still has a minimal booze taste. The finish is loooong. Bourbon burn is not noticeable until several seconds after swallowing.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth. The bourbon bites just a bit after the finish.

Drinkability: The complex flavor would make this easy to drink all night, but the alcohol doesn't allow that.

Notes: This was my first bourbon barrel-aged beer. I was a little skeptical, but ended up very pleased. The bourbon character complements the yeast-heavy beer. I also have not had many oak-aged beers in general. That aspect gave this beer a subtle bready, funky texture. I hope I can find this again for a special treat.

Bottle generously gifted by dirtinabottle, brough to share at the Ithaca Luminous release.

Pours a murky red brown color, clear in some spots. Not much head, only a little bit of lacing.

Aromas include brown sugar, alcohol, cherries, green apple, and caramel.

Pretty similar flavor. Nice subtle cherry overtones here, with some Belgian fruity yeast esters as well. Toasted bread, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, and a subtle hint of bourbon. The alcohol is somewhat present near the end but is not fatiguing. Very sweet.

Medium bodied, slightly thin, expected a little more from the body. The alcohol creeps up on you a bit. Sticky sweet mouthfeel, very low carbonation.

First beer tried from Boulevard, this was quite nice. Some more time aging would make this one flawless.

look: 3 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Appearance: Opaque tan color. One inch head stuck around for a few minutes before disappearing completely.

Smell: The smell is somewhere between a fruity red wine and stout.

Taste: Very strong tastes. Initial wave is ale (malt, a touch of bitterness), followed by cherries (sour, red wine-like), capped by bourbon and an alcohol bite which fades after a few seconds. The taste is complex but not overwhelming, as the distinct aspects come one after another rather than all at once.

Mouthfeel: Somewhat thick, medium carbonation.

Overall: Good complex beer for sipping, but like wine you do not drink a lot of this at a time.
