Man, I've been looking forward to this one for awhile, now. Glad it's finally out. Their Sixth Glass is a helluva quad, in it's own right. That reminds me, I need to put up a review of that. Anyway, here we go...
This looks brown at first. Hold it up to a light source though, and it is a beautiful cherry red color. Nice finger and a half of medium thickness head sits on top. Retention is pretty darn good and so is the lacing.
I can smell the bourbon here, but it only hints at it, it's not overpowering. Nice vanilla and brown sugar notes. Cherries and other dark fruits. Nice sweet maltiness. Toffee scents. Hints of oak and a little spiciness.
Not nearly as sweet as it smells, and that's a good thing. Good malty backbone with a spicy kick. Hints of bourbon flavor. Oak, vanilla and a nice level of smoke. Nice cherry tartness. Hints of brown sugar and toffee.
Medium to heavy thickness. Very creamy smooth. Flows down quite nicely.
Very drinkable now, but I think it will be even better in 6 months to a year. Although the 11.8% ABV is pretty well hidden, there is still a touch of heat here. I'd like to see that mellow out a wee bit more.
It is worth the wait. Another excellent entry in Boulevard's Smokestack Series!

BOTTLE #1497 of 11248
This new batch has toned down the bourbon presence. It has amped up the cherry presence, also. Lots more cherries in the nose and taste. The rest of it follows the same path as last years release.
I anticipate this one aging even better than last years. I've got a couple bottles of this one in the cellar and hope to not touch them for about 18 months, at least.

Bottle 2013, aged 1 year. Pours a light colored head, at least four-fingers, gone fast, medium lacing. Color of the beer is lighter than most quads, amber and medium dark Carmel tones..the smell is Carmel, and malt, with some fruity hints. Taste is Carmel, vanilla, and candied sugar, with hints of pecan. Light body for the style which makes the mouthfeel pleasant for such a strong abv. Overall really good, just not great. Simple profile for the style. Age on this bottle, and the way Otha's smoothed out, makes me think this one could go much longer and do well. Pair with dessert, sweeter-dishes, beef, venison, red-meat..cheese pairing would be Gouda, cow's milk cheeses.
