Style | ABV
Quadrupel (Quad) |  11.80% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
Based loosely on the Smokestack Series’ The Sixth Glass, this abbey-style quadrupel is separated into a number of oak bourbon barrels where it ages for varying lengths of time, some for up to three years. Cherries are added to make up for the “angel's share” of beer lost during barrel aging. Selected barrels are then blended for optimum flavor. The resulting beer retains only very subtle cherry characteristics, with toffee and vanilla notes coming to the fore.

750ml bottle into a tulip.

A: Pours a cloudy dark amber color. The head is two fingers high, and off-white in shade; its texture is fizzy and the retention is poor. No lacing on the glass.

S: Aromatically, it's loaded with cherries, bourbon, brown sugar, oak, vanilla, and banana. Touches of molasses, too. While the nose is quite sweet, the alcohol is hidden superbly.

T: Sweet cherries to start quickly give way to a brown sugar middle. Spicy touches of yeast on the back end. I'm pretty damn impressed at how well the booze in concealed - problem is, it's concealed by a HUGE wave of sweetness. Holy frig, this is pretty much a dessert beer. But a good one, though! With a bit more perceptible complexity, I might have given the taste a 4.

M: Very full bodied, rich, sweet, and decadent - a shame the finish is a bit too astringent. Carbonation is borderline intense, doing its best to cut through the sweetness slightly. Plain and simple, this is a sipper, but like I said, it's not remotely boozy.

O: In small doses, it's fantastic. It's a richly sweet dessert beer, but I honestly can't drink a lot of this. Honestly, I'm let down: normally Boulevard's 750 are both rich and deceptively drinkable, this is just rich. Absolutely worth trying, just split it with several people before hand.

Bottle generously gifted by dirtinabottle, brough to share at the Ithaca Luminous release.

Pours a murky red brown color, clear in some spots. Not much head, only a little bit of lacing.

Aromas include brown sugar, alcohol, cherries, green apple, and caramel.

Pretty similar flavor. Nice subtle cherry overtones here, with some Belgian fruity yeast esters as well. Toasted bread, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, and a subtle hint of bourbon. The alcohol is somewhat present near the end but is not fatiguing. Very sweet.

Medium bodied, slightly thin, expected a little more from the body. The alcohol creeps up on you a bit. Sticky sweet mouthfeel, very low carbonation.

First beer tried from Boulevard, this was quite nice. Some more time aging would make this one flawless.

look: 3 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Appearance: Opaque tan color. One inch head stuck around for a few minutes before disappearing completely.

Smell: The smell is somewhere between a fruity red wine and stout.

Taste: Very strong tastes. Initial wave is ale (malt, a touch of bitterness), followed by cherries (sour, red wine-like), capped by bourbon and an alcohol bite which fades after a few seconds. The taste is complex but not overwhelming, as the distinct aspects come one after another rather than all at once.

Mouthfeel: Somewhat thick, medium carbonation.

Overall: Good complex beer for sipping, but like wine you do not drink a lot of this at a time.
