Bottle No. 05964 of 10630
In anticipation of this first bottle of BBQ, I made my way out of work a few hours early, assuredly driving the entire route with nothing less than a giddy smile splashed across my face. I was somewhat short on time, so I skipped my normal strolling of the aisles, and turned quickly to the newly created section of specialty beers. No six-packs here - all big, mostly seasonal or short-run beers. The Boulevard rack was well-stocked, each column lined with those from the Smokestack Series, save one, which was nearly bare, until my eyes came to meet this single bottle. After a long wait, I'm ready for some good 'Q.
Half an inch of frothy head is gently pocked by emerging bubbles, ever-so slowly fading away to an eighth of an inch. The nose is heavy of bourbon, mostly oak and floral notes, with a strong scent of alcohol. Murky brown, but with moon-like crescents of orange around each edge. Silky smooth crossing he lips and then sitting on the tongue like a feather - one that tickles the back of your throat, making you breathe a woody oak, fruit, and bourbon fire, warming your mouth from within - kind of like a serving of bananas foster. The infusion of bourbon and a light tartness from the cherries though, completely compromises and overrides the character of the foundation flavors that I enjoyed so much in the Quad, rather than accompanying them. While completely satisfying and a whole new take on this beer, I was looking for a "build" on the Sixth Glass.
And as one might expect at nearly 12% - half of the bottle in, I'm well on my way.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into an oversized wine glass. Head starts out as fizzy on the initial pour, but quickly settles into a large fluffy tan head. Deep amber-brown body.
Some cherry and a lot of bourbon in the nose, with typical quad notes lurking in the background. Definitely some alcohol present in the nose as well.
Tastes wonderful and exactly how you would expect. Definitely a quad backbone with bourbon and cherry vanilla floating on top. Some pepperiness, probably from the higher ABV.
Mouth seems a pinch thin, but swirling in the glass helps.
A really great beer, enjoying the last night in our current house. Lots of memories here, and this beer will be one of them.
