Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: jdubjacket on 07-11-2008

Based loosely on the Smokestack Series’ The Sixth Glass, this abbey-style quadrupel is separated into a number of oak bourbon barrels where it ages for varying lengths of time, some for up to three years. Cherries are added to make up for the “angel's share” of beer lost during barrel aging. Selected barrels are then blended for optimum flavor. The resulting beer retains only very subtle cherry characteristics, with toffee and vanilla notes coming to the fore.

Pours a reddish brown with one finger khaki head that had minor head and lace thanks to some lively carbonation. Tart cherries do come through in the aroma, as does some slightly boozy oakines and hints of dark fruits like toffee and a little bit of yeast. Smooth, medium to heavy bodied, the yeast and barrel aging keep the beer smooth and not too sharp, although there is a crisp finish as the beer has a good amount of carbonation. Great balance of vanilla, toffee, and other sugary sweetness and some figs and dark fruit and those tart cherries have some play as well. Great sipper and the booze is kept under wraps so it's not too harsh as it warms.

Pours a dark brown with a surprisingly large tan head. I usually assume beers of this ABV will have little head, but this has a full one.

Smell first is like booze, I assume this is the smell of bourbon, which I am not overly familiar with, but have smelled this in other bourbon barrel beers. Bit of fruit and caramel and toffee as well.

Nice complex flavor profile. I can taste the bourbon and the cherries, there is brown sugar and the Belgian candy sugar as well. Finishes with an alcohol warming.

Nice and smooth feel, pretty solid too.

Very drinkable for the ABV. There is a lot of flavor here, about the only complaint I have is that the sweetness takes away a bit from the Belgian character, but that is a very minor complaint. I feel that Boulevard nails Belgian beers better than any US brewery I have tried, and this one is no exception. It is very authentic to the style, had I tried this now knowing who made it, I'd swear it came from Belgium.
