Style | ABV
Quadrupel (Quad) |  11.80% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
Based loosely on the Smokestack Series’ The Sixth Glass, this abbey-style quadrupel is separated into a number of oak bourbon barrels where it ages for varying lengths of time, some for up to three years. Cherries are added to make up for the “angel's share” of beer lost during barrel aging. Selected barrels are then blended for optimum flavor. The resulting beer retains only very subtle cherry characteristics, with toffee and vanilla notes coming to the fore.

"Purchased at John's Grocery in Iowa City. This beer pours a dark brown/reddish color with a thick head. Aroma of sugar, cherries, oak, and alcohol. Flavor of cherries, sugar, and a whiskey flavor. A little too much for me. " It's been a while since I've had it so I wouldn't mind going back and revisiting a bottle to see if my tastes of changed.

2011-3 batch poured into Duvel Tulip

A-Beautiful dark, with a fizzy light head
S-Classic quad smell, but bourbon definitely poking through
T-Very well done quad. The bourbon takes a front seat, but does not overwhelm.
M-Good feel, a tiny bit thin, but it doesn't really take away from it.
O- Amazing offering from Boulevard. Looking forward to trying more of the smokestack series. 6th glass and bbq have been great so far. Cracking open a Seeyoulator sometime soon.

2011 Batch - Bottle No 23661
The appearance is caramel in color with minimal lacing.

It has a delightful cherry background to it with a caramel and toffee taste taking the foreground along with some vanilla oakiness. It is sweet. It is malty, bready and yeasty. It's pretty darn good. As with any quad, there is a serious taste of red fruits. In this beer in particular, I would describe them as cherry, plum, raisin, cherry and strawberries. I'm not picking up any bourbon flavor at all.

The mouthfeel is pretty thick with yeast.

This was a really enjoyable quad. I did expect to taste some bourbon though. Even without that, I think it stands among the best quads available.

It tastes an awful lot like Bourbon which you might like, however I did not find it appealing or palatable.

I don't see the connection to making beer taste like Bourbon. If you want to try this beer without buying it.. Take a glass of wine, and toss in a shot of bourbon.

2011 vintage. Poured at 55 degrees into tulip.

Appearance - The body is a rich brownish red with a healthy tan head capping it off. The head doesn't
stick around for too long, but leaves great wisps of lace as it dissipates.

Smell- Winey dark fruits, unsweetened cherries, a touch of fig, and just a touch of bourbon. The aroma is complex and balanced.

Taste - All the aroma components are present in the glass, but the bourbon barrels add a nice round woody warmth to the deep sweetness. Again, vinous dark fruits, a touch of dried fruit, and then an oaky note envelops the palate in warmth and slowly walks the sweetness into a long and lingering finish. It really is a work of art the way all the components of the base Quad compliment the oaky bourbon favors. This is a big beer with a very pronounced character, but it remains elegant throughout.

Mouthfeel - Slightly prickly active carbonation lends a light airy feel the body. It's quite an unusual sensation for a barrel and beer, as so many barrel beers are thick viscous monsters. This beer continues to carry itself in an elegant and approachable manner.

Overall - This is a very complex and intriguing brew. The marriage of classic Belgian Quad favors and bourbon barrels is perfect.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Snifter.

Appearance: Beautiful garnet with thick cream colored head and bubbly lacing.

Smell: Sour cherries, oak, musty earth, toffee, vanilla and some booziness.

Taste: The sweet toffee and plum Quad core of this beer is nicely balanced by sour cherries and strong oak characteristics. Some earthy and vanilla notes add to the complexity.

Feel: Very full yet effervescent body that Boulevard pulls off much better than most American craft brewers could even dream of. Very warming.

Overall: This is definitely better than the Sixth Glass core beer because the cherries and oak really help to combat the sweetness. (Not that the Sixth Glass is bad, it is great, just a wee bit too sweet). Boulevard is fantastic at Belgian beers and barrel aging, and this shows off both those strengths. Just docking it ever so slightly because I personally don't care for too much cherry.

Uncorked this 2011 750 ml bottle. I think I have had this for about 6 months.

Poured a rather light body for a quad. Still pretty dark reddish brown but clear.

Nose is a real high point with dark cherries, spice and caramel.

Taste is unique. Dark fruit such as cherries and plums. A tartness not often seen in a beer like this. An underlying sweetness that seems to balance this out. Slight notes of earth and malt. Very tasty. Slightly dry finish and not overly carbonated. Very tasty brew.

Minimal light head and minor lacing. Smells of yeast and bourbon. Warming alcohols, not much for hops, pretty strong stuff. I did not like this as much as the triple from Boulevard- perhaps it was just the bourbon barrel and my taste. Thought it was just OK.
