Style | ABV
Quadrupel (Quad) |  11.80% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
Based loosely on the Smokestack Series’ The Sixth Glass, this abbey-style quadrupel is separated into a number of oak bourbon barrels where it ages for varying lengths of time, some for up to three years. Cherries are added to make up for the “angel's share” of beer lost during barrel aging. Selected barrels are then blended for optimum flavor. The resulting beer retains only very subtle cherry characteristics, with toffee and vanilla notes coming to the fore.

2011 edition. Served in Chimay goblet in celebration of fortuitous employment news.
Well now, that's complex. Very interesting blending of bourbon, vanilla, oak and sour cherries all intermingling and taking turns.
A cherry red hue to the golden brown bourbon body. Very clean and clear. Soft dark head.
Flavor mimics aroma with the addition of the alcohol which adds a bourbon burn, warmth, spiciness.
Very creamy and smooth - a really nice feel.
The body and character are top notch. Such a smooth and easy drinking beer of such complexity and richness. Deserves the accolades it has received.

750ml bottle. This is from the '11 vintage. Batch #1 BBD 11/12. Served in my Boulevard tulip.

A: Ruby red to light brownish color. About a finger of head. Good carbonation for a high alcohol beer. Definitely getting smoe alcohol feet.

S: Smells of sour cherry, which kind of caught me off guard a bit. I get some woody notes. Also some touches of some vanilla.

T: Right on the tip of the tongue, you get tart dark cherry flavors. It almost reminds me of a Flanders Red, for a second, with the tartness. Then in the middle of the mouth the malt sweetness kicks in. And then the barrel aging. It's so complex. Lots of moving parts. Its not as thick as expected. Surprised by appearance.

M: Medium to full. Carbonated fairly well.

Poured from a bottle into a Lost Abbey longstemmed tulip.

Pours a ruddy garnet shade with a generous 2-3 finger head that dissipates rather quickly with absolutely zero lacing. The nose is straight up sour cherries. It has a real tart nose with a slight bit of "funk." Dark and candied fruit scents mix in nicely. The bourbon isn't overly apparent at this point. The taste is more cherries. Nice and tart, but far from sour. It's so well played. The bourbon again is subtle. It's not dominant, which, is actually good. Probably one of the best examples of well executed bourbon barreling. For a person that hates sours or quads...I'm diggin' this. The mouth is nice and crisp. Good carb, a nice tartness, and a finsih that's a tad bitter. The alcohol is indeed present at this stage. Overall, this is a winner. Want more.

A

2011 750ml into a tulip. Pours a deep ruddy garnet mahogany, decent mocha colored head required an encouraging pour, ok lacing.

Aroma of mild bourbon, distinct barrel vanilla, the cherries but some are chocolate covered and assorted dark fruits that have begun to rot. marvelous

Pleasantly sweet, hits the cusp of tart but stops at a dry twang. The alcohol is tiny solvent and appropriately so but not particularly burbony. Considerable leather soaked in the rotting fruits rides the aftertaste, tannins join in. The mouthfeel while not thin is wholly thinner than expected. Absolutely shines at room temp.
cheers

I picked up a 750 mL bottle of this a few months ago while passing through Mass and finally cracked it open last week, from notes.

Appearance is a dark brown color with a short off-white head. The nose on this has caramel, bourbon, wood, some cherry too. BBQ has taste with wood, quite a bit of bourbon and some vanilla. MMM, if you like quads and bourbon, this is a good choice. Mouthfeel is full, a velvet like texture. A very nice beer that lived up to its` hype for me.
