Quadrupel (Quad) |  11.80% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
Based loosely on the Smokestack Series’ The Sixth Glass, this abbey-style quadrupel is separated into a number of oak bourbon barrels where it ages for varying lengths of time, some for up to three years. Cherries are added to make up for the “angel's share” of beer lost during barrel aging. Selected barrels are then blended for optimum flavor. The resulting beer retains only very subtle cherry characteristics, with toffee and vanilla notes coming to the fore.

750 ml bottle was poured into an oversized wine glass.

Appearance: This beer poured an off white head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a murky brown color with vision of bubbles coming up the side of the glass.

Smell: Vanilla, spices, bready malts, oak, tart cherries, raisins, bananas, and a little booze. Smells awesome.

Taste: Vanilla, spices, bready malts, tart cherries, boozy alcohol, bananas, raisins, and oakiness.

Mputhfeel: Smooth, soft, boozy, full bodied, low carbonation, a little chewy, and tart.

Overall: Quad aged in bourbon barrels, yes please. A quad like sixth glass is solid, but age it in barrels for several years and that steps things up. 2011 batch was very delicious.

A- Murky brown with orange and crimson accents. Solid 2.5-3 finger off-white head that holds nicely given the 11.8 abv. Soapy lacing. Simply one of the finer looking quads i have seen.

S- an enticing mix of dark fruits featuring cherries, oak, vanilla, and some merlot-like character. Fruity esters with a hint of booze.

T- Yeah, full flavor from the get-go! The enormous notes of the dark fruits and esters generate a mind blowing flavor. The bourbon also lets itself be known, but it doesn't overshadow the impressive abbey-style characteristics of the tart cherries, figs, plums, apples, all along the subtle spice from the yeast. Some syrup notes as well. Flavor just comes at you in waves with a smooth finish. Complex yet balanced.

M- Impeccable feel that has a near perfect texture of mid body while making for easy (too damn easy) drinkability. Dry finish. Carbonation is light but present. Alcohol only adds to the depth. Just a touch of burn in the back of the throat keeps this one from being perfect.

O- Just not a lot of flaws here. Classic Smokestack Series. Amazing really just how top of the line Boulevard gets with this bunch. No different here.

I was more than a little excited to see a shelf full of this at my local grocery alcove.

This beer is beautiful. The bottle is the usual "limited release" design from Boulevard, and the pour reveals a deep and promising amber.

The smell REALLY reminds me of Boulevard's own "Rye on Rye." A bit of slick coconut and some strong grainy scents dominate the initial nose. A second whiff reveals cherries and a hint of spice. Perfectly tantalizing!

Tastes like it smells, and (again) reminds me ever so fondly of Rye on Rye. It has a different sort of taste for a quad, and definitely plays more to the bourbon/fruit beer crowd. Oddly enough, Boulevard's "Sixth Glass" might be a better quad... but certainly not a better brew. At room temp, this beer opens up with some delicious dryness and an even bigger dose of cherry pulp. Delicious

Dry, spicy, tangy. The dryness is definitely the defining attribute of the mouthfeel, in my opinion. Outstanding.

This is up there with the very best that Boulevard has to offer. Lightweights and non-commited beer drinkers might consider sharing this (duh) but I had no trouble sipping it down by myself over a few hours. A highly recommended beer, and a truly unique one!

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a clean tulip glass.

A: Dark golden brown when held to the light, huge head of more than three fingers.

S: Cherries, fruit, vanilla

T: Cherries, slight fruit and bananas, good oaky almost smoke flavor from the wood.

M: Medium body very smooth

O: This is a fantastic beer. I bought two to age one of them and I am very glad I did.

Served in a Free State Tulip.

A - Ok, so it comes out light and cloudy. Kind of weird. Prepared to drink cidery funk.

S - Cherries and bourbon aging. Traces of funk perhaps.

T - Light and spritzy and sweet on the tongue which changes to more sourness (light) on the back of the tongue and a heaty aftertaste where the actual booze comes out. Something tells me this beer would do well with age. Perhaps the booze might drop out and other flavors might show up on the scanner.

M - Like I said - light and spritzy and sweet on the front of the tongue which changes to more funk and slight sourness on back of tongue where the booze comes out. Still a light beer on the mouth considering what I thought it would be.

O - Look forward to checking this bottle out in a few years after it's aged a bit. Can't wait for the booze to drop out and for it to get deeper. Wish it had more deep dark quaddy notes to it. Overall a great beer, true to this new style. Would def have again.
