12 ounce bottle w/a a best buy freshness date of "10/16/09."
A: Amber yellow body, with a pretty good amount of head and little lacing. About what would be expected for a good IPA.
S: Berries and grapefruit along with a hint of alcohol and sweetness hit the nose.
T&M: Starts off with slight sweetness from the malt, followed by lemon, grapefruit, and an underlying berry flavor that is a bit astringent. Oddly enough, the berry flavors first seem to accompany the bitterness, but then become somewhat cloying sweet, especially as this brew warms a bit. Hint of alcohol along with some citrus esters, finishes a bit dry with some lingering bitterness that seems a bit brash. Mouthfeel is good, but for an IPA, I personally prefer more body.
D&Notes: This brew has actually gotten better as it has it has aged a bit. This an interesting effort, but to me, it's an average "IPA" at best, and at only 5.7% ABV, it really is just more of a pale ale with a lot of different hops. Not a bad beer, but some weird flavors seem to get in the way, and with so many IPAs in the craft beer universe, I think I'll pass on this one.
