Notes/Commercial Description:
They say there are two sides to every story, and that’s certainly true of Two Jokers Double-Wit. On the one hand, it’s a revival of the classic Belgian “wit,” or “white” ale, with lactic fermentation providing a refreshing tartness. On the other hand, it’s a modern, uniquely American brew; big, flavorful, and spiced with cardamom, coriander, orange peel, lavender, and grains of paradise.

Wowie wow wow! The Continental would approve. Colored like freshly squeezed tangerine juice, and it has a thin off-white small bubbly head. It smells like canned peaches and rosemary. Tastes like malty wine with a dry finish. It has lotsa stone fruit flavors and the rosemary nose is on the tongue. Some classic Wit attributes of course, but something all its own. Fantastic and I'm getting another.

Reviewing Boulevard's re-released version of this beer in 2014, which as far as I know, did not involve any kind of recipe change. Enjoyed on tap at Bier Station. Poured into a large Belgian tulip glass with a flared rim.

Appearance - Pours a murky amber yellow with just a bit of variance on hue around the edges of the glass where the liquid isn't as dense and allows light to pass through. Otherwise, fairly consistent color throughout. Atop the body sits a single finger of frothy bone white head that takes only a minute or two to recede to a healthy bubbly ringlet around the edge of the glass with some additional thickness at places along the circumference. A mix of larger and smaller bubbles. As I start to drink, it leaves just tracings of lace along the glass that disappear after awhile.

Smell - From the glass emanates a wonderful bouquet of floral and fruity aromas paired with that distinctive spiciness that comes from a Belgian wit. However, in this case, it's different. The spiciness seems to have more depth than a standard witbier. The lavender and cardamom give this one a distinctly floral quality that is usually absent. The coriander is still there, but as a complement, rather than a feature. There is also a nice citrus zest component that brings to mind orange and some lemon.

Taste - The aroma turns out to be a wonderful prelude to the refreshing yet complex taste of this beer. Sometimes, those two things can be a bit mutually exclusive--a lot of different flavors can kill the refreshing aspects of a beer. It's a bit different than I remember, but the last time I had this beer was at least 5 years ago. At play, there is nice soft citrus from the orange peel and coriander and just the faintest twinge of tartness, which is actually a characteristic I really like about some of the most authentic witbiers. The floral elements are at play again, more with the lavender and just a faint bit of the impression of sweetness from the cardamom, both imparting an impression of sweetness, like you get from smelling baking spices.

Mouthfeel - Medium-to-light bodied, with a low to moderate level of carbonation and just the tiniest twinge of sourness on the tongue.

Overall, this beer may be better than I remember it, but my palate has come a long way since I first had it many years ago. This was one of the earliest examples of Boulevard's new Smokestack Series offerings I ever had, and having it was a gateway into Boulevard coming into its own when it comes to Belgian styles. The reprise of this fan favorite is a welcome addition to (hopefully) their regular lineup.

Kept a bottle of this stashed in the fridge for a stupidly long time. I dunno. I do that, sometimes, without meaning to. And sometimes the accidental aging does wonders for the beer...

Pours thick and gold with a firm, foamy white head. Smells of intense banana and lots and lots of spice. The pepper and alcohol nodes have been muted by age, and replaced with gigantic bursts of chamomile, coriander, lavender, and lemongrass. The sweet spices carry throughout the beer, and are balanced nicely by a very light wheatmalt and pepper nodes on the far back end.

It reminds me of a hyper-evolved version of Cisco's wonderful Grey Lady--a super spicy, lightly sweet wit that tastes like a combination of wonderful potpourri and a handful of strange, Victorian-era candies.

Odor: Pepper and citrus

Appearance: Smoke poured out when the cork was popped. Served in a challis glass, The beer poured out a milky light orange Fast dissipating lace on glass

Taste: Strong taste of lemon and orange peel with a heavy coriander spice. High carbonation just short of a champagne like feel. Slightly creamy but more acidic than Blue Moon.

Good Beer. I was taken back by how citrusy the beer tasted but as I drank became very accustomed to the taste. Very light. Would be a great summer beer.
