"The way I understand it, the Russians are sort of a combination of evil and incompetence... sort of like the Post Office with tanks."
Lightly hazy sun-splashed goldenrod with a billowing crown of alabaster colored whipped cream that has all sorts of interesting surface topography. The foam is pretty sticky as well, as evidenced by an attractively decorated glass.
What could be better than a saison that uses boatloads of Amarillo and Simcoe hops? Never mind, that was a rhetorical question. The tropical fruit juiciness of Simcoe is especially noted.
Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale is yet another outstanding Smokestack Series beer from the good folks at Boulevard Brewing. My taste memory of Saison (R.I.P.) is murky at this point, but T7 seems to be a more than worthy replacement. It's also higher in alcohol, which could a positive or a negative, depending on your preference.
Flaked corn adds a bit of sweetness to the barley and wheat, without making the beer taste corny. Unfortunately, the hops have faded somewhat since this bottle is nearing the 'best by' date. That's my fault for waiting, not the brewery's fault.
There's still a good bit of hop flavor left. Pineapple-pink grapefruit-orange from Amarillo and Simcoe... bitter herbs and grasses from Tradition (Hallertau variant). Gentle white pepper notes put the finishing touches on this Americanized version of a farmhouse ale.
Slightly too much unmasked alcohol keeps the taste score from the next highest number, although a fresher and more hoppy beer would have covered that up to some extent. The mouthfeel, while far from Belgianesque, is more than capable. The carbonation contributes just the right amount of lift and energy.
The lesson to be learned here is that Boulevard Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale is good beer even when approaching its 'best by' date. My suspicion is that the taste and drinkability scores would both have earned 4.5s if I had popped the cork last summer or fall.

This beer should be served at a slightly higher temprature than you would the normal lager beers. This allows the fruity flavors to come forward. There is also a slight hop aroma to this beer, and served cool, it is easier to notice. The main aroma are complex, some fruits and bananas, but also a spicy note. The taste is dry, you get some of the fruitiness. The body is very light. Easy to dring despite being 8.5 % ABV.
