Notes/Commercial Description:
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

Pours a dark, golden color with a huge foamy head. Head quickly dissipates but leaves a light blanket of foam behind.

Scent is very fruity and slightly hoppy. Notes of grapefruit, lemon zest and spices, particularly pepper and coriander. Smells a lot like some witbiers I have tried.

Taste was wonderful. Full of sweet fruit flavors - peaches, orange, raisins, even a little bit of banana in the finish. Spice was present but not overwhelming. Again, pepper, coriander, but also cinnamon and vanilla. No alcohol taste at all, despite the 8% ABV.

Mouthfeel was pleasant. Goes down smoothly. Lightly carbonated.

Overall, a really solid beer. This was my first saison/farmhouse ale, and i found it to be quite enjoyable. I typically go for hoppy beers, but this was a nice change of pace. Will definitely try again...right now.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Shaker pint glass.

APPEARANCE: golden straw color with two finger head, highly carbonated, excellent retention and some lacing on the glass. Very nice looking beer.

SMELL: funky, pepper, pears, bread.

TASTE: the taste follows the nose, funky, pepper, pears, bread and tastes better as it warms. The hops are not overly assertive, nicely balanced, the alcohol 8.5% is perceptible.

PALATE: higher carbonation, creamy, medium body for the style.

OVERALL: this is a good Saison but not the best I've had, solid but not spectacular. Boulevard is an excellent brewery and I'll be trying more soon.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. I gave it a gentle pour and it still had a big (1 inch+) head.

The color is great - gold with a bit of solid red undertone. The head is only very slightly off-white, very full and creamy. Carbonation seems a bit high to me. The head could easily have run over the top of the pint even with a careful pour. I pulled it back a bit half-way through.

The smell is also really nice. The yeast is upfront which is really nice in a Farmhouse ale. It smells a bit like bread dough with some hay (dude, it's farmhouse ale after all) and fruity hops. This is a fantastic smelling beer to me.

The taste is a little more subtle but also quite nice. The hops are a bit subtile but I live the the PNW and am used to a lot of big, almost overwhelming IPAs. The subtlety works pretty well in this case. The malt is biscuity and warm. There is a tiny bit of sour skunky-ness in the finish that I don't love but it's the exception. Initial flavor and mid-way through, everything is copacetic.

This is really strangely easy to drink considering the alcohol level. The alcohol is not particularly present. If I had a 6-er of this I could really knock myself out. It has a full flavor but the lightness and subtlety of a much lighter beer. This is my version of a sessions!

Overall, not the best farmhouse that I've had but it's very good. I'm a sucker for this style these days and this implementation of it is solid.
