Notes/Commercial Description:
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

Blind 12oz bottle (thanks to Onion), split three ways and poured into New Belgium globe glass.

A: Very clear, bright yellow pour. Small off-white head which fades quickly.

S: Lager, maybe? Yeast, some sweetness, very minimal hop notes.

T: Crisp and sweet with a strong floral aftertaste. Maybe a BIPA? Very strong bitterness lingers.

M: Very bright, strong carbonation. Crisp and refreshing.

D: Highly refreshing + mediocre flavor = moderate drinkability.

I had this about six months ago in a 750 and remembered liking it quite a bit. I'm wondering whether a bit of age helped the first bottle I had, but maybe this is just a factor of reviewing blind. Very interesting, to say the least.

Poured into a small tulip glass an orange tinged dull light golden with a large fluffy, sticky white head that left two full rings of lace behind as it settled verly slowly into a frothy mass.Big lemony citrus notes in the nose along with bready malt and light phenolic spice.Crisp and quite dry on the palate with citric undertones to go along with light phenols.A very good American version of the style, alot of the time I stay away from the style because of the dreaded funk, this is funk subdued.Nice job here.

a: This beer pours a pale gold with excellent clarity. The long lasting white head settles to about a half a finger of compact bubbles leaving lacing on the glass.

s: Get your nose to the glass as soon as you pour, the aroma goes from almost a rock solid American IPA then transition in some of those saison fruit and spice aromas. That pretty well some up what I get here with citrus and piney American hops aromas with spicy, peppery and orange Belgian yeast aromas. The dominating hops and yeast aromas are well balance. There is also a soft alcohol aroma.

t: The moderately-high hops bitterness and spice dominate the flavor with moderate fruit flavors of orange and American hops. The hops are citrusy and piney while the spice is mostly pepper. There is a touch of that bubblegum brett flavor.

m: This is light and fluffy on the palate with a moderately-light body and high carbonation.

o: An awesome American interpretation of the Saison style. A World class beer!

On-tap at Flying Saucer.

A-Golden-hay color with a rather rich aroma.

S- A bit funky, white pepper, cucumber, and lemon grass.

T- Taste is earthy with an added fruitiness similar to rinds and a dry finish.

D- Very enjoyable. Expect no less from the Smokestack Series.

APPEARANCE- Lightly-hazed deep straw with big rocky white head and sticky lace. Perfect.

AROMA- light and delicate,- citrus, lemon, white pepper, low grainy aroma, aromatic and perfumey. Not a whiff of alcohol despite the ABV.

FLAVOR- Just a tiny pop of pils malt sweetness gets scrubbed off the palate by carbonation and spicy yeast with a light mango and banana esters. Some citrusy hop mid palate and a dry, peppery finish. Totally lovely. Moderate bitterness aids the peppery finish. Alcohol pushes a floral presance into the sinuses.

MOUTHFEEL- appropriately light bodied and singing with carbonation, yet still has a rich, velvety mouthfeel, lightly astringent in the finish. Alcohol is apparent.

OVERALL- I drink this all the time despite the high ABV. Responsible for many nights that went too far. Definatly the best stateside saison I've ever had. Pretty-much textbook except for the beastly ABV.

Pour/Appearance: Thick, 3 finger, head that maintained itself through a good beginning of the pour, nice lacing as it came down, golden color.

Smell: Great floral notes and a bit of citrus at the beginning, strong grass through the remainder.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation, but not overdone. You almost instantly pick-up on the floral/herb notes as well as the semi-sweet grass. There's a slightly dry finish.

Overall: Great beer, ordered a second where I'd normally rotate to try something new. The taste and smell bouquet described is _almost_ overpowering, but Boulevard got it right in balancing things out to make it an enjoyable saison ale.

Into a tulip. Best by 12/17/11; consumed 8/28/11

A - Pours a hazy straw folks with two fingers of white head. Head has nice persistance and leaves great lacing.

S - Nice aromas of Belgian yeast and citrus, both lemon and orange. A bit of spice and a faint bubblegum aroma as well.

T - Nice bright taste with a bit of a hop bite on top of some nice Belgian yeast funk, a bit of pepper, nice citrus and very faint sweetness.

M - Medium mouthfeel with a dry, crisp spicy finish.

O - Really enjoyed this one. Nice flavor combination. Crisp and bright but with a nice depth as well.

12 oz bottle, best by 5/16/12. Pours golden with a bunch of floaties and a big rocky white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet wheaty malts and some fruit and honey with a little funky yeast and some soapy floral notes.

The flavor is sweet wheaty malts and earthy yeast with a dry bitterness (big for a saison) in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with spritzy carbonation.

Overall, an OK saison. It doesn't seem well balanced to me.
