BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Boulevard Brewing Co.
Missouri, United States | website

Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

I picked up a bottle of Boulevard's Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale last week for $2.89 at The Lager Mill. I've been wanting to try this one for a while and not that it's in Michigan I have my chance to see if it lives up to it's reputation, so lets see how it goes. 2016 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a teku.

A- The label looks nice, it has a clean and classic look to it and it's just a little eye catching. It poured a hazy orange color that takes on more of a golden color when held to the light with over three fingers worth of fluffy and chunky off white head that died down to a thick ring that stayed till the end and it left lots of patchy lacing behind. This is fantastic looking beer, this is just how a good saison or farmhouse ale should look.

S- The aroma start off with a higher amount of medium yeast with a big fruity aroma being the first to show up and they impart a big stonefruit, citrus rind and pineapple like aromas and that leads into the yeast which impart a a little bit of bubble gum aroma with a typical saison yeast like aroma along with a little bit more juicy and bright fruit aromas and a slight bit of pale malts and a grassy aromas showing up towards the end. This beer has a good aroma, I like the fruitiness, but I wish it had a little funk to it.

T- The taste seems to be Similar to the aroma, but lighter and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with that same fruity aspects that I got int the aroma being the first to show up and this time taste takes on a little more of that stone fruit like aspect and it's followed by the yeast which is a little lighter and imparts a typical saison yeast flavor with no bubblegum this time. Up next comes some hops which impart a slight citrus rind and grassy flavors with a slight bit of herbal hops which impart a higher amount of low bitterness with a saison yast and stone fruit aftertaste and just a little bit of those malty flavors show up. This is a good tasting beer, no flavors are to overpowering, but I still wish it had some funk to it.

M- Smooth, slightly refreshing, a little crisp, medium bodied with a slightly higher amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is good and works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and goos example of a Saison, it had just about everything that i look for in the style and the balanced seem to be right in line with the drinkability. This beer had good drinkability, I could have a couple of these, especially on a warm day. What I like the most about this beer is the balance, no single flavor is too overpowering. What I like the least about this beer is that it's labeled as a Saison, maybe it's because I'm so use to Jolly Pumpkins Farmhouse Ales that I always expect a little funk in there, to me that's what sets apaprt a regular saison from a Farmhouse ale and I wish it was labeled as a Saison. I would buy this beer again when looking for a good saison and I would recommend it to anyone who likes the style. Good job guys, this is a tasty Saison.

Pours a hazy opaque gold thick three finger white foamy head dissipates to a half finger white head that sticks around.

Smell is full of aromas of belgian yeasts, coriander, pepper, lemon zest. Typical of the style and very inviting.

Taste is initially yeasty quickly giving way to a very bitter finish. Lots of hops here, kind of off-putting, particularly for the style. Some notes of lemon rind and pepper come through. Overall not really a great flavor profile for a farmhouse ale.

Feel has lots of carbonation, leaves a bit of a tingle. Otherwise its pretty light in the mouth. Not super drinkable given the carbonation - more of a sipper.

Overall, this one is just ok. There are too many great farmhouse ales readily available to ever try this one again.

2016 pours a cloudy golden yellow color with a huge white frothy head. There is quite a bit of a thick soapy lacing. The odor for me is spicy, clove, bread like, slight citrus, tropical fruits, slightly floral, hay. The taste for me is citrus lemon, spice, cloves, herbal, hay, slightly tropical fruit. There is barely any bitterness.

Bottle poured into glass stein.
A-Wonderful golden cloudiness I love to see in this beer.
Huge puffy head lasts forever. Trace of lacing.

S-Citrus peel, yeast, coriander & spice.
T-Lemon peel, earthy herbals, peppery spice, just hints of banana.
M-Some tiny bits of sediment present with medium body & creaminess,
above average carbonation.

O-A very yummy beer, easy drinking & at 8.5% it could slip up on you.

12 oz bottle with a BB date of May 2016 served in a snifter.

Cloudy light apricot-colored body topped by a durable head that leaves sheets of lacing.

Aroma: Fruity and grassy elements stick out in a complex mix.

Flavor: grapefruit hop notes, but mild bitterness with more tartness and some sweetness. Peppery, yeasty and hoppy finish.

O: excellent for style.

Feel: Medium+, soft carbonation in near medium body; semi-dry finish.

I've yet to find a Belgian I really like, just not my style. However, this one is one of the best that I've tried. I put it in the same class as tripel Karmeliet(sp) and Duvel. Nicely balanced but I'm just not a big fan of the yeast I believe

L: A sizeable, pillowy, and creamy white head sits atop a hazy-gold body. Excellent head retention with abundant lacing. Effervescent. Simply a pleasure to look at.

S: Banana, earthiness, bubblegum, spiciness, pear, apple, bread, pepper, orange

T: Apple, pear, pineapple, orange, lemongrass, pepper, earthiness, herbal, and some wheat character

F: Creamy, prickly- plenty of carbonation, but not too much. Light on the palate, unbelievably easy to drink.

O: Fantastic. Superb drinkability, complexity, and an all around great brew. Recommended.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 10/31/2016. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy golden yellow color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big lemon zest, grapefruit, pear, pineapple, peach, orange peel, pepper, clove, wheat, cracker, bread, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome complexity and balance of bright citrus/tropical hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big lemon zest, grapefruit, pear, pineapple, peach, orange peel, pepper, clove, wheat, cracker, bread, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Moderate yeast spiciness and floral/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon/orange zest, grapefruit, pear, pineapple, peach, pepper, clove, wheat, cracker, bread, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/tropical hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from carbonation and bitter/spiciness as well. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, fairly creamy/bready, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an incredible saison! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/tropical hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

pours a very cloudy golden peach with a massive soapy head that hangs around. nose; heavy clean grain (pilsner), floral tangerine, grass, & herbal musk (i really can't pick out anything particular). taste; belgian yeast, lemongrass, tangerine, light citrus pith, banana, hops, & light green apple. gum & white peppercorn spice on the finish. strong carbonation & medium mouthfeel. a bit of a funk builder, but the fruit juice keeps cutting the middle nicely. at 8.5%, it's pretty well-balanced and tamed for a bigger-than-usual farmhouse ale. available almost everywhere i've been in georgia, and a fairly decent standout.

I purchased a four pack of bottles of this from France 44 in Minneapolis, MN. Tank 7 pours a cloudy orange hue with a thick head that leaves a great lacing. The aroma is very earthy and floral with hops and spices creating a great scent. The flavor has a floral bouquet at first and then finishes with a slight hoppy and spicy bitterness. This would be a great beer for a Summer evening.

This brew pours a cloudy orange with a fluffy two finger head and lots of lacing. The head sticks around for a long time.
The smell is sweet, (bubble gum), fruity and floral. Lost of straw and earthy smell. Floral hops, mild grapefruit and lemon.
The taste follows the nose with lots of peach, lemon, light grapefruit and floral hops. Light sweet malts and floral hops in the finish. A little peppery too. A nice complex brew that is perfect for summer.

Not a lover of this style really: ie the "imperial saison" or whatever you want to call a saison/farmhouse that clocks in at over 8% abv. That said, No technical faults -- this is a solid beer with plenty of interesting fermentation-driven stuff going on. Still, pretty sure I won't be picking it up again.

Poured a semi-transparent golden body with a thin cap of white head. Overall impression of appearance is of a typical saison, though with less head than typical for the style. Scents of white pepper, lemon zest at medium-high levels, a light fruitiness mingling with moderate floral and spicy hops and a subdued grainy malt. Overall impression of aroma is of a classic saison, very true to style. Flavor begins with strong phenols of white pepper, mingling with a citrus character of grapefruit and lemon zest with moderate bitterness and a soft grainy malt. Middle gains in dryness, still quite phenolic with citrus. Finish is dry with notes of white pepper and spicy hops mingling with citrus fruit and soft malt. Aftertaste is white pepper and grainy malt. Overall impression of flavor is of an excellent saison, very true to style and qutie enjoyable. Mouthfeel is medium-light bodied and has effervescent carbonation with a drying finish. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a nice saison. Overall this is a nice saison. It has a wonderful character that sticks true to the style. No big surprises but quite pleasant to drink. Worth trying as it is a solid example of the style.

From a 750 ml bottle, this is a wonderful brew. Pale gold in color with a thick, pillow-like, white head. The smell is amazing...lots of fruit (citrus peel and banana). The taste is balanced, with a wonderful sweetness up front, an underlying Belgian bitterness, and a finish that is spicy and long-lasting. Wonderful. Soft and full in body. This is a great beer.

Poured into Tulip glass. Nice head, but went down to 1/2 f get after 10 minutes. Citrus-y on the nose. Fairly well carbonated. Reminds me of Duvel. Nothing particularly stands out m, quick, dry finish. Very nice.

I'd have to blind taste this vs Saison Dupont or Duvel to know which I prefer, as it's close race. Try 24.

A: Into a Duvel tulip pours a massive, rocky, lacey. dense white head on a murky deep golden body.

S: Into my nose pours a vast, pleasing, fruity core aroma, so good, I pour another beer to make this one last longer! It lingers with excellent yeasty, grassy, spring, and earthy notes.

T: Follows the abundant smell (which is the best part), and then yeast, herbal, coriander up front which converts to golden treacle candy /malt and then to a clove, pepper and citric finish.

M:Feels lighter side of medium body with peppery, prickly high carbonation. Long pleasing dry finish.

Overall: As good as any. Try 24. Happy beer discovery!

APPEARANCE: A hazy light amber/orange. Two+ fingers of off white, foamy head with good retention and nice lacing down the glass. Plenty of small bubbles rising up.
AROMA: Sweet and sour sauce, orange, lemon, and a bit of white pepper. Bready and yeasty.
TASTE: Bright citrus and then mild bitterness that turns into a pleasant sour note that lingers. Bready and a nice dose of pepper.
FEEL: Plenty of carbonation, medium body and a little slick right off the bat, but it dries up nicely on the back end.
OVERALL: Love that nice sharp, bright, bite right at the beginning. The beer has nice carbonation, nice balance among sweet, sour, and bitter. Good stuff.

12 oz. bottle poured into a modified pils glass. Light orange, hazy in the glass. Three finger head with lacing that still clings after 10 minutes. Very good foam.
Smells of lemon, clove, funky, and some sweat or horse or ? New to farmhouse/saisons but truly love them.
Taste the lemon or citrus slightly. Some clove and spice and fruit? Love that funk taste also, whatever it is. Palate not to keen.
Very creamy in the mouth. Abv not noticeable. Could be bad in the morning if not mindful.
Another beer that I love. Will always buy this brew. Too many that I need to keep on hand. Would recommend to anyone!
Great brew!!

Poured into pint glass, with golden clear color, and medium head. The aroma is very pleasantly lemony. Taste is very pleasant, with fruity afternotes. This is a strong ale, and the alcohol does come through in the finish. This is my favorite of the Boulevard's offerings.

On tap in a tulip glass. Hazy yellow-orange with an inch of white head. Citrus, pepper, and floral hops on the nose. Definitely some Belgian-style saison funkiness, but it's subdued. Taste is well-balanced. Hardly a trace of the 8.5% ABV. A bigger hop note than expected. Might actually guess this was an IPA if set in front of me without an introduction, but the saison notes are still certainly there. Lemon grass, pepper, pear, grapefruit. Mouthfeel is medium. I would get this again but wouldn't go out of my way for it. A solid hoppy saison.

A nice creamy head after the pour. Nose of grapefruit, wheat, and spice come right at you. Color is orange and hazy. Taste is hops, lemon, yeast. I get the peppery finish the label says after a few sips. This is currently my favorite non-IPA beer and definitely favorite saison.

Funky tart bitter yeast and hop bite at first, but then mellow into a nice sweet spicy fruity Belgian. A nice light creamy body that's light and refreshing. Love it! One of my favorites.
