Notes/Commercial Description:
Most breweries have at least one piece of equipment that’s just a bit persnickity. Here at Boulevard we have fermenter number seven, the black sheep of our cellar family. Ironically, when our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in that very vessel. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

Pour/Appearance: Thick, 3 finger, head that maintained itself through a good beginning of the pour, nice lacing as it came down, golden color.

Smell: Great floral notes and a bit of citrus at the beginning, strong grass through the remainder.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation, but not overdone. You almost instantly pick-up on the floral/herb notes as well as the semi-sweet grass. There's a slightly dry finish.

Overall: Great beer, ordered a second where I'd normally rotate to try something new. The taste and smell bouquet described is _almost_ overpowering, but Boulevard got it right in balancing things out to make it an enjoyable saison ale.

Semi-transparent, lemon-yellow ale with floating yeast flakes. Billowing, cloud-like head with great retention and lines of lace.

Brilliant, fresh, floral and pine aroma. Hints of Belgian yeast and heavy on the hop aroma.

Solid rye bread malt character. Bright, spicy hop flavor of ginger and pine. Subtle honey sweetness. Lingering yeast character. Great balance. Finishes with tart lemon flavor.

Medium bodied and well carbonated. Dry feel overall.

Great Belgian inspired brew. Tastes like a Belgian pale ale due to the assertive hop character.

A - the beer pours with a big, three finger head of white foam on a hazy, light golden body. The foam settles slowly and leaves nice lace on the glass.

S - Bready malt, wheat, and herbal hops with subtle yeast notes of vanilla, pear, and pepper.

T - Thick, bready malt up front with some sweetness and spicy wheat. Complex yeast notes come out in the middle with notes of pepper, anise, and pear. Things finish up with more peppery yeast, strongly herbal hops, and dry, toasty malt.

M - A medium-thick body, moderately high carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - very nice, the malt and hops work well together to give the beer sweetness up front but a suitably dry finish that makes it compellingly drinkable. The yeast adds complexity but not in as flashy a maner as some examples of the style. Very drinkable and well made.

Poured into a tulip. Batch #712114 with a Best By of 01-2013.

3.5 A: First pour gave me a lot of head, so I needed an additional one to get a full glass. Mildly hazed golden yellow color. Two fingers of frothy/foamy white head. Retention is about average and a good bit of lacing is left.

4.0 S: Good bit of funk and fruit in this. Grapefruit and orange kick things off. Melon and hints of various stone fruit. Flowery/herbal funk with notes of forest after a rain and apple orchard. Elderflowers and chamomile. Dry hay and wet grass.

4.0 T: Just as herbal and flowery as the nose. Too much herbalness that I don't even know which ones to name. In truth I only know a few by heart anyway. Let's just say that it's herbal. Melon, peach, grapefruit, orange, and hints of pineapple fruitiness. Same funk as in nose. Lightly spicy with pepper being the most apparent flavor. This is bold and powerful to say the least. Quite complex as well.

4.0 M: Lighter medium body. Carbonation is near the upper limit of what I'm okay with. Good spritziness and good creaminess as well.

4.0 D: I'm not a huge fan of superly herbal saisons, but this is one of the best in that genre. Complex, powerful, and easy to put down.

Picked up a bottle of Tank 7 from Boulevard as part of a mixed 6-pack the other day after seeing it mentioned on barnivore.com. I'm still new to the art and science of tasting beers, and I'd never had a Saison-style brew so I figured I'd give it a shot. Glassware was a nice, sparklin' clean Pilsner glass, since it was all I had available at the moment.

Appearance: Popped the top and poured a nice hazy straw with two fingers worth of sturdy, pure white head. Was interested to see that for a few minutes after pouring, the last 1/2" or so at the bottom of the glass was free of the haziness in the rest of the beer, but as I worked my way through it, it became hazy throughout. Might have been all the swirling in between sips to see what else I could pick up on the nose. Noticed what looked to be a bit of particulate (yeast?) suspended in the brew as well.

Smell: Big grapefruit aroma, with a little bit of a pineapple-y sweetness following up, then spiciness and floral notes from the hops on the back end. I really like how this stuff smells - I think I spent as much time with my nose in the glass as I did actually drinking it.

Taste: Grapefruit, noticeable but not over-the-top sweetness then some decent hoppy bitterness and spice. Once or twice I got a bit of a rubbing alcohol aroma on the exhale after swallowing a sip. Light, effervescent carbonation.

Mouthfeel: Decent. A tad on the thin side, with a sort of foamy sensation,I suppose from the carbonation. Super, super dry. Leaves a slight sour taste in the back of the mouth for a few seconds after swallowing.

Overall: Definetly an interesting and seemingly pretty accurate introduction to the style - I'm not sure I'd buy a sixer of it right away, but then again I'm usually a fan of darker beers, so I certainly won't write it off. A very drinkable brew!

Big bomber into a snifter.

Appearance: Golden hue complimented with a nice 1/8 inch head retained throughout drinking.

Smell: Yeasty grapefruit with some banana. Slight spice on the tail end.

Taste: Grapefruit throughout with a spicy lingering finish. Slight clove. Pretty straight forward taste.

Mouthfeel: Despite the spice, not as dry as you would expect. Light to medium bodied with solid carbonation.

Overall: Great take on the farmhouse style. Not exactly blown away, but this beer is still solid.

Beer poured from bottle into a Nonic shaped pint glass

A - Beer pours with a healthy, thick, and frothy white colored head; holds very well and leaves behind a moderate amount of lacing; hazy light orange colored body; good levels of carbonation

S - Sour yeast; citrus scented nose; hay and grass; wheat; light malt smell; floral; grapefruit; spices

T - Slight touch of sour taste; grapefruit; floral; vinegar; breaded malt flavor; orange; very spicy taste at the tip of the tongue

M - Very effervescent; sour aftertaste; full of body; smooth feel on the tongue

D - Very easy to drink; nice summertime drink; great wheat and floral farmhouse taste; I really like this and would consider making it a staple drink for my fridge

12 oz. bottle. Best by 03/05/13.

Hazy golden orange body. Thick, rocky, voluptuous, beige-white head. Great retention and lacing. Nose of powdered sugar, tropical fruit, fresh grass, spices, and herbal hops. Nice.

Herbal, grassy bitterness up front. Tropical fruit and sugary malt settle in. Papaya, pear, and fruit cocktail. Peppery, herbal bitterness increases into the finish. Banana and yeasty notes. Dry finish. Lingering fruit and peppery bitterness. Medium-full body. Thick, smooth, creamy feel. Very well done and delicious.
