Notes/Commercial Description:
John Barleycorn is memorialized in English folk tradition as the personification of the barley plant, sacrificed at harvest time and then reborn as beer or ale. Our Harvest Dance Wheat Wine is a celebration of John’s Midwestern cousin, wheat. Beginning with a large portion of wheat malt, we add an equally generous helping of Hallertau and Citra hops and age the ale on both French and American oak. The result is a big, warming burst of tropical fruit flavors, highlighted by subtle wine-like notes, and rounding slowly to a long, dry, oaky finish.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass; batch 2012-1, best before 6/2013. Pours cloudy golden amber color with a nice 2-3 finger fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge lemon zest, orange zest, pineapple, tangerine, peach, pear, honey, wheat, bread, light pine, floral, grass, and herbal. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity hop notes with a moderate malt balance. Taste of big lemon zest, orange zest, peach, tangerine, pineapple, pear, floral, wheat, bread, pine, grass, and herbal earthiness. Fair amount of floral citrus bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, light fruits, floral, pine, wheat, bread, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic balance and complexity of citrus and tropical hop complexity; with a solid malt balance still showcasing hop flavors; and zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a slick, creamy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic wheatwine style. Fantastic balance and complexity of citrus and tropical hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.

A near gusher from the corked bottle. Finally settles down to a hazy amber in the Gulpener tulip with endlessly streaming bubbles. Distracting fizzy mouthfeel. Quite sticky with sugar. A whiff of Band Aids.

At first couple of sips I thought there was something bacterial going on, but it seems to be the massive carbonation and the wheaty esters. Fruity and grapey. It makes me think of alcoholic Thompson Seedless grapes with some Belgian yeast invited to the party. Sharp and aromatic with a hoppy burn, finally, in the back of the throat.

I would hope for a more refined sipping brew for a Wheat Wine, but this is certainly an experience. From the 750 ml bottle purchased at Special Brews in Lynnwood, Washington.

Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter. Back label says Best By 6-2013. Didn't even think to check the date when I bought it.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a full inch of off-white head that retains very well before slowly dropping to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of surface foam.

S- Yeasty, spicy aroma with lots of fruity phenols. Little hints of butterscotch and other candy-like smells.

T- Tangy and sweet wheat with a noticeable alcohol taste. Still, pretty smooth and drinkable but the promising aroma has lead to a not-so-exciting flavor. More candy notes like in the smell but the booze takes away from their character.

M- Medium-high carbonation makes for a spritzy quality which I always like but the alcohol bite slightly stings the back of the throat. The body leans toward the lighter side.

O- I think I'm starting to dislike wheat wines more than I have in the past. It seems like it's a style you really have to nail to be enjoyable yet I haven't had enough examples frequently enough to know what needs to be achieved. Guess I'll just have to keep trying different ones out.
