Notes/Commercial Description:
John Barleycorn is memorialized in English folk tradition as the personification of the barley plant, sacrificed at harvest time and then reborn as beer or ale. Our Harvest Dance Wheat Wine is a celebration of John’s Midwestern cousin, wheat. Beginning with a large portion of wheat malt, we add an equally generous helping of Hallertau and Citra hops and age the ale on both French and American oak. The result is a big, warming burst of tropical fruit flavors, highlighted by subtle wine-like notes, and rounding slowly to a long, dry, oaky finish.

Pours a hazy orangish yellow color with a nice 1 finger head that retreats to form a thin white layer on the top. Smells sweet with lots of wheat, some lemon, and some bubblegum. The taste follows the nose really well. Starts off with some honey flavors that are mixed in with some wheat malts. Mixed in is a lot of bubblegum with some more of the honey and a touch of molasses. I am not too familiar with this style, however this is a delicious beer. It is an amped up wheat beer that was a nice change of pace for me.

From a re-sealed bottle (from a certain beer writer's secret stash) hidden behind the counter at Beer Monger's in Portland, OR.

Massive fluffy white head, despite having been open a while. Whitish to faint brown, hazy body. Nice lace.

Wheat-forward, sweet with banana, then hops and some peppery saison spice on the finish, outstanding.

Feels way too foamy, which cuts the taste.

Outstanding wheatwine, light bodied and kind of an imperial saison, quite interesting.

I poured into a thistle glass.

Appearance- Cloudy golden-orange with a very thick foamy head. Large amount of lacing.

Smell- Very similar to a Saison. Yeast, wheat, lemon, and a hint of clove.

Taste- Starts off slightly sweet with citrus notes and finishes a little spicy and tart.

Mouthfeel- Smooth, crisp, and highly carbonated.

Overall- This is my first wheatwine and it is fairly enjoyable. It reminds me of a Saison with a toned down peppery taste.

look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: (4.5)
- Huge overflowing super light tan head slowly settling to a mound of centered foam over a cloudy IPA-like straw and zesty orange hue. Leaving lace all about the glass. Pretty beer.

Smell: (4.5)
- Zesty Belgian yeast aroma.. lemon zesty, citrus zing, light and subtle wheat malt notes and a bit of ginger and clove to boot. Earthy oak, and esters with a light alcohol aroma. This puppy smells great.

Taste: (3.5)
- Oaky wine-like esters, fruit, raisin, clove, and zingy lemon zest. Fruity tropical hops zest, and a great earthy bitterness peppered with sugars and spice. Overall quite interesting, but doesn't hold up to the aroma.

Mouth Feel: (3.5)
- Quite the bubbly brew. Many bubbles expand the brew in the mouth. Medium body, chewy, and bitter dry. Enough sweetness keeps the juices flowing.

Overall: (3.5)
- I like the unique qualities of this beer. It looks amazing, smells amazing, but the flavor and feel fall just a touch short. This "wheat-wine" does have a best by date of 10/10, and I am a couple months past that, but for a strengthy beer, that shouldn't make much of a difference except for perhaps a little lack of aroma hops. Very good beer either way.

Review #700... Let's do this

A: this beer started with a difficult time removing the cork, I ended up having to use a cork screw, once open, I poured into a snifter and got 95% head after an overflow. Once it settled down, the appearance is slightly hazy orange with splotchy lacing and plenty of foam.

S: nose presents Belgian characteristics, primarily banana an clove followe by lemon zest and spicy year at the end. The aroma is more like a Saison than a wheatwine

T: starts off slightly sweet and then is dominated by lemon and orange, very estery, finish has a bit of spice and a bit of tartness. Again, not striking me as a typical wheatwine

Mf: high carbonation, medium body

O: well I was a little let down by this. I was surprised by the Belgian influence this beer seems to have, it appears that it is intentional.

Very active pour, tons of fizzy head, decent lace. Nose is pretty mild with wheat, booze, plenty of hops, and yeast. Spicy, but withdrawn.

Taste is spicy; hops meld with the wheat backbone but get clouded by the massive carbonation. Plenty of booze character. Medium-bodied but the excessive carbonation really kills any potential it might have.

Enjoyed at the Ale House in Amesbury, MA. this brew shows a clear amber color with a healthy off-white colored head and gutsy lacing throughout. The aroma mixes refined fruity banana clove with a bubblegum hop that really entices the worthy observer. One of the undeniable scents in beer ken. The flavor brings on big bubblegum hop and biscuit clove over cloying lemon wheat sweetness. This stuff is near full bodied with fine carbonation and a luscious feel. A little thick to be sessionable but a no brainer flavor fest for the Belgian-esque full flavored brew.
