Notes/Commercial Description:
Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

Pours a dark ruby/light brown color with a nice creamy tan head on top. Rich woody aromas dominate the aroma with light hints of alcohol in the background. Malt notes seem to be hidden by the barrel notes.

Barrel notes aren't quite as overpowering on the palate as they were in the aroma. Nice rye kick before the sweet vanilla and oak flavors come through. A bit of a fruity and caramel sweetness mixes in well. Finishes with a bit of heat from the alcohol.

Mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, and certainly full bodied. Overall, a bold and tasty treat with a nice deviation from the usual bourbon-stout combo.

Poured from a corked & caged 750 mL into a Brewers Art goblet. Moderate hand. Batch 01-2013, Best by 11-2014.

A: Hazy, iced tea brown with 1 finger of coarse, off-white head. OK retention. Light lacing.

S: Spicy rye and barrel-aged elements up front - oak, bourbon, caramel, vanilla. Brown sugar. Faint orange, apricot. Sweet bread.

T: Malty, bourbon-like sweetness initially. Very slow build to a mild/moderate hop bitterness and semi-dry finish. Moderately strong booze presence. Peppery, rye spice. Lingering whiskey on the finish.

M: Moderate to light carbonation. Moderate body. Adds to the bourbon essence.

O: You may have noticed the frequent use of the word "bourbon". This is not a mistake - this beer smells, tastes and lights you up like corn whiskey. Which is to say, a fine brew to sip and savor.

Prost!

A- Murky tanish-brown with a hint of amber. Very thin light tan head that fades quickly and leaves a ring of bubbles around the edges of the glass.

S- Earthy rye, sweet sugary bourbon, charred oak. Somewhat subtle, but the nice aromas are there.

T- Similar to the aroma, lots of earthy rye, hints of sweet sugary booze on the back end, with the finish leaving a sweet woody aftertaste.

M- Full bodied, pretty boozy, slight carbonation tingle.

O- A pretty interesting big beer. The flavors do not jump out, but I feel like this would be a good one to drink on a cold night.
