Notes/Commercial Description:
Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

2013 Bottle, poured into Boulevard snifter

A- Pours an auburn brown color with some orange highlights, big creamy & foamy cream colored head that seems to retain forever, leaving thick thick creamy lace when swirled

S- Spicy rye is definitely noticeable up front with some peppery aroma, with it comes a fruity sweetness that brings notes of tangerine & orange flower water. A hint of bourbon juice and oak round it out, complimenting the rye without overpowering it

T- The rye takes front stage with an interesting mix of sweet and spicy flavors. The spicy flavors are peppery and grainy, the sweetness has a caramel maltiness. Light woodsy notes are there, but subtle. The barrel juice kicks in near the finish adding just enough complexity and accentuating the sweetness of the beer. sweet-yet-spicy finish with a hint of bourbon

M- thick and slightly chewy body with low carbonation produces a creamy mouthfeel with a velvety finish. A hint of warmth as it settles, good drinkability despite being 12%

O- One thing that I like about Boulevard's limited release beers, is that they only use a blend of barrel aged beers, complimenting the base beer and allowing the to shine. The rye plays well with the barrel notes and drinks very easily for the ABV. Very good

750mL cork-and-cage topped bottle served in a chalice glass. I am a big fan of rye so I've been excited to finally taste this, though the ABVs seem killer in this big bottle. Best by 11-2015 but I couldn't wait a day longer. Beer pours amber in color with a medium tan head. Intense fruity aroma of raisins and plums, very much reminiscent of barley wine. Or rye wine? And quite a bit of oak in there too, suggesting oaked California Chardonnay. Flavor delivers both the sharp edge of rye graininess and the rich, overwhelming rush of barleywine. And of course the course vanilla and bourbon flavors of the barrel. Yeah, I could easily believe these barrels once held rye bourbon. Boulevard's ingredients list mentions a couple of adjunct sugars, which no doubt pumped up the alcohol as well as left some residual sweetness. though 2.8°P final gravity is pretty freaking low. But where was I? Oh yes, this beer is fantastic, you should drink it.

As previously mentioned I'm a huge fan of rye beers (Lenny's RIPA is a favorite) and this beer takes rye in a totally different direction. Rye and hop bitterness play really well together. But an IPA this is not. It is, however, a fantastic barleywine, and a fantastic way to showcase oak aging. And also a really delicious rye beer.

Boozy number here no doubt. Enjoyed growler from Lincoln Filling Station. Another tremendous beer from Boulevard. At 12% this is a sipper for sure . meant to be enjoyed at a slow pace. Appearance is caramel colored and cloudy. Smell is boozy and rye whiskey. Taste is rye and caramel, booze. Mouthfeel is warming thick and creamy with whiskey notes. Overall a solid 5 best whiskey barrel aged beer I've tried
