Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

An excellent clear, copper red body with a big, fat, thick and creamy white head. Foam clings stubbornly to the glass...

Excellent rye spiciness in the nose with a soft malt grain character. A bit of red licorice is in there as well.

Bold rye and barley taste, well-balanced. Somewhat sour. Soft bitterness sneaks up on you, fading nicely in the finish.

Heavy mouthfeel with a wet, juicy feel in the mouth.

One of the best rye beers I've encountered in a while. Good balance between the grains, hops not overly assertive in the aroma but coming through well in the bittering department. An excellent rye quaff!

Appearance: Pours a dark brown, nearly black. deep, dark color with a strong light tan head. SRM of 21. (4.00)

Aroma: Strong aromas upfront up cherry, oak, and citrus. Scotch and rye follow with some hints of caramel and cocoa. (4.25)

Flavor: Strong flavors upfront of cherry and orange citrus briefly. Then caramel before a strong scotch and rye flavor follows. Whiskey lingers with a sweetness. (3.75)

Feel: Heavier-bodied, average carbonation. Heavy, shows the booze, and leans sweet. (3.75)

Overall: I think the aromas here lend more than the flavor. On the aroma I get cherry, oak and orange citrus balanced by caramel, cocoa, scotch and rye whiskey. On the flavor though the scotch and rye whiskey flavor overpower. This one shows the booze.
Obviously at 14.3% it's somewhat expected, but I think the flavors would show better if the booze was tamed down a bit. I thought their Red Rye beer at 5.2% showed the flavors better.
Still, for a snowy Sunday in late March, this is enjoyable. (Rating: 3.94)

Malty, slight spice at the end, mild vanilla toffee flavors. Subtle booziness.

L= Brown, less deep than cola color, some haziness, a one inch head that fade quickly, leaving minimal lacing.
S= Rye on Rye, indeed! I smell the booze, with chocolate notes and malt underneath.
T= Surprised at deep & strong taste, compared to nose. Big, boozy, chocolate, salt, and malt. Lightly hopped. Rye taste is intense. This 13.4 ABV tastes almost as strong as an 80 proof shot. Absolutely delicious, with fine, stalwart aftertaste.
F= A bit sticky, but what 13.4 ABV beer isn't? Perfectly acceptable, comes with the territory, not an issue.
O= The taste of this beer? It's a knockout, a home run. I will be chasing down more of this brew, and working it into the rotation. Thank you, Boulevard Brewing!

Rye on Rye on Rye – from Boulevard. Mixed six-pack of three barrel-aged brews, limited release for 2023. Picked up at Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA on 08/12/23 for $23.00/six-pack (Including tax, $ 0.319/fl oz. Reviewed 20/12/23 (Review 3198). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on label “PLEASE ENJOY BY 27AUG2025”. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 57.9 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 62.2 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Medium Amber (SRM 12), clear.
Body – Deep Amber (SRM 15), opaque. Under direct light, same with a few large lumps of precipitate. When rear-lit, slight light penetration, red amber. There is distinct chill haze – as it reaches drinking temperature, this weakens to give a beautiful red-amber snifter full of ambrosia.
Head: Average (Maximum two cm, aggressive center pour), beige, initially high density, short retention, dropping to a 0.2 cm crown, and a thin island.
Lacing – Fair. Multiple arches of near-microscopic bubbles. Surprising at 15% ABV but I guess there’s a lot of protein in this libation.
Aroma – 4.5 – Rye whiskey! No malt, no yeast, no hops, no alcohol (15 % ABV as marked on the label).
Flavor – 4.25 – Rye whiskey! No yeast, no malt, no hops, no alcohol. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Medium gastric warming.
Palate – 4 – Medium; smooth and creamy; soft but lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 What! You say this is a beer! Never! Distinctly a very flavorful rye whiskey with an excellent price point. No beer-like qualities to distract from the rye. More bottles will be forthcoming.

Appearance: Its more orange than I imagined as its being poured. Once in the glass its a opaque light brown.

Nose: Roasted Marshmallows, vanilla, caramel, alcohol.

Mouthfeel: Mild carbonation, light feel.

Taste: Definitely a boozy beer, but it is very sweet, with some spicy rye notes, dark sugars, toffee, black treacle, candied dark fruit. Like a British christmas pudding

Finish: Dry finish. Incredible beer, and a great sipper for the winter months.

Poured from a 12-oz bottle well within its date range into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass.

Appearance: Apple cider, with a generous tan head that dissipated rather quickly leaving only a small tan ring and only a little lacing.

Nose: Mild rye alcohol, sweet fermenting apples.

Mouthfeel: Medium light, plenty of carbonation.

Attack: Oh, this is nice — Rye alcohol, medium roast grain, in apple cider. Complex and flavorful.

Finish: Hop bitterness to balance.

Overall: The whole is more than the sum of its parts: this is for me a rare review in which the taste and overall number ratings well exceed some of the other individual ratings. This is a really fine ale. Well done, very well done, Boulevard!

Purchased at Wegmans, Warrington, PA. $15.99/4pk, 12oz bottles.

Pours a semi-opaque, brownish, copper color. A beige color skim of a head on the initial pour. Mild lacing left on the sides of the glass.

Aromas of malt and whiskey. Smells boozy but sweet.

A very tasty yet boozy brew. Sweet malts, caramel, earthy peat and a distinct whiskey taste. Reminds me of a scotch ale. A slightly bitter aftertaste. The ABV is definitely lurking and it makes it a sipper for sure.

Medium to heavier consistency. Low carbonation.

Overall, a very good beer. Pretty boozy which makes it a one a night type of beer, at least for me. Nice to sit back, take a few sips and enjoy all the flavors. A nice addition the the Boulevard line of barrel-aged beers. Well done…Cheers!
