Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

Poured a hazed amber/burnt orange mix with a large blooming off white head.The charred oak really shows thru in the nose along with caramel,and slight green apple.Full on lush feel in the mouth,borderline chewey.Flavords are big in vanilla tinged oak with a touch of char,the rye impart a peppery-like spiciness and green apple-like tartness in the finish.A bigtime complex brew here,big in the oak and rye tartness,very nice.

Thanks to Mike for this one! Truly a most generous BA. Rye-on-rye is a bloody copper color with a fifty-fifty division of cloudiness and clarity. Kind of surprised to see barely any head form, even with a pretty aggressive, nearly straight-down pour. A thin, thin beige collar slowly assembles itself and disperses to the outer edges of the beer, where it meets the glass.

The aroma is plumped up with a good amount of dry rye and a touch of wet oak; even lighter inclusions of whiskey lie somewhere in the background. There's a river of malty, caramel sweetness flowing through that is kept tame by the spicy rye notes. I'm picking up some dense, almost tart apple skin and plum skin notes. Nice, overall, but there's just a touch of cardboard-y oxidation that seems like has taken place.

There's a lot more of that dry and spicy rye with the first sip than the first sniff, with a big whiskey and grain flavor up front. Smooth caramel and toffee malts with a little bit of sticky sweetness - as I mentioned before, the spicy and dry balances the sticky and sweet. A touch of plum shows up again, sans the apples (which is probably a good thing), to add just a slight twinge of borderline tart fruitiness.

The aftertaste is highly reminiscent of rye (or possibly pumpernickel in a lesser sense) bread. The malts tame themselves and the sweetness is alleviated by this time, and you're left with a bready, dry, and rye-filled flavor that coats your palate. Just a slight touch of oxidation has been confirmed with a bit of wet cardboard, giving the beer a slightly "old" flavor. Unfortunate, since the beer is only about a year old. Medium mouth feel; slick, dry, and heavy with low carbonation.

Despite the premature oxidation that has taken place, the beer was still pretty nice and quite drinkable for what it was. I'd really like to have another go at it, with a fresh bottle, as I'm sure it stands the chance to be even better. I'm not the biggest fan of rye beers, but this one was executed nicely, especially if you're a fan of whiskey and dryness.

Deep reddish color with a dirty white head that sticks around.

Big aromas of toasty oak, whiskey, naturally accompanied by alcohol, sweet vanilla, and brown sugar. Clean, but lacks some of the complexity that could really take it to the next level for me. I'm thinking age could definately help this out.

Some rich toffee sweetness on the front of the tongue, lively carbonation leads to a distinct whiskey taste, ending with a spicy burn that reminds you this is a sipper. The warm whiskey fade goes on and on, in a good way, it just limits quantity. I wouldn't open one of these by myself, whew!

EPIC! I never rate beers because I feel they are a personal choice. This one was on another level! Seriously I've had all of the top 5 or more and this one is the best! Thanks Boulevard for doing such a good job with this beer and please, PLEASE, make more for me to imbibe.

750ml brown magnum, batch # and best by date on the label. #10671 out of 12148.

Expressive head but not a foamer, three fingers high from a firm pour. Good dense and rocky formation that plateaus in the middle. Ruddy brown color, good clarity. First sniff is a clean waft of leftover barrel juice from the rye whiskey barrels and the spiciness from the rye seems to come from all directions. Smooth and creamy with a semi-thick body. Rye malt flavor has a firm grasp on the palate, from sweetness to spice to a toasted character. Heavy fume of barrel juice is quelled by the size of the malt character, lightly fusel within. The wood is there but does not pull to hard. Some barrel char and fruitiness add some depth and complexity. Finish is fun but chaotic with all flavors peaking, booze, wood, spicy malt, fruit, etc.

Wow, pretty epic ... an amazing twist on the barrel aged beer movement which is nearly commonplace in the craft beer world. Very happy to run into this bottle.

Had on tap at New World Tavern—served into a pint glass

Appearance: red-brown in color, hazy, 1.5 inch head, moderate carbonation

Smell: whiskey barrel and light rye

Taste: light rye that becomes more present as the beer warms. followed by huge sweet caramel/vanilla/ and toffee with big whiskey oaking through the finish

Mouthfeel: very sticky sweet but not cloying, moderate carbonation, medium bodied

Overall: Amazing. Maybe the best from Boulevard that I have had and certainly one to revisit. I love the oaking in here especially the way it combines with the caramel malt. My only complaint is I wish the rye was more pronounced. That said, as long as I do not expect to get a rye bomb, this is phenomenal.

Thanks to my brother for splitting this bottle with me. Bottle No. 7,873 of 12,148. The beer pours a murky brown color with a tan head. The aroma is strong rye with some oaked notes and dark fruit. The flavor is very nice with rye, cherries, vanilla, oak and a strong, spicy hops and rye finish. The alcohol is fairly noticeable. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Snifter.

Appearance: Rich ruby red with massive bubbly head that looks like it belongs on a root beer float. Great lacing tendrils.

Smell: Caramel, plum and some light oak. Generally spicy and boozy as well.

Taste: There is a strong malty backbone of caramel, plum, toffee and cherry. However, there are equally strong layers from the added rye and the Rye Whiskey barrel aging, with strong spice, oak and booze. Tastes a little bit like a Manhattan, which is really cool.

Feel: Full, thick body with a decent carbonation, as Boulevard seemed to treat the carbonation a little more like a Belgian beer. Very warming.

Overall: Once again, this is like a Manhattan in beer form. Unique, utterly delicious and dangerously sippable.

750ml corked & caged beer poured into a Piraat tulip.

Pours a really nice dark hazy red color with a small white head. Nose is like a fresh rye bread, hops.

Taste is rye whisky, sweet malty booziness. Very sharp an crisp with a light fresh mouthfeel. It's a really solid and drinkable beer for rye lovers.

Rye-on-Rye opens with a malty, smoky, charcoal-and-bourbon aroma that makes immediately apparent the beer’s barrel aging. The whiskey notes are upfront and potent, but not so much that they overpower everything else. Behind them lies a lovely layer of sugars and fruit esters, including heavy dollops of fig, raisin, and prune, as well as molasses, brown sugar, vanilla, pepper, and baking bread. A thin grapefruit and pine layer notes hops, adding citrusy and resin complexity that meshes well with the whiskey. As a whole, the nose is very enticing, and while it can pessimistically take on somewhat of a cola/Dr. Pepper syrup note, the whiskey barrel aging nicely combats this and brings out an alcoholic liquor addition that works very well.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a surprisingly large blast of hops, sending pink grapefruit, pine resin, and lemon washing across the tastebuds. Against this onslaught the other flavors are temporarily opaque, but do slowly come through in syrupy raisin, fig, and prune fruit esters, as well as a noticeable peppery, woody whiskey-like alcohol burn that tingles the soft palate and goes up the nose. Thick brown breads and threads of vanilla become more apparent later in the mouthful, joined by toasted nuts. In subsequent sips the whiskey aging becomes even more apparent, coloring the fruit esters and breads with a nice woody, charcoal-whiskey tone. The aftertaste is a continuation of the main flavors, with surprisingly strong lingering sweet sugars and woodiness, and lasts for a good while. Mouthfeel is a dry (especially in the aftertaste) medium to medium-strong, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is quite delicious fare, and it seems a very wise choice on Boulevard’s part to do a 67% rye whiskey barrel-aged/33% ale mix, as this option provides the beer with both a full, round, flavorful sugary malt base, as well as a nice whiskey overtone that plays off of the other flavors, rather than dominating them (as can happen with 100% barrel-aged beers). The heavy 11% ABV is noticeable throughout the entire mouthful, marking one of the beer’s few weaknesses, but even here that sensation mostly blends well, reminding of the beer’s origins. Very much worth trying.

Poured from a 750 ml corked bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. 2013 bottle with a best by date of 4-12-2014.

Appearance: Pours a very deep and somewhat hazy copper amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Starts out with a nice big four finger off white head that recedes into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A quite complex malt and spice driven aroma with lots of barrel hints. Big scent of rye whiskey upfront along with hints of wood, oak chips, and vanilla. Bready malts with a lot of rye spicing and hints of caramel, toffee, biscuit, peat, and yeast. Some burnt brown sugar and subtle undertones of citrus fruit including orange, grapefruit, and lemon. Also a light hint of licorice. Very woody as the barrel elements are pretty strong. Very interesting and good smell.

Taste: As complex and good as it smells. Big barrel presence throughout with a big taste of rye whiskey, oak chips, wood, and vanilla. Lots of malt taste with big notes of caramel, biscuit, toffee, yeast, and peat. Light anise licorice notes. Some candied brown sugar sweetness. Subtle taste of citrus grapefruit, orange, and lemon. Taste is actually fairly drying and not very boozy. Literally tastes like rye whiskey without the big heat. Really good tasting rye beer here.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Spicy and somewhat chewy. Very smooth for its size. The 12% abv is hidden really well considering.

Overall: A really great barrel aged rye beer. Big rye and barrel flavor and the sweetness and heat is kept in check. Really well done.

Pours out a reddish brown with a fluffy head.

Smells of cotton candy, caramel, vanilla and sweet, sweet rye. Picking up some citrusy hops as well.

Those hops are at the front of this beer... then, that rye kicks in! Man is this good! There is a terrific balance of hops and rye. This is rather sweet. Sugars, caramel and even some apple.

Very creamy mouthfeel. 11% hinders the drinkability a bit, but it is rather well-hidden all things considered.

Bottle from a kind soul - thanks to whoever you are!

Pours a slightly hazy brownish-copper color with a half-finger cream-colored head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of grainy caramel malts with large amounts of spicy rye. Also present are moderate amounts of rye whiskey - vanilla, spice, and oak - and hints of booze-soaked cherries.

Tastes similar to how it smells, although the rye whiskey is a bit more overpowering. Mildly dry caramel malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by spicy rye and dark cherry flavors. Midway through the sip the rye whiskey takes over, carrying through to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a smooth thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall the flavor profile wasn't quite balanced enough to take this beer to the next level, but it is a very interesting beer and those who love rye will certainly want to seek this one. Worth a shot.

Appearance- A dark ruby/amber color that glows nicely when put under a light. As it sits in the Chimay goblet,
one could almost use this beer as a scrying pool. The body of this beer looks haunting. There was about 3 fingers
of an off white creme colored head, that disapated faster than other Smokestack Series beers that I've had.
But the head while it lasted, was fluffy and had a very nice sheen to it. Now as it sits, with the head disappated into
a film of creme bubbles, I take a nose dive. 4.5

Nose- If I could swim in this nose I would probably drown. It's deep. Up front there is a punch of spirits,
to be expected since this is 2/3 blend of wiskey barrel aged ale. The malt character is very, very interesting.
Lots of caramel and toffey dark tones, mixed with some lighter pear and apple notes. Seems there are some hidden berries
buried under the toffey. White grapes, maybe some cherries. Then there is the spice. I personally love spice in malty
ales. There is a really nice cinnimon note here. Love the nose of this beer. 5

Taste- The alcohol in this beer really comes out on the tongue. Very bold flavor. A lot of the darker fruit tones pop
on the tongue. There is a nice toffey/caramel after taste. Then you can really taste the rye malt on the back of the tongue,
which adds a nice bitterness to the overall picture. As the flavor rests a little more in your mouth some of the apple/pears
start to stand out. Pretty tasty. 4

Mouthfeel- The carbonation allows for this to be pretty smooth. Has a nice balance of thickness and not allowing it to coat
your tongue. Pretty nice. 4

Drink- This is a pretty nice beer. The boozyness makes this a total sipper. But, still a delicious drink. 4.5

I picked this bottle up from Friar Tuck in Savoy, IL (thanks Blaine). Number 10605 of 12148. Uncorked with a strong pop. Carbonation was a little more than I expected from an 11% beer. Two finger head retained a nice lacing throughout. Color was similar to a Belgian Dark Strong.

Smells sweet with overtones vanilla and caramel due to the Templeton Rye barrel aging. The rye barreling is very balanced, neither dominating nor hidden. The use of rye grains is most notable in the mouthfeel - a very smooth beer.

Drinkability is limited to your means and ability to acquire this limited edition from Boulevard. I've consumed all of the Boulevard Smokestack series and I would consider this one, along with the Saison with Bret as the best.

A- This beer pours a hazy dense glowing caramel brown body with a sea of racing microbubbles colliding with a thick beige head that last and last sticking to the glass with each sip.

S- The sweet malt and spicy alcohol lead to a paper straw and then green oak barrel aroma with some caramel malt in the finish. There is a soft fusel note and the aroma keeps growing as it opens.

T- The rich dry spicy malt has some buttery caramel flavor with a circus peanut yeast ester growing as does the rich caramel wood finish. The gentle sweetness in the finish is cut by the slight fusel alcohol taste that lingers. Some nice vanilla notes pop through as the depth and flavor grows.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a nice alcohol warmth that grows along with the flavor.

O- The nice sweetness of malt is supported by spice earthy rye and alcohol with a full barrel flavor. This is a great sipper.

750ml shared by Kels, poured into snifters.

A: Pours a murky dark bronzen toffee. Big rocky and loose head on the pour. Pretty good retention with some lacing.

S: Somewhat subtle. Some whiskey notes along with some barrels notes. A good amount of sweetness. Some sweetness that almost reminds me of an infection fruit sweetness and flavor. A bit of the spicy rye bit subtle.

T/M: Light maltiness with light toffee and grains. A touch more spicy rye. Whiskey is a bit bigger but isnt really too hot. Barrel is still light and there's not nearly as much sweetness... Definitely nothing infected. Body is about full with smoothing carbonation.

D: Tasty, interesting, and about as drinkable as 11% can get.

Beer number 4 of the Astros #brewandbaseball challenge! I'm behind but doing my best to catch up. Poured from bottle into CBS Snifter. Pours a nearly transparent dark amber color, some decent head retention, which is surprising given the ABV and Barrel aging. A creamy looking texture to this beer. Smell- booze, molasses, some spicy bready notes from the rye. Woody barrel notes, some vanilla. Alcohol is obvious. This will be a really boozy bastard. Taste- the booze is puckering. its pretty much all I am getting at the front of the tongue, resembles straight rye whiskey. Some nice woody notes and vanilla linger around the sides of my mouth, but I struggle to get a lot of depth and complexity to this one. After the booze, it seems that the flavors are a little muddled. Nothing stands out, but this is a beer that will have to develop in order to be worthy. I'll review again after a year and see what comes of it, but would not recommend to drink it fresh. Not a great experience, not a horrible one.

2013 Pours a nice 2-3 inch off white foamy head with ruby red transparency.

Rye spice in the nose. Some hop. Charred oak and some booze.

Tastes upfront on hop and then the rye takes over. Charred oak flavor and vanilla. Breadiness in there. Pert near like drinking rye whiskey. I've never had Templeton before, now I have.

Full bodied brew with low carbonation. Alcohol is warming and welcome.

Stellar brew done well in style! Big bottle of this asks you to invite a friend. Nice brew for the launchpad.

A story of rye, for the rye and of the rye.Enormous head on beige body. Mild rye spice aroma. Above average body, Decent surprisingly smooth drinkability. The taste yields much barreling including vanilla and coconut, perhaps a result of maximum time recommended in bottle,just a drop of faint sour. Bottle from IP with Steve in Warren.

A - dark caramel with a thick, brown head that has great retention; some floaties throughout

S - esters, some faint rye, alcohol

T - peppery rye, fruity esters, some apple, alcohol

M - medium to full bodied, warming alcohol, smooth

This is a really nice beer. The flavor isn't as intense as I would have expected and it's not overly complex. This beer is very drinkable for the ABV and has a nice solid flavor profile that shows off the immense rye character. This is a must try for all rye fans.

Pours a murky, ruddy red-amber. Very sudsy, but little head visible. Carbonation continues to bubble as the glass warms. Odd and unusual.

Nose is unique -- I get wet wood, some fruitiness, butter, and toffee. Not that it's bad, just an unusual combination, again.

Flavor is fruits/berries and some toffee -- sweet and somehow wine-like. I don't detect much of the rye whiskey barrel, though, as this one just seems more of a fruit-oriented champagne style. It's quite easy to drink, and especially with the very deceptive 13% ABV.

Overall, certainly a memorable and genre-busting brew.

750mL cork-and-cage topped bottle served in a chalice glass. I am a big fan of rye so I've been excited to finally taste this, though the ABVs seem killer in this big bottle. Best by 11-2015 but I couldn't wait a day longer. Beer pours amber in color with a medium tan head. Intense fruity aroma of raisins and plums, very much reminiscent of barley wine. Or rye wine? And quite a bit of oak in there too, suggesting oaked California Chardonnay. Flavor delivers both the sharp edge of rye graininess and the rich, overwhelming rush of barleywine. And of course the course vanilla and bourbon flavors of the barrel. Yeah, I could easily believe these barrels once held rye bourbon. Boulevard's ingredients list mentions a couple of adjunct sugars, which no doubt pumped up the alcohol as well as left some residual sweetness. though 2.8°P final gravity is pretty freaking low. But where was I? Oh yes, this beer is fantastic, you should drink it.

As previously mentioned I'm a huge fan of rye beers (Lenny's RIPA is a favorite) and this beer takes rye in a totally different direction. Rye and hop bitterness play really well together. But an IPA this is not. It is, however, a fantastic barleywine, and a fantastic way to showcase oak aging. And also a really delicious rye beer.

appearance: served in my great lakes chalice, auburn body - fairly clear, heavy beige head, with a nice lace

smell: barrel - oak, whiskey, vanilla, cherry, spiced rye

taste: lovely beer - showcases the barrel quite well - oak, whiskey, cedar, dark cherries, vanilla, pepper, spicy rye loaf, sweet malts.

mouthfeel: sharp carbonation, medium body, creamy finish

overall: great stuff - as expected from the smokestack series

COLD COCKED!!!! HOLY $hit!! Boilermaker in a BOTTLE!!! You have to like Jim Beam to enjoy this beer!

You can smell the whiskey/bourbon immediately. The beer starts off like a typical rye then finishes like a shot of bourbon. The color was a cloudy amber.

I had too many bad experiences with JB to enjoy this but grateful to at least try it. To those that can hang with this beer....more power to them! Boulevard nailed this beer!!! Anyone thinking session beer would absolutely get their A$$ kicked!
