Notes/Commercial Description:
Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

Night cap after dinner in a tulip.

A: Brown/amber with slight head. In contrast to the pours from the cork and cage, there was only a little head here from the keg.

S: Lots of sweet vanilla/toffee with rye whiskey that gets much more obvious deeper into the glass with warming.

T: Rye everywhere and the barrel is there but not overwhelming. Sweet with figs/raisins/dates with a hint spiciness on the finish. The whiskey flavor just gets better and better as it gets warm.

M: Good carbonation and not sticky. Surprised it was 12%

O: Big. Glad I had the 12oz pour as a big bottle would need 3-4 to enjoy. Great fireplace sipper.

Once again: full disclosure that I love huge beers, Boulevard and anything rye so I am biased. On vacation and this is day 5 of big beer, good food, happy kids and a warm wife. The snow is deep and after a good day riding, we are watching the Olympics

Vintage 2014, so she a bit young

A- tawny copper , tiny head with persistent lacing

S- orange, malt, solvent spirits

T- Unfortunately the alcohol hits first, followed by a puckering dryness that is not hops. Lots of rye. Hints of orangey brown sugar

M- perfect body, but the feeling of alcohol lingers, like I just gargled with a medicinal product

IMHO it's got a long way to go before it matures. I was hoping to be blown away, but I think it needs a bit of time. The fundamentals are great. I actually now plan on buying 2 more, but it will be 2 years until I revisit. Not guessing, but I anticipate this giant will blossom into wider realms of flavor. With this amount of barrel/rye whiskey at the outset, fading will Not be an issue.

For more moderate suggestion of Rye Beer: Southern Tier 2x Rye is awesome right away. Red' s Rye by Founders was once my " if I could only drink one beer forever" choice

Appearance is a hazy reddish orange brown in the big snifter. Very fine-grained foam that lasts and lasts with big clots of lacing. Delightful creamy texture. Interesting aroma of fruity and boozy, like a liqueur.

I'm not sure the rye grain comes through so well with all the boozy flavors. Overall this is sharp, bitter, and slathered with wood and whiskey flavors. Big candy taste of something very strange. Persimmon flavors, raisins, butterscotch, fruit cake. Moderate sweetness. The bitter aftertaste has a hint of medicine to it. Something to sip on, very slowly.

This is the 2014 edition. From the 750 ml bottle purchased at Bine & Vine in San Diego.
