Notes/Commercial Description:
Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

Appearance is a hazy reddish orange brown in the big snifter. Very fine-grained foam that lasts and lasts with big clots of lacing. Delightful creamy texture. Interesting aroma of fruity and boozy, like a liqueur.

I'm not sure the rye grain comes through so well with all the boozy flavors. Overall this is sharp, bitter, and slathered with wood and whiskey flavors. Big candy taste of something very strange. Persimmon flavors, raisins, butterscotch, fruit cake. Moderate sweetness. The bitter aftertaste has a hint of medicine to it. Something to sip on, very slowly.

This is the 2014 edition. From the 750 ml bottle purchased at Bine & Vine in San Diego.

Really, Really excellent and well made Rye Ale. Looks beautiful, big copper penny glow with a creamy dense head. You get plenty of Rye spice and some booziness in the nose. Flavors are a combo of Rye spice and sweetness, with a slight citrusy undertone, a bit of vanilla oak butteriness. I get plenty of oak and whisky notes, but not really a lot of char. 12% ABV is well hidden, save for a bit of astringent boozy heat in the finish. I like how Boulevard blends the base rye ale (1/3) with the barrel aged ale (2/3) so that the booziness doesn't override the delicious spice of the rye malt grain bill.

This really deserves to be sat upon for another couple of years, but it's delicious now. I'll go buy a couple more to cellar.

A: translucent reddish-amber, dark reddish-brown away from the light; clear with the exception of streaming carbonation; fluffy beige head with mixed fine and spotty larger bubbles, settles into a centimeter or so of covering; intricate tight, broad lacing
S: sweet bourbon and malt, buttery
T: astringent, bourbon, grass
M: medium-bodied, dry finish
O: almost always personally disappointed when a beer's other flavor's don't mask the astringency of a high alcohol content. I want to be respectful of the style, but bourbon beers are apparently not my thing, starting from the basic bourbon flavor to the sweetness to the astringency.

Aroma: spicy malt, prominent sweet bourbon sweetness.

Appearance: Amber brilliantly clear.

Taste: light caramel, vanilla, spicy rye, prominent bourbon/whiskey finish.

Mouthfeel: medium, whiskey bite lingers into the finish. Needs a bit more carbonation.

Overall: great beer, hides the alcohol well.

I looked for this while on a trip to KC but was told it sold out in the stores in about two weeks. Back home in Sacramento I find that Total Wine still has plenty!

A- pours the color of an old penny, slightly hazy with a thin, creamy and persistent head.

S- A well balanced combination of rye, whiskey barrel, booze and vanilla. No hops.

T- Starts sweet and boozy followed by a rich malt flavor and then dark cherries. Rye spice and a bit of heat from the alcohol leave a nice clean finish.

M- This is a strong as some barely wines I've had but it somehow maintains a lighter body without any syrupy sweetness. I like the bit of heat toward the end. Smooth carbonation helps keep things on the light side.

O- Malt and wood forward with no discernible hop flavor or aroma but just enough bitterness to provide balance. A classic to look forward to each year.

Poured a brownish body with decent head and lace and has a sweet, boozy aroma, picking up a good amount of not only bourbon/barrel notes with alcohol but love the dark fruits (figs/raisins) and minor rye base (not overpowering) in the aroma. A medium bodied beer that is chewey and has some sweetness to it, figs and plums coming through with a little bit of sugary goodness and there is a woodiness and alcohol kick to this beer - the rye makes the beer real smooth and adds some heat and alcohol bite to this beer as well as a touch of sweetness; the rye is front and center in this beer. At times the sweetness is puckering but overall the beer is well balanced and the ABV is kept in check and this is just a solid drinking beer.

2014 vintage

Big pop when the cork comes out. Definitely some pent up carbonation as the head erupts and sticks around forever. It's a little yellowy/off-white and the body is dark with orange and red coming out in the light. Laces superbly.

Seems like it could have been 100% barrel aged with the alcohol notes and spicy whiskey coming off the nose. A little sweet. Caramel and cherry.

Rye whiskey, rye malt and 12% alcohol is prominent bringing plenty of warmth and spice. The cherry note from the aroma is fairly prevalent as well.

Damn this drinks amazing. Smooth medium bodied with some slight tingly bubbles. Ends a little dry.

I could see this aging great. Too bad I just drank my only bottle.
