So I guess that means my glassware is clean - that's a solid three fingers of head - writing this to give it time to settle down some.
Deep black and velvety-looking, with a relatively dark tan head, which is still at a full finger, and leaving behind lace as it recedes.
Heavily roasted and toasted, with underlying dark fruits - not significant, but definitely there.
Oh, dear. This is not good. Really not good. Coming to temperature, the full spectrum of malts presents itself. But it's really the dark fruit that blows me away - mildly acidic, but unique in that it melds so completely with the roasted malts - so tasty that I will likely be extremely unproductive both before and after enjoying it. Really not good.
It absolutely envelopes your tongue, digging in its malt hooks, and hanging on for what seems like an eternity. Smooth like I can't believe, with only a bit of hoppiness to close.
All year/week/day long, I could be sitting here, awaiting a college basketball game, or watching a DVR'd movie, with a bottle of this by my side. Exceptional beer.
Update Oct. 18, 2013 - Nearly four years and two kids later, I'm drinking the second bottle I bought that day. It's been in my basement fridge ever since.
The huge head was somewhat surprising - until I read this post and it reminded me that it was to be expected.
Similar to what I wrote a few years ago, but it may have smoothed out some since - just velvety now. Every bit as enjoyable.
