Poured a deep black/brown with a toffee colored head that seemed to last forever. Left lacing that lasted throughout the tasting.
Aromas were quite fantastic. Spiciness hits you up front with the smell of herbs and earthy flavorings. Some astringency is present, but it is mild and not overpowering. Mild chocolate aromas come to life that lead into faint coffee. I decided this was the smell I want my house to have. I smelled this stout for a while enjoying it's aromas until I decided to take the first sip...
The taste mirrored the flavors found in the aromas. There was an earthy base with notes of dark chocolate and coffee. I'm not a big fan of big coffee stouts, and this one seems to be just right. It's not overly sweet either, with the hop bitterness balancing well. The creaminess of this stout is superb as the complexity of this beer continues to present itself. In my mind there are truly very few stouts that are of this caliber. My ONLY complaint, if there is anything to complain about, is the slight stringency that comes about a second after it hits your tongue. It dissipates quickly and allows the wonderful flavors to come through.
The creaminess of this stout really entices you. You do notice the alcohol, and that is what holds you back. Really a wonderful beer for great sipping.
