Notes/Commercial Description:
Throughout the ages, man has been fascinated by the quest for hidden knowledge, the search for the secret to transforming the elemental into the extraordinary, the simple into the sublime. Ladies and gentlemen, we present for your consideration this exotic, inky concoction, the almost magical creation of our modern day alchemists who have turned humble grains—barley, wheat, rye, and oats—into black, liquid gold. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, crème brulée. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish.

Dark Truth serves as a proper name for a beer that poured with immense blackness and a deep brown head of dense foam.

The aroma seems simple with dry chocolate, smoke and a phenolic plastic.

The flavor is smokey and meaty, with dry chocolate malt. The meat flavor is a dried smoked beef jerky like taste with some smokey campfire ember.

The feel is exceptionally dry, with a full smokiness in the mouth.

I enjoyed this as it resembled a Rauschbier but held some stout flavor but I'd like to have had more of the stout qualities come through.

A: Poured into a pint glass. Body is black with a half inch tan head. With a lot of lacing all down the glass the glass.

S: A lot of roasty malt and fruit - think plums or red grapes.

T: Chocolate malt, dark fruits (plums again come to mind), a hint of molasses all on top of a decently roasted malt foundation. Heat from ABV is noted on the back of the palate and on the way down. As it warms, more chocolate - think dark dark hot chocolate on a winter night.

M: Active carbonation that's real fizzy in feel. Intriguing and makes it drink "lighter" than your standard Double imperial stout.

O: Interesting Imperial Stout. I REALLY ENJOY this stout, roasty and chocolatey.

I got this as part of a 4-pack gift set of Boulevard Brewery's Smokestack Series beers. 12oz. brown bottle with no freshness date.

The beer poured a jet black color with a 2-finger brown head on top that lasted about a minute and left tons of lacing.

The beer smells chocolaty with lots of dark fruits, roasted malts, and coffee. Very nice.

Wow, there's lots going on in here. The website lists over 10 different malts, 4 varieties of hops, brown sugar, honey, and oats as part of the ingredients. The main flavors are roasted malt, raisins, prunes, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and cocoa powder. There are also plenty of hops in here for balance (60 IBU's to be exact). The hops are both citrusy and a little spicy. Delicious.

This is a really smooth and full bodied beer with moderate carbonation. For a 9.7% alcohol brew the alcohol is not overpowering at all but does give it a gentle warming touch.

I was a bit leery of trying a beer with over 15 ingredients in it. Wasn't sure if they'd get in the way of each other or become a complete mess, but this isn't the case at all. The resulting mix is a really excellent porter. I highly recommend trying this one.
