Notes/Commercial Description:
Throughout the ages, man has been fascinated by the quest for hidden knowledge, the search for the secret to transforming the elemental into the extraordinary, the simple into the sublime. Ladies and gentlemen, we present for your consideration this exotic, inky concoction, the almost magical creation of our modern day alchemists who have turned humble grains—barley, wheat, rye, and oats—into black, liquid gold. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, crème brulée. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish.

Pours jet black with a beautiful mocha colored head, about an inch worth, that reduces after a bit but is easily revived. Looked very viscous while pouring.

Very fruity esters in the smell like a dark cherry, definitely that belgian yeast at work. Sweet, candied sugar aromas, dark roasted malts, and a hint of coffee, and just a touch of alcohol starts to work its way through in the end.

There is a lot going on in this beer. I've never had a stout to my knowledge brewed with Belgian yeast, and i've got to say i love the contrast of the fruitiness and the dark roasted quality. I can see where it gets its name. I don't find this to be all that bitter as other reviewers have mentioned but the hops and toasti bitterness do come through just enough to balance out the sweetness of this candied goodness. The alcohol is hidden really well in the taste. As it warms, i'm starting to taste some coffee flavors permeating through in the end after each sip.

Definitely full bodied, with an ample amount of carbonation, a bit on the higher side, the kind that bites at your tongue on first sip, which i'm unaccustomed to in a stout.

Big and delicious, i'd say this drinks dangerously smooth. I have a 4 pack, so i will probably hold on to one of the bottles to see what a few months does to this beer. Will buy again, and highly recommended for any lover of stouts.

A - It is pretty much black. A normal pour yielded half a glass of mocha head.

S - I get some coffee and dark chocolate aromas. I also notice some smokiness. As it warms some dark fruit becomes apparent.

T - I tasted the dark fruit right away. Some cocoa comes through. It finishes with a bitter coffee flavor. A little bitter for my liking.

M - Full

O - I loved the smell. The bitter finish was not for me. I think I would have preferred this beer with some age.

Best by 12/2/15. Me drink today.

Pours a midnight dark black ale with a big beige foamy head. Decent staying power and good lacing.

Aroma is very leathery, smokey, tree sap, molasses, light pine, cola and cocoa powder.

Initial taste was very spicy though it calms as the beer warms. Very espresso forward taste and a slight fruit swallow. Baking chocolate. There is a slight spicy bite on each sip. Slightly unusual but not totally off-putting. Different.

Carbonation is definitely not lacking.

Overall I think this is a unique experience with the spice bite on each sip. Other than that, I thought this was kinda ordinary. Maybe some age on this would change my mind. Not sure.

Bottle from Cost Plus World Market Palm Springs CA - 2012 edition - $3.50

Appearance - Dark brown colour with a small size frothy head. There is a low amount of carbonation showing and there is some great lacing. The head lasted for around 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, grains

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate, and faint coffee. There is also some fruity notes, smoke, and some anise.

Overall - Interesting blend of flavours. The smokey/fruity notes make this one a little different from your typical RIS. A good beer but I think I prefer the stereotypical flavours.

Dark Truth serves as a proper name for a beer that poured with immense blackness and a deep brown head of dense foam.

The aroma seems simple with dry chocolate, smoke and a phenolic plastic.

The flavor is smokey and meaty, with dry chocolate malt. The meat flavor is a dried smoked beef jerky like taste with some smokey campfire ember.

The feel is exceptionally dry, with a full smokiness in the mouth.

I enjoyed this as it resembled a Rauschbier but held some stout flavor but I'd like to have had more of the stout qualities come through.
