Notes/Commercial Description:
Throughout the ages, man has been fascinated by the quest for hidden knowledge, the search for the secret to transforming the elemental into the extraordinary, the simple into the sublime. Ladies and gentlemen, we present for your consideration this exotic, inky concoction, the almost magical creation of our modern day alchemists who have turned humble grains—barley, wheat, rye, and oats—into black, liquid gold. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, crème brulée. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish.

appearance: big black with more than two fingers of off white head. the head is even, long lasting and leaves stringy lacing.

smells wacky. belgian yeast mixed with intense roasted malts, chocolate and a hint of espresso. not sure if me likey or if me no likey.

taste: i just cant get past the yeastiness. heavily roasted malts, chocolate and espresso are hidden behind almost standard belgian "funkyness".

mouthfeel: ridiculously refreshing for its magnitude. it slides down easy and leaves nothing but a chocolatey feel in the back of the throat.

drinkability: try one. it may be a tad expensive but it is definately a unique beer and worth the experience. and even if you dont like the flavor, with 25 oz of a 9.7 you wont be too disappointed.

Bottle from Cost Plus World Market Palm Springs CA - 2012 edition - $3.50

Appearance - Dark brown colour with a small size frothy head. There is a low amount of carbonation showing and there is some great lacing. The head lasted for around 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, grains

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate, and faint coffee. There is also some fruity notes, smoke, and some anise.

Overall - Interesting blend of flavours. The smokey/fruity notes make this one a little different from your typical RIS. A good beer but I think I prefer the stereotypical flavours.

A: Pours pitch black with a thick, cookie like head. A beauty.
S: complex. I get whiffs of dark fruit, roasted barley a tad of coffee as well. A nice blend of earthiness and vinous-fruits.
T: This packs a punch. Big time notes of roasted malt, coffee and dark fruit. The Belgian influence really comes through here. The hops peek through at the end and provide a bittnerness that pulls everything together. A nice, hot, spicy and boozy finish.
M: fantastically smooth and velvety. A slightly bitter and smoky hang that warms as it goes down. Nice carbonation at the start but it mellows nicely. A nice body, but drinks well.
O: This is an interesting and damn tasty stout. I love the Belgian overtones and the fact that this brew doesn't try to hide its 9.7%. Let this warm a bit and its complexities really show.
