Notes/Commercial Description:
Throughout the ages, man has been fascinated by the quest for hidden knowledge, the search for the secret to transforming the elemental into the extraordinary, the simple into the sublime. Ladies and gentlemen, we present for your consideration this exotic, inky concoction, the almost magical creation of our modern day alchemists who have turned humble grains—barley, wheat, rye, and oats—into black, liquid gold. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, crème brulée. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish.

Final bottle from gift set that includes glass. Been a good deal so far and I expect the same for this one.
Best buy date still a couple of years out.
Very dark with no light showing through. Rather large dense head.
Dark somewhat heavy roast with a slight tartness, slight vinous and a bit of fruit. In time a bit of smoke appears. A touch of alcohol
RIS in flavor profile. Rich dark malts, definitely, and they fill the palate. Extremely long finish with soft malt bitterness and dark grains lingering. Hop flavor of German type as noted on bottle - soft spicy quality. Nice roast and dark fruit flavors. Towards the end a little shot of alcohol appears - previously not noted so much.
More carbonated than expected or generally desire for style, yet somehow not distracting or bothersome in any manner tonight. Solid moderate feel enhance some by the bubbles.
Not quite an easy drinker for an RIS, but on the easier side of the spectrum. Good solid, interesting and enjoyable.

Serving: Poured from a 12oz bottle into a glass, almost exactly like the one pictured on the label.

Appearance: Really dark, almost black. Poured about four fingers of head that finally sank to about one, after 5min.

Smell: Funk (presumably from the Belgian yeast), chocolate, coffee

Taste: Sour? But not like brett sour... I'm guessing from the rye in the grain bill? Bitter black chocolate. Not pleasant, but not altogether unpleasant.

Mouthfeel: About what I'd expect from a good beer. Not too thick, but not too thin.

Overall: This beer drinks like a robust porter... but it's not what I expected when I read the description from the brewery. The rye and Belgian yeast underscore the chocolate overtones and make the beer taste like you're drinking a really dark chocolate bar... which is great, unless you're like me and you're a milk chocolate person.

I've heard this beer called "A poor man's Black Metal" but I'm not sure where the "poor" part comes in, since this is $11 for a 4-pack.

This is another one of those beers I can tell is a well made beer - but it's just not a beer that's made for me... and that's okay. I can live with that. I just don't think I'll be buying any more of it. I'd like to try some of their other beers though.

Poured into an imperial pint glass. Poured a almost pitch black completely opaque with a light brown creamy head. 2 finger head lasted around 10 minutes, before leaving a thin layer that clung extremely well to the sides. Aroma at times was a sugary sweet lactose sugar, a creamy milk chocolate, and a smokey smell as well. Taste started off a burnt bitter, and changed to a slightly sticky sweet, akin to a thick barleywine. Felt dead on. Coated very well with just a touch of carbonation. Pretty much how I look for a stout to feel. Over all, a good beer. Flavor was a bit off compared to the rest of it, that kept it down a smidge.

A - Very dark, a beautiful black. Tan head, one finger.

S - Lots of roasted malts, chocolate, spice, smokiness, and some fruit. Smells like a big, majestic stout.

T - Not a big majestic stout, but not a bad beer. The nose is better than the taste. Roasty malt and fruit dominate. Hops on the early finish.

M - Has the creaminess you'd expect from an Imperial Stout. Wonderful.

Overall: Not a disappointment, not overwhelming. But a good stout. If you enjoy stouts it can be appreciated.

Poured from an aged (roughly 2 years) bomber into a tulip for a couple of servings. Pours an excellent inky black with a light mocha colored foam. Smells of deep and diverse malt flavors with hints of dark fruit and a slight bit of coffee

Drinks a diverse and somewhat bitter yet slightly thin (could be a temperature thing) malty beginning which gives way to a hop snap and finishes with some rich malt and light coffee flavor. Some lingering bitterness helps enforce the coffee taste.

think I let this one mellow but it is still a delicious stout

I'm a huge Stout fan and I was eagerly awaiting my Dark Truth Stout experience. The color and the head poured marvelously but the taste was lacking something. A great beer, but to be picky I think it was lacking that "it" factor so many other stouts have. I don't think it is terribly different from the Boulevard Stout, just a little higher malt content and, therefore alcohol content.
