Notes/Commercial Description:
Throughout the ages, man has been fascinated by the quest for hidden knowledge, the search for the secret to transforming the elemental into the extraordinary, the simple into the sublime. Ladies and gentlemen, we present for your consideration this exotic, inky concoction, the almost magical creation of our modern day alchemists who have turned humble grains—barley, wheat, rye, and oats—into black, liquid gold. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, crème brulée. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish.

Bottle poured into a snifter

Dark blackish color with a decent brown colored foam head.

Smell is roasted malty with a background of a chocolate/coffee hint.

Taste is roasty and smokey with coffee notes. Slight sweetness to it. Suprise bitterness on the finish. Finish also seems a bit thin

A strong stout that just misses the high end for me.

A-black with a brown head

S-bitter dark roasted grains. Not strong. Slightly creamy and spicy.

T-comes in with a bitter and sour taste of milk chocolate and dark grains. It's a smooth taste with a creamy after-taste strong of the dark grains. It's okay.

M-creamy medium carbonation with a semi dry finish.

O-Definitely more of a RIS than American imperial stout. It's okay. Not terrible for the price.

Review from 5/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark brown with an aggressive tan head, leaves moderate lacing. Aroma of malt and sour fruits. Light roasty malts and moderate dark fruits and malt. Dark fruit and malt middle with a mild hop finish. An unusual stout transition with more fruit than malt. Moderate body. Not as complex as some other stouts, but perhaps a more interesting flavor combination

12oz bottle into New Belgium globe

A - huge, thick, dense light tan head that retreats ever so slowly. Deep dark brown almost black in appearance. Fantastic lacing. Good looking indeed.

S - roasted malt, some char and a hint of smoke. I think I can detect a very mild spiciness. Less than I had anticipated.

T - a sweetness covers the other tastes. The char and malt are there but are subdued. An overwhelming creaminess prevails. Character is weak.

M - Very smooth and creamy...to a flaw. Carbonation is about right and the feel helps carry a moderate beer a little farther.

O - First off, this is a decent stout. Nothing ground breaking or even overly memorable but solid. That said, it is too one dimensional at this price point to warrant a repeat performance. Would have liked to have more body and character to help it stand out amongst a very crowded category.

Thanks Bruce! Pours black with a small, light-brown head that takes some time to go down. Scent has some smoke to it with a bit of burnt malt and lots of milk chocolate. Chocolate helps balance the bunt malt...making it not overly bittering. Subtle vanilla with a hoppy finish. Taste is almost like it smells, but a bit hoppier and more bitter than expected. Not a citrusy bitter though (like the imperial stout from Victory), which is very off-putting for me. This one works well with the hoppy bitterness. A lot more dark fruit flavors than the nose implied. Drinkability is high. Mouthfeel is dry for an imperial stout. Overall, this is definitely different for the style, but it's great!

The beer pours a blackish brown color with longlasting, creamy head and very good lacing. Head retention is excellent as well in this beer. On the nose, I pick up considerable coffee grounds and licorice, but with some roasty malt, tobacco and light smoke as well. This beer smells pretty good. The flavor profile replicates the nose in this modestly sweet beer, with the licorice and coffee grounds keeping the sweetness in check very nicely. Mouthfeel is where this beer really shines I think. Despite the relatively high abv., there's a lightness to this beer that I appreciate, that goes well with the soft, creamy mouthfeel. The finish is long with the alcohol barely noticeable in this nicely crafted beer.

While I wouldn't put this up there with the IRS royalty out there (KBS, CBS, black note, abyss, etc.), this is still a pretty tasty, well made beer by Boulevard.

12oz : snifter

Pours near black with a creamy, light brown head.

Moderate roasty, charred wood/coffee. Some cocoa, an a light hoppy bitterness in the finish.

Medium-full body with prickly carbonation, light boozy warmth in the finish.

An enjoyable enough Imperial Stout, nothing too spectacular but still pleasant.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Weyerbacher tulip. Bottled 4/16/12.

A - Typical appearance for the style. Black with a finger or two of mocha head. Shows good retention and leaves nice lace behind.

S - Smells of roasted wood, char, and mellow vanilla. Some coffee and dark fruits sneak in as well. Good but not great aroma.

T - Big campfire smokiness covers the other flavors from the nose. Very bitter for the style. Sweetens as it warms as dark fruits and chocolate emerge. The conglomerate of flavors works very well.

M - Carbonation is light, combining with the medium body for a creamy feel. The initial bitterness of the char drys the palate, but this phenomena dwindles more with each sip.

O - Found this one on a recent beer run to State Line Liquors in MD. Not a brewer I am used to having access to, so I picked up a few of their offerings. This one was toasty and bitter, which I enjoyed. Improved considerably as it warmed and new flavors joined the party. I really enjoyed it and will get it again.

Poured from a bottle into a tumbler pint, the beer is a dark ruby-brown to black coloring with a thick, frothy, dense, tall, light brown colored head. The head retention is ridiculous...looks very tasty. Aromas of oak and char, with a subtle smokiness. Smells rich. Flavors are chocolate and apple sweet, with an oaky and earthy presence that keeps it balanced and avoids the cloying feels. Dark, roasted coffee is consistent throughout the palate. Rich, slick feel in the mouth with a slight smoke and nut aftertaste. The finish is crisp and bitter, with some of the coffee characteristics imparted for a while on the palate.
