Availability: Spring

Notes/Commercial Description:
Boss Tom’s Golden Bock is our seasonal offering for late spring. The smooth, soft maltiness of this traditional lager is complemented by a noticeable but restrained hop presence. The beer finishes with a lingering dryness and just a hint of caramel. The word “bock” also means “billy goat,” and images of goats are often used as a symbol of the style.

Boss Tom has brought a new golden era to Kansas City.

Looks like a dark golden version of your standard American pilsner, actually. The deeper hue gives it away that it's not standard issue, but the untrained eye might not immediately recognzie the goodness that is within.

Full malts are at the fore, with an underlying hoppiness that are somewhat difficult to find, they seem to pull the nose of the beer together.

Malty, with a creaminess that comes through as sweet - almost like honey. A spark of hoppiness awakens the tongue to everything else the beer holds.

Clean with a crisp bite on the tongue - slowly fades to reveal only a lingering bit of maltiness.

So easy to drink - a complete non-thinker. This is a great summertime beer. Best served with a deck chair and the warming sun.

A golden color with some substance and a thin layer of white head.

The aroma is of soft grains, maybe some lemon and honey.

Laid back mouthfeel with soft grainy, German malt notes and a quick, mostly clean finish.

This is a light tasting, light bodied beer that fits in well for the season. Good lawn mower beer.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is not very good, with a mix of corn, grass and grain. The flavor is more of the same, with a mix of grain and grassy hops dominating the palate. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. There are a lot of good beers from Boulevard, but I really didn't enjoy this one very much.

Bottle via trade with GCurlow – thanks!

Pours a clear golden-brown color with a half-finger white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of light caramel malts with very slight hints of darker toasted malts. Also present are hints of leafy hops.

Tastes very similar to how it smells, though a good bit sweeter. Caramel malt flavors kick things off and quickly sweeten with the addition of light toasted malts. Midway through the sip the sweetness subsides a bit with the addition of earthy hops. The hops fade out quickly, fading out into a mildly sweet ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It’s got a nice thickness with decent carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I didn’t have a problem finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall I thought the sweetness of the malts was just a bit over the limit of what I find enjoyable but it didn’t completely destroy that limit. Worth a shot, especially if you like the style.

Poured into a pint.

Appearance: Pours a nice caramel golden color. This might be the clearest Boulevard product I've seen. This had a big of slightly off white fluffy head that receded pretty quick, not a lot of lacing. Not bad.

Smell: Some grassy hops start off this lager. Followed by some sweet pear juices. A tiny hint of candied fruits. Other than that, there's not much.

Taste: Some really nice malt going on here. More pear juices, and other fruits. Some grassyness. Dececnt.

Mouth: Bright carbonation is nice on the tongue. Pretty thin mouthfeel. Pretty standard for a lager me thinks. Doesn't coat the mouth.

Drink: This beer tastes pretty good, and with the low abv would make for a really easy session beer.

A- This beer pours a crystal clear golden body with a sticky bubbly snow white head that last in sheets on the side of the glass and slowly slides back into the beer. There is a swirling carbonation of tiny bubbles.

S- The fresh sweet honey malt aroma turns nougaty as it opens up with a flinty hop bitterness coming through in the finish.

T- The clean slightly sweet malt note is followed by a green dry hop note in the finish that is almost just a bite. There is a carbonic acid taste that lingers a moment. As the beer opens a watery taste and sulfur note start to grow.

M- This beer has a light crisp fizz mouthfeel with no alcohol heat noticed.

O- This beer has a nice mellow sweetness with a touch of hops and a crisp mouthfeel but the sweetness is more nougat and not much malt flavor to the sweetness. The watery and sulfur taste also get in the way.

A - This clear and vibrant gold brew has the look of your average macro lager. The head is small but persistent, and a little bit of foamy lace is left on the glass. This looks pretty damn unimpressive.

S - Ahh. So its not a macro lager after all. Denser malt and some pilsener-like saltiness are very subdued, but pleasant enough.

T - Light grainy malts and a hint of noble hops. To me, this tastes like a subdued German pils or something. This is pretty weak at first, but the finish builds on the hop tang with some almost lemon-like flavors.

M - Light bodied, slightly creamy, and moderately carbonated. This is MUCH less fizzy than BMC stuff, however. The alcohol is detectable, but not invasive. This has an almost silky lightness on the palate that is sort of creamy, but without the weight of beers that I would usually describe as such.

D - This is an easily quaffable brew, but I don't understand the relatively high rating that this has been receiving. To me it falls into a similar flavor profile as a lot of Japanese or Mediterranean lager. Definitely head and shoulders above BMC, but still a pretty basic beer. The good part is that I could drink about a million of these without really thinking about it.

12oz twist off bottle, mini jar "tasting glass", best by 07/01/10.

Beer a yellow several shades darker than most lagers. I didn't rouse much head on my pour but it was a bit on the gentle side. What foam there is, is of purest white.

Leafy green hops and a sweet mustiness greet the nose. Sweet corny and pils malt.

Plenty of residual sweetness for a lager in the same corny and malty way. It has a good crisp quality and the finish is a combination of noble hops and peppery alcohol. The name of this game is balance between sweet malt, crisp yeast, and spice.

Crisp and a bit bubbly and could even be more so.

This sure goes down simply enough. I think that this is the weakest Boulevard seasonal of Nutcracker, Irish Ale, and this here maibock.

Clean golden-amber in color, with an attractive head of off-white carbonation. Lacing seems light.

Nose is toasty and bready, like an amber or lager.

Taste is sweetly malty, with a crispy orange/lemon citrus zing at the finish. The overall effect, though is sweet and malty, rather than hoppy. A decent brew, but not a favorite.

My neighbor loves the Boulevard Brewing Co...and I am the lucky recipient of the many tasty brews he has brought back with him from his travels. The Boss Tom is another fine output by this amazing brewer. The color was golden clear with white foam and decent carbonation. the nose was not much....grain mostly. The taste however was well balanced...not much grain coming to the forefront. Very smooth and drinkable. Abosolutely give this one a try.

A: Clear and dark golden hue with a minimal fizzy head that dissipates to nothing; lacing is nearly non-existent

S: Fairly subdued with mostly a toasty, biscuity malt presence; a subtle lemon and tea leaf hop undertone

T: Malty, toasty, and bready up front; a touch of citrus in the back end but mostly bread, toffee, caramel, and more bread

F: A bit thin but beer does cling to the roof of the mouth quite well and the beer ends with fairly decent feel throughout

O: This is a decent, easy drinking, bready bock; nothing phenomenal here but a nice lager nonetheless
