Notes/Commercial Description:
With roots in two of today's most popular brewing styles, 80-Acre Hoppy Wheat Beer is the result of careful cultivation by our brewers and cellarmen. Their efforts to craft a hybrid yielded a bumper crop of flavor; a delightfully distinctive ale with the aroma of an IPA and the refreshing taste of a wheat beer.

Pours out a nice lemony yellow with a one finger white head with decent retention. Smell is nice fruity orange with a little sweet malts in the background to balance things out fairly well. Taste is quite quite malty that reminds me of a little sweet syrup with a little Belgian yeast. Not too much but a tiny but of bananas. The hop bill is quite subdued but helps balance things out to some extent. This is a malt forward beer. Mouthfeel is slightly thick for the style due to carbonation. Overall not a bad beer but not a good one. It's just sort of OK. I like their Smokestack Series. Their normal beer is just a not that great.

To call it "hoppy wheat" in my mind means a decent hop bitterness, not just smell. Not in the case of Hoppy Wheat. At its core, this is a dry hopped wheat beer with an abundance of carbonation. That's not at all what I expected.

It pours with a brilliant golden color. Somewhat hazy. I like the bottle bits, so I gave it a swirl to dump the bottle conditioning yeast in. I've always done this with Boulevard's beers.

The initial smell is unmistakable hops. More piney and grassy than citrus, but a little of all.

Taste a bit confused. It's part wheat beer, part IPA, part hefe. There's some hefe inspired clove flavors, along with the anticipated wheat base. But the carbonation is excessive, harsh.

It finishes just the way it started. With a slight hops bitterness.

Overall, it's a overlayered, noisy beer. The complexity takes away from, rather than adds to the beer.

Served in nonic. Poured a cloudy straw yellow with about 1/2 inch of white head that low retention and lacing.

The aroma had a bright, lemony-citrus hop scent over a base of soft wheat. A slight bit of yeast also popped around the edges of the scent. This was one of those rare instances for me where the aroma was stronger than the taste. The grain was very muted, the hops a lot softer, and the yeast virtually unnoticeable across the tongue.

The body was nice, full, smooth, and with a clean finish. Drinkability was good, I'd maybe have a few at a cookout. Overall, a pleasant enough brew, not one that stands out, but probably a decent choice for refreshment. Worth trying if you see it.

Pours a three finger white head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Pale, almost clear amber color. Light-medium carbonation and light-medium bodied. Strong nose of pine hops, flavor is a balance of pine hops and caramel malt. Decent wheat. $2.19 for a 12oz bottle from Julio's Liquors Westborough, MA.
