Notes/Commercial Description:
With roots in two of today's most popular brewing styles, 80-Acre Hoppy Wheat Beer is the result of careful cultivation by our brewers and cellarmen. Their efforts to craft a hybrid yielded a bumper crop of flavor; a delightfully distinctive ale with the aroma of an IPA and the refreshing taste of a wheat beer.

Enjoyed out of a stubby brown bottle with a freshness date of March 2014, so plenty of time to spare. Poured into a standard 16 oz tumbler glass with the Sierra Nevada logo on the side. I've had this wonderful beer many times, but finally decided to write a full review for it.

Appearance - It's hard to describe the body of this beer as anything but liquid gold. It's that bright yellowy tone like how melted gold might be depicted in a cartoon. Bright and glowing, with some more muted hints of straw yellow and cloudy throughout. The way an American unfiltered wheat should look, imho. Atop the beautifully-toned body sits a two finger pillowy head of stark white. A slight shadow rests beneath the moderately dense head, like a Kansas thunderstorm rolling across the plains and shading the fields of wheat below. Lacing is visible but moderate, with bits of stickiness on the glass as I drink it down, but comes up short of full rings.

Smell - Bright citrus and grassy notes, with some fainter elements of floral as well as some distinct notes of lemon zest. But the hops are not the only story here. There is a nice softness, like fresh-baking bread, to the aroma that clearly comes from the predominant use of wheat in the grain bill. I like the fact that this "hoppy wheat" doesn't smell like just an IPA. It retains it's wheat beer roots.

Taste - The bright citrus from the aroma now comes through with more clarity, providing notes of lemon and starfruit. There is also the more herbal characteristics like lemongrass and rosemary. As with the aroma, the wheat is well-represented here, with notes of fresh-baked sourdough and even some whole wheat dinner rolls. The grain definitely provides the subtlety of clover honey sweetness--just enough to add a little depth to the beer.

Mouthfeel - Medium-to-light bodied and moderate-to-light carbonation, with a slightly sweet finish and a faintly chewy mouthfeel.

Overall, this is one of my favorite beers from Boulevard. It's so good that if they replaced their standard Wheat beer with this one, I wouldn't be the slightest bit upset (although I speculate that there are others who would be...). In terms of comparison to other "hoppy" wheat beers, this one holds it's own just fine, and unlike some others, this one manages to remain a wheat beer with hops, rather than tasting like an IPA with some wheat in the grain bill.

This one is a great alternative to Lil sumpin sumpin or Gumballhead.

Great nose for starters, lacing holds up nicely and there is a good medium mouthfeel. Probably one of my favorite year round regular rotation Boulevard offerings. Pick this up and give it a try.

Golden color with a blonde head
Aroma: Big hop aroma up front.
Flavor: This is full bodied hopped flavor, finishing slightly citrus and smooth.
Overall: This is a well balanced beer. It has lots of hoppy flavor, but not overly bitter. The wheat base renders the beer very smooth. This is a very good wheat pale ale.

Pours slightly hazy straw golden in color with a one and a half finger foamy head that has good retention.

Smell has some orange/grapefruit rind hop aromas forward before a moderate wheat aroma cuts the center along with some light grainy aromas.

Taste follows the nose. Some bright citrus flavors are on the front end with hints of orange and lemon zest. Low bitterness is very nice and works well with the moderate wheat and light grainy flavors that follow.

Mouthfeel is good. Light to medium body with moderate carbonation. Crisp and refreshing.
