With roots in two of today's most popular brewing styles, 80-Acre Hoppy Wheat Beer is the result of careful cultivation by our brewers and cellarmen. Their efforts to craft a hybrid yielded a bumper crop of flavor; a delightfully distinctive ale with the aroma of an IPA and the refreshing taste of a wheat beer.

Pours a very golden straw color with some foamy white head. Smell is pretty sweet, with a lot of wheat and malt aroma and a touch of hops. Taste is almost all wheat beer. Not bad at all, but not really any hop flavor. 3 or 4 years ago I would have absolutely loved this beer. It is just missing that kick that Sumpin' Sumpin' and Gumballhead have. Don't get me wrong. Still a very good beer and I will drink the 6 I have happily. However, if you are looking for a true "hoppy wheat" try one of the others. If you are looking for something more balanced, or even tipping the scale the other way, I would recommend this for sure. (627 characters)

look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: straw yellow to a golden yellow color. huge 2-3 finger foamy white head that fades a little too quickly but leaves a nice strong lacing behind. completely cloudy and opaque.

Smell: very sweet wheaty smell, a touch of bubblegum, the smell is quite hoppy, lots of citrus, some earthiness and a little pine.

Taste: opens up with lots of initial sweetness, lots from wheat, some caramel malts and some bubblegum. Hops come in at the end but are completely overwhelmed by the sweet malts. some citrus, earth and pine again.

Mouthfeel: nice and light, not quite as refreshing as i'd like do to the overpowering sweetness

Overall: the hoppiness worked very well in the aroma, but falls off just a little too much in the taste. If that balance worked out this would be a very nice wheat beer. (800 characters)

Bottle brought home from Maryland by my girlfriend. Thanks Jola!

Pours a hazy golden yellow/orange, with a small half inch head that fades away quickly, and a little bit of lacing.

Smells like wheat, and juicy citrusy hops- orange, pineapple, and a little bit of grapefruit.

Tastes similar. Some wheat and yeast bitterness, followed by juicy and fruity hop flavor- grapefruit, oranges, lemons, and finishes with some more yeast bitterness, along with some piney and grassy bitterness. This one's about 4 months old, so maybe the hops are faded, but they taste pretty good to me right now.

Light bodied, but full for a wheat. Crisp, biting mouthfeel, nice bitterness that lingers from many sides- hops, wheat, yeast, etc. Very drinkable, high carbonation.

This was pretty good, one of the better wheat beers I've had. Helps that it was hopped up, of course. (862 characters)

12 fluid ounce bottle.
“Best by” date of 07/10/2014

Hazy gold body with a reasonable amount of carbonation flowing throughout. A modest white head folded and left a traceable amount of foamy lacing.

Plenty of hops present in the nose. Fresh notes of citrus. Very subtle grainy notes from the malts.

Citrusy hops hit the tongue first: lemon peel and grapefruit to be exact. Sweet grainy notes balance out the hops: sweet rolls and general grains are the most prominent flavours the malts present.

Light-Medium body. Appropriate carbonation for the style.

Overall: A very complete wheat ale. Hop-forward with a satisfying grainy finish. Recommended. (658 characters)

S: Lemon and light citrus. Grassy funk and yeast esters.

T: Refreshing citrus. Lemon and orange peel. Biscuits.

M: Light and crisp.

O: Refreshing brew that makes for a nice summer beer. (278 characters)

look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Appearance: Typical hazy looks are present in this beer. There is no lacing left on the glass when you drink it, and there is a quarter finger of head which had excellent retention. The color did look a little bit pissy, but that may have just been poor lighting.

Smell: Overwhelmingly citrus almost to a point of too much (but not too much). I pick up lots of orange peel and mango. A little bitter hop smell is there, but not the dominant smell for sure. The smells seem to be just the citrus which disappoints me because I was looking for more scents to be happening.

Taste: This brew is super sweet and tasty. I did not get the awful metallic flavors that usually come along with wheat ales and I did not get the rough bitterness that comes along with hoppy beers. This thing was in a category all by itself. There was even a bit of a sour finish which totally got me psyched. The taste was balanced, strong, and had enough going on to keep me interested throughout the entire glass.

Mouthfeel: Crisp and clean due to the light body and moderate carbonation. Great for the beer that was given.

OverallL A fantastic beer that really caught me by surprise. I am definitely going to recommend to others who can;t seem to find a hoppy beer that they like. (1,259 characters)

Good beer although it looks slightly like a urine specimen. This is overall a good beer with some citrus-lemon overtones and a slight nice hoppy touch. I could drink this in the summer more than any other season. A good effort but should be adapted to be a year round favorite (276 characters)

A- poured out of a bottle, this beer pours a fairly think inch or two head that subsides after a couple minutes. It has an unfiltered spring lemon yellow look to it. OR you can say it looks like a cold glass of think piss. Less intriguing when you look at it that way, though.

Smell- slightly sweet overtones with a mainly citrus smell to it. I think lemons and grapefruit. Smell reminds me of what I would think to be a light bodied IPA- hoppy overtones.

Mouthfeel- crisp and fairly light bodied, with just the right amount of carbonation. It doesn't have a very strong wheat finish.

Overall- definitely a great beer overall. Easy to drink, has a solid ABV %, this would be a perfect beer for most outdoor occasions. I can see myself enjoying this on a day out fishing, going to the beach, camping, the list could go on. This beer feels like it would still be fairly good even after warming up a bit (happens to the best of us!) (932 characters)

Had this beer before but wanted to do a full review and se.e where it stacked up. Love the look of this beer, murky, nice head and even some sediment. The smell is great with the IPA citrus. Great flavor, it pops but is very smooth, very little bitter. Overall an outstanding beer that I hope to revisit many many times. (320 characters)

pours out a cloudy lemon yellow sun colour with a modest snow white head. wispy lace. orange peel aroma with wheat and malt notes. citrus and subtle spice in the taste department. a bit grainy, herbal and leafy, too. hopping for complimentary flavour with little residual bitterness. medium to slightly below medium body. smooth mouthfeel, with hints of chalkiness. outstanding drinkability.

overall another great wheat beer that has a complimentary hop profile. i sure hope i can find this during the warmer months because this screams summer quaffer for sure. this is a hybrid style i can behind. the best of both worlds. recommended. (638 characters)

12 oz bottle poured into pint glass.

A: Poured more yellow than your average yellow wheat beer... little orange mixed in. Good fingers worth of head that settles to a thin layer with really good lacing from start to finish.

S: I'm getting the regular wheat notes.... wheat, little yeast, citrus then the hops kicks in.... pretty strong floral notes.

T: Really complex mix of flavors here... I'm getting the wheat stuff upfront, nice sweet wheat with a mix of citrus, then the hops kicks in really balancing out the wheat beer side. Finish is clean with no real bitter notes.

M: Crisp, clean and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky. Not really wheat like.

O: Very tasty brew.... it mixes the two things I didn't think would go together. I was wrong, this really works. Worth looking for. (827 characters)

This is a very good go to beer. Poured into weiss glass from bottle. Cloudy yellow color, white foamy head. Lemon on the nose, good acidity in the mouth. One of my favorite hoppy wheats; I will drink this anytime. I hate that everybody says its almost the same as GumballHead. Ok, its also a hoppy wheat beer and it has citrus flavors but lemons don't taste like oranges. Really enjoy drinking this beer. (404 characters)

On tap @ BBC Franklin, MA

Poured a cloudy straw yellow with a thin white head, lots of carbonation bubbles running throughout.

The smell is slightly piney with a mineral quality and a touch of copper.

The flavor is a bit bland. It has light traces of fruity wheat and a light coppery flavor with just a touch of juniper bitterness. I find the coppery tin like flavor to be a bit distracting.

The mouthfeel has a nice light creamyness to it.

Overall not a bad wheat, just a bit to bland and a touch flawed to me. (516 characters)

A very good Pale Wheat Ale. Appearance is outstanding. Huge white head with excellent retention and thick lacing. Nice straw gold color like a Hefe.

Smell is pretty good too. Lemon and Wheat bitterness

Taste is primarily lemony, bready malt and a little wheat bitterness up front, and an unexpected grassy hops in the finish.

Mouthfeel is crisp and. for this style, rich. So many Pale Wheat Ales are a bit watery, this one has some depth.

Good one!! And light enough to be sessionable. (489 characters)

Poured from a bottle into a shaker. Creamy white head, nice lacing. Sun gold, hazy straw yellow...visually pleasing.

A large hit of lemon on the nose followed by yeasty bread.

As with the smell the first sip...a bubbly carbonation of sour lemon. A bready, yeasty piece of honey toast in the middle...grassy, green, vegetable...A dry quick finish...bitter lemon butter, creamy and clean. The lemon lingers for quite awhile.

I like wheat beers and I like Hops...this is very good...maybe a little to much lemon and not enough hops...still, very good and very unique...enjoy. (575 characters)

I can't get over how this beer has the perfect blend of hops in my opinion. Every time I have a bottle it shocks how everything in 80 Acre balances so well together. I'm jonesing for another red tractor six pack while writing this. Created my account just to say this beer is kind of a big deal. (295 characters)

Pours a light gold/yellow with lots of white head that sticks to the glass.

Smell is very lemon like, with a malty, wheaty backbone giving it a good mix.

Taste is like a good hef with some pine and lemon, some grass, and pineapple. Also a nice wheat taste in there as well.

Feel is good, nice carbonation, and a light feel to it makes it quite the treat.

This is a very well balanced light beer. (398 characters)

12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a hazy pale yellow with a very fluffy two finger white head. Excellent head retention along with ok lacing.

The aroma is very fruity along with some bubblegum yeast esters. There is a really nice interplay between the fruit from the hops and the fruity from the yeast.

The flavor continues this hoppy/yeasty mixture although I feel like the yeast is a little more prominent than in the aroma. Bitterness is on the lighter side with a slightly watery mouthfeel.

Overall, a nice version of a lighter pale wheat ale. I would have liked to have had a little more in the way of hops but all in all, a nice refreshing and easy to drink beer. (684 characters)

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle stamped: 3205-1354-D-BEST BY 12/21/13. Sampled on January 19, 2014, which is about a month past that date.

It pours pale yellow with a cloudy obliqueness and a long lasting fizzy white head that embraces the side of the glass with its lacing and sticks around to the end.

The aroma is very inviting with its toasted biscuit malts, wheat, maybe some honey and a grassy sort of floral note.

Light to medium body and smooth texture.

As promised the biscuit malts and wheat are quickly overtaken by the hop presence that end clean and almost dry. A really nice brew even a month after I wasn't supposed to drink it! (651 characters)

Poured from a bottle with a best by date of 5/4/14, into a pint glass.
Appearance - golden, nice carbonation, looks refreshing! Big, fluffy white head, leaves plenty of lacing.
Smell - nice, but falls short of others like Lagunitas Lil Sumpin'.
Taste - very refreshing hop forward wheat ale!
Feel - not as hoppy as Lil Sumpin', but a good beer nontheless!
Overall - solid beer and for the price, worth a look. (410 characters)

Enjoyed out of a stubby brown bottle with a freshness date of March 2014, so plenty of time to spare. Poured into a standard 16 oz tumbler glass with the Sierra Nevada logo on the side. I've had this wonderful beer many times, but finally decided to write a full review for it.

Appearance - It's hard to describe the body of this beer as anything but liquid gold. It's that bright yellowy tone like how melted gold might be depicted in a cartoon. Bright and glowing, with some more muted hints of straw yellow and cloudy throughout. The way an American unfiltered wheat should look, imho. Atop the beautifully-toned body sits a two finger pillowy head of stark white. A slight shadow rests beneath the moderately dense head, like a Kansas thunderstorm rolling across the plains and shading the fields of wheat below. Lacing is visible but moderate, with bits of stickiness on the glass as I drink it down, but comes up short of full rings.

Smell - Bright citrus and grassy notes, with some fainter elements of floral as well as some distinct notes of lemon zest. But the hops are not the only story here. There is a nice softness, like fresh-baking bread, to the aroma that clearly comes from the predominant use of wheat in the grain bill. I like the fact that this "hoppy wheat" doesn't smell like just an IPA. It retains it's wheat beer roots.

Taste - The bright citrus from the aroma now comes through with more clarity, providing notes of lemon and starfruit. There is also the more herbal characteristics like lemongrass and rosemary. As with the aroma, the wheat is well-represented here, with notes of fresh-baked sourdough and even some whole wheat dinner rolls. The grain definitely provides the subtlety of clover honey sweetness--just enough to add a little depth to the beer.

Mouthfeel - Medium-to-light bodied and moderate-to-light carbonation, with a slightly sweet finish and a faintly chewy mouthfeel.

Overall, this is one of my favorite beers from Boulevard. It's so good that if they replaced their standard Wheat beer with this one, I wouldn't be the slightest bit upset (although I speculate that there are others who would be...). In terms of comparison to other "hoppy" wheat beers, this one holds it's own just fine, and unlike some others, this one manages to remain a wheat beer with hops, rather than tasting like an IPA with some wheat in the grain bill. (2,387 characters)

This one is a great alternative to Lil sumpin sumpin or Gumballhead.

Great nose for starters, lacing holds up nicely and there is a good medium mouthfeel. Probably one of my favorite year round regular rotation Boulevard offerings. Pick this up and give it a try. (264 characters)

Golden color with a blonde head
Aroma: Big hop aroma up front.
Flavor: This is full bodied hopped flavor, finishing slightly citrus and smooth.
Overall: This is a well balanced beer. It has lots of hoppy flavor, but not overly bitter. The wheat base renders the beer very smooth. This is a very good wheat pale ale. (315 characters)
