25.4oz bottle, Bruery tulip, best by September, 2011.
The color is a murky amber, not unlike an IPA, and the head is fantastic. All that foam is tight, creamy, khaki and is sticking breathtakingly to the glass.
I'm not getting a bold chocolate bar aroma, rather sweet cocoa powder with a big earthiness. Warmer, there is a presence of 85% or darker chocolate and a little boozy warmth. It smells a bit like chocolate chip cookies.
Earthy, nutty, bitter, creamy dark chocolate is the most obvious flavor. A bit of fruitiness and herbal hopping play around with more cookie maltiness. A higher level bitterness lays down on the tongue; it mimics that of chocolate.
Mouthfeel is little thin, thin but bitter. Tickling but restrained carbonation works well.
I'd really like to see this be more like 6% abv. It's not that the alcohol hurts the flavor or aroma, but that it doesn't at all add and is unnecessary. This is a well crafted beer, but I have a hard time believing that anybody is going to drink this more than once, twice at the most.
