Notes/Commercial Description:
Dubbel is a beer style developed by Belgian Trappists in the Middle Ages, part of a naming convention that also includes the lighter single and stronger trippel. All well and good, you say, but what's this “Nommo” business? Well, the Nommo are ancestral spirits worshipped by the Dogon tribe of the West African nation of Mali. The name is derived from a Dogon word meaning “to make one drink.” No, really. Nommo usually described as amphibious, hermaphroditic, fish-like creatures, were created by the sky god Amma, who caused them to multiply by splitting them into doubled sets of twins. Seeing a trend here? Maybe it's farfetched, but we think the story of the Nommo makes this whole enterprise a little more fun and interesting.

750ml brown bottle with a batch # and freshness date.

LOOK: Heady beginnings, dark mahogany hue.

SMELL: Molasses cookies, brown bread, carob powder, alcohol soaked raisins, taffy, faint medicinal herb.

TASTE: Very smooth, brown malt, deep toasted grain, burnt sugar, cooked raisins, licorice root, faint charcoal, warming alcohol, cotton candy, modest hopping, dry faintly roasted finish.

Word of warning, make sure you are drinking this beer at cellar temp. Anything colder does not do it justice. Hugely complex, a sipper and a real treat to have. After being in Belgium for a week recently this brew really brings me back.

This pours dark mahogany, nice light tan fizz, maybe a bit over-excited but not outrageous. There are floaties suspended in the beverage, but I like that.

Smell is sweet, candy sugar, ripe cherries - very nice and light.

Taste is refreshing. Spicy. Cinnamon. rasins. more dark cherries. There is some hop cleanup on the finish, but it is not at all "hoppy".

Mouthfeel is nice and creamy, and stays fizzy as it warms slightly. It is very nice.

The body is a bit heavier than other dubbles.

I really like this. it's a great overall beverage. I like everything in this brewery's Smokestack series, and this is rolling right up there with the best.
