Picked up as part of a mixed 12 sample-pack, BBD 01/06/14

Pours a super-effervescent copper/brown with 1 finger of khaki colored head. Good lacing & above average head retention

S: Faint pepper, brown bread & leafy hop notes

T: Some pepper notes, a bit of brown bread sweetness, & not much else up front. Dryness & some pepperiness as this warms, slight toastyness as well. Finishes dry, peppery with a little bit of leafy hops

MF: Kind of thin, slight carbonation, picks up as this warms

A run of the mill rye beer, nothing to see here...

A warm amber-brown, sticky khaki head that throws some nice lace. Peppery spicy rye is front and center. Other malt derived flavors include burnt toast, toffee, and biscuit. Hops are mild with a dirty herbal note that meshes with the rustic rye. Overall, some decent flavors going on, but it seems a bit diluted and even watery at times given the high percentage of rye. It just needs a little more. If you are going for something malt driven - give me a little more body. If you are going for dryness and drinkability - give me a little more in the way of hops.

I poured a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance- Hazy amber-brown color with a finger and a half worth of head. Fair amount of lacing.

Smell- Rye spiciness, caramel, and some nuttiness.

Taste- There is some spiciness and a slight sourness from the rye with notes of caramel malt and nuts.

Mouthfeel- On the heavy end of light bodied with an average amount of carbonation. Smooth with a dry finish.

Overall- A good offering from Boulevard. This beer should become a regular in their lineup.

Dark copper brown in color. Fingernail thin layer of foam rests upon the top. Good clarity. I definitely get the spiciness of the rye in the nose. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth. The front of the palate is definitely the rye, but it is quickly balanced with some hop flavor. Pretty straight forward, but a pretty good brew.

I was very excited to try this "Tasting Room" beer given I had enjoyed some of their other tasting room-to-distribution beers before, but this one left me quite dissatisfied. Quite surprised this was one they selected to send out in the sample packs.

While the appearance of a red ale is actually appealing, the aroma is mostly subdued. Wisps of grain and some esters, but nothing much more to speak of. No hops indicated.

Dry, grainy, earthy characteristics that just don't seem to mesh well in this intensely malted rye. I get it...they have hightlighted the rye here, but just seems a little too in your face. Caramel and nuts shows up for a bit, but overall, quite lifeless. Not buying that this one brings any spice to speak of.

The mouthfeel was probably the best quality of this beer. No bitterness (probably because of the lack of IBU level) makes for moderate drinkability. Mid body, light carbonation.

I try not to bust the balls of any brewery on here, but I couldn't bite my tongue on this one. I have really come to love Boulevard's Smoke Stack Series and could care less for their year round for the most part. This one certainly doesn't belong in the former (or neither, hopefully). Kinda sad that the variety pack came with three of these.
