Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Boulevard's Love Child Series of "wild" ales are barrel-aged with such boisterous cultures as Lactobaccillus and Brettanomyces. These wayward offspring can prove so complex that we employ gauges on the label to convey the intensity of three key personality traits, Funk, Sour, and Fruit, presenting a picture of the ale at the time it was released. It will change as it ages, but don't we all?

Sour characteristics come to the fore in this release, foreshadowed by the tart, winey aroma. Notes of cherry, chocolate, olive brine, and leather give way to a subtle hint of funk and a dry, clean finish.

Sample: 1 bottle 2012

A: Dark orange in color, quite cloudy throughout, pours a small white head which quickly dissolves into minimal lacing, not translucent

S: Strong citrus fruit and acid on the nose, some floral and herbal elements are faintly present, touch of oak

T: Perfectly sour, fruity and refreshing, definitely some herbal elements at the finish, rather difficult to describe, but flavorful

M: Just the right amount of sour, not heavy in the mouth, only a touch of alcohol even with the high abv, not lingering, but a bit drying and an unusual aftertaste

O: A nice example of the style, very pleasant tasting, despite the aftertaste, definitely worth trying

First pour in a Love Child No. 2-4 vertical. Opened about 4 months past the stamped 03/2014 "enjoy by" date.
Flanders red in appearance.
Slight funkiness in the aroma with the bourbon barrel characteristics standing out more.
A crisp tartness upfront. Finish was mostly the bourbon barrels with little-no fruitiness and very little sour. The aftertaste was the same. The sour/funk characteristics were not as prominent as I thought it would be. Might have been due to age especially when compared to Love Child No. 3.

Still a great and enjoyable beer. Really liked being able to pick out the differences in all three of the vertical.

Bottled 2-2012

Aroma: tart cherries and strawberries. Clean funk.

Appearance: ruby cherry color. Beautiful. Head falls immediately.

Taste: starts medium tart with a bit of funk and finishes with prominent plum and cherry skin flavors. Hard to pick out malt flavors.

Mouthfeel: puckering and dry. No dms, very light diacetyl.

Overall: great beers that loses some of its ripe fruit characteristics with age but is almost more complex now.

Bottle: Poured an orangey/amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and almost no lacing. Aroma consists of sour tart notes are quite dominant with light subtle notes of bourbon also noticeable. Taste is also dominated by tart and sour notes with light acidic notes with a finish that is closer to Chardonnay then bourbon actually. Body is about average with medium carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Enjoyable and well brewed top style without rewriting the rule book.
