Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Boulevard's Love Child Series of "wild" ales are barrel-aged with such boisterous cultures as Lactobaccillus and Brettanomyces. These wayward offspring can prove so complex that we employ gauges on the label to convey the intensity of three key personality traits, Funk, Sour, and Fruit, presenting a picture of the ale at the time it was released. It will change as it ages, but don't we all?

Sour characteristics come to the fore in this release, foreshadowed by the tart, winey aroma. Notes of cherry, chocolate, olive brine, and leather give way to a subtle hint of funk and a dry, clean finish.

750mL bottle served into a Boulevard chalice

Pours a murky brown color. It looks like the color of a cinnamon stick. The head was more of a suggestion; only 1/4 of a finger's worth of offwhite foam formed and fizzled on top.

The aroma is pretty subdued for a wild ale. It smells mostly like a Flanders Red: juicy bursts of red fruit and a malt note that reminds me of brown sugar. You pick up on tartness but the funk level on this beer is slight.

The flavors that Love Child No. 2 brings, however, are tremendous. Right up front you get a fresh squeeze of lemon juice, along with a pleasant apple cider character. There's some brown sugar (more like a sugar cookie/snickerdoodle?) malt note. Lots of red grape character here; this is a vinous beer and I the tannins (which come from the oak Bourbon barrels) have me thinking wine all the way. Towards the finish I pick up on some stewed pear, pomegranate juice, and a light musty basement kind of funk.

A medium body provides a nice heft while still letting the carbonation do its necessary, prickly work. It's dryer and astringent, as it should be. Overall, this is a fantastic sour beer. It's like a smoother, more refined version of Goose Island's Dominique one-off.

First pour in a Love Child No. 2-4 vertical. Opened about 4 months past the stamped 03/2014 "enjoy by" date.
Flanders red in appearance.
Slight funkiness in the aroma with the bourbon barrel characteristics standing out more.
A crisp tartness upfront. Finish was mostly the bourbon barrels with little-no fruitiness and very little sour. The aftertaste was the same. The sour/funk characteristics were not as prominent as I thought it would be. Might have been due to age especially when compared to Love Child No. 3.

Still a great and enjoyable beer. Really liked being able to pick out the differences in all three of the vertical.

Bottled 2-2012

Aroma: tart cherries and strawberries. Clean funk.

Appearance: ruby cherry color. Beautiful. Head falls immediately.

Taste: starts medium tart with a bit of funk and finishes with prominent plum and cherry skin flavors. Hard to pick out malt flavors.

Mouthfeel: puckering and dry. No dms, very light diacetyl.

Overall: great beers that loses some of its ripe fruit characteristics with age but is almost more complex now.

Bottle: Poured an orangey/amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and almost no lacing. Aroma consists of sour tart notes are quite dominant with light subtle notes of bourbon also noticeable. Taste is also dominated by tart and sour notes with light acidic notes with a finish that is closer to Chardonnay then bourbon actually. Body is about average with medium carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Enjoyable and well brewed top style without rewriting the rule book.
