American Wild Ale |  9.60% ABV

Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Boulevard's Love Child Series of "wild" ales are barrel-aged with such boisterous cultures as Lactobaccillus and Brettanomyces. These wayward offspring can prove so complex that we employ gauges on the label to convey the intensity of three key personality traits, Funk, Sour, and Fruit, presenting a picture of the ale at the time it was released. It will change as it ages, but don't we all?

Sour characteristics come to the fore in this release, foreshadowed by the tart, winey aroma. Notes of cherry, chocolate, olive brine, and leather give way to a subtle hint of funk and a dry, clean finish.

Poured into a Chimay Chalice

Appearance: minimal head, hazy, dark red/brown in color, low carbonation

Smell: sour mix and light fruit

Taste: cherry, oak, sour mix, and light cranberry

Mouthfeel: sweet and sour, medium-light bodied, medium carbonation but very prickly

Overall: Great sour cherry taste that has complexity with other fruit flavors. Right up there with the best domestic sours. Sour but not mouth puckering and vinegary. A bit pricey, but if I wanted an american wild ale, this would be one I would turn to.

Bottled 2-2012

Aroma: tart cherries and strawberries. Clean funk.

Appearance: ruby cherry color. Beautiful. Head falls immediately.

Taste: starts medium tart with a bit of funk and finishes with prominent plum and cherry skin flavors. Hard to pick out malt flavors.

Mouthfeel: puckering and dry. No dms, very light diacetyl.

Overall: great beers that loses some of its ripe fruit characteristics with age but is almost more complex now.

Bottle: Poured an orangey/amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and almost no lacing. Aroma consists of sour tart notes are quite dominant with light subtle notes of bourbon also noticeable. Taste is also dominated by tart and sour notes with light acidic notes with a finish that is closer to Chardonnay then bourbon actually. Body is about average with medium carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Enjoyable and well brewed top style without rewriting the rule book.

Pours out a dark caramel color. Thin, tiny head. Smell is tart and funky with some caramel malts. No booze detected in the nose for such a high abv beer. I love the sourness of this beer, first off, along with the caramel malts. Issue is taken with the bourbon barrel aging, however. I feel the vanilla, oak, caramel, and chocolate flavors from the bourbon barrel aging just clash with the tartness. Finishes sweetish. Mouthfeel could use a lot more carbonation to brighten up the heavy bourbon and chocolate flavors. Overall, this is not a favorite of mine. too much bourbon character does not work with the tart and funky.

Love Child #2 is a very tasty concoction that offers sour cherry in lockstep with bourbon barrel notes. The BBA notes are a bit unconventional for the style, adding a oaky sweet note into the mix that works very well with the upfront sour cherry. All in all a tasty American wild.
