Batch #3, Bomber to a snifter

Pours dark brown, almost black with red hues. Very murky muddy brown when held up to a light. A half finger of foam has died down to a thin ring pretty quickly, mild carbonation from the sides, think lacing 4/5

Smells pretty complex. Upfront dark notes, dusty chocolate, raisin, fig, cherry, oak, white wine, bourbon, some funk and a little alcohol. Everything comes together well, really interesting beer. Smells like a mix between a bb stout and a wine barrel Belgian 4.25/5

Taste is a bit of a curve ball. Lots of fig, raisin, chocolate, and molasses in the front. After that is a tart dark berry, followed by some oak- nice mix of mostly wine with strong hints of bourbon. Ends with a touch of alcohol 4.25/5

Feel is a moderate body, actually really smooth on the way down. Moderately tart, nothing close to sour. Alcohol is hidden well, it's really easy to drink 4.25

Overall it's different, but good. I know it's classified as a wild ale, but I still have no idea what sort of beer I just drank. More like a BA strong ale. It's really good though 4.25/5

The deep burgundy colored body was not highly carbonated, and the one finger thick head was short lived. The smell was very wine like, with sour, fruity, woody aromas dominating the nose, and this was backed by a rose like floral aromas. The taste was that of raisins up front, with a followup of cherry. There were some hints of chocolate and toffee in the finish. The aftertaste was oak, vanilla, and a touch of banana. The body of the beer was a little thin and the feel slick. A nice creation, but a bit pricey for the quality.

Appearance: dark brown in color, 1.5 inch head, high carbonation, cloudy

Smell: chocolate and oak

Taste: oak, hazelnut, toasted malt, sweet chocolate and bourbon--especially at the end

Mouthfeel: moderate carbonation, heavy body, sweet with oakiness that gives a slight bittering

Overall: A nice malty and oaky treat. Really loving the complexity on this. Would not have thought of it as an American Wild, but it is delicious. Very subtle flavors that mix well. I will get this again.

Deep dark brown in color and minimal light will get through this brew. Carbonation is very high and thick with a brown tint to it. The aroma is loaded with whiskey, dark carmelized malt and a bit of molasses. The mouthfeel is a bit thick and rich,as this is a bit weighted with alcohol. The taste is actually a bit subdued in light of everything else. It is very forward with caramel and gentle sweetness of fig. the back of the palate is a bit of a warming sensation as the whiskey trickles down your throat.

Pours brilliant chestnut under a 3” pillowy lightly tan tinted foam cap that leaves clumpy lace. A spicy nose with a hint of anise, a touch of roast, faint vanilla and bourbon. It pours creamy and drier than the nose might suggest with dark kettle sugars, a hint of horehound, cola, and anise that culminate in a dry roasty bitter finish. Some astringency on the finish from the grain or maybe the hops is not altogether pleasant. Medium to medium high carbonation and medium full body.

Complex yet very clean and simple. Reminds me of the FFF/New Belgium Gratzer if it were barrel aged, but with a little more everything on it...especially the nose of a sour. I savored this beer as it slowly warmed up to discover nice depth on most of the character notes. Would love to see this happen again.

As promised, this has a wild ale aroma and flavor; not always a good thing for my tastes.

It starts promising with an excellent presentation: essentially black body covered by a semi-durable head that leaves good lacing.

Has a distinct, and to me unpleasant, aroma of Brett.

Some Brett in the flavor too.along with medium roasted malts, yeast, and hints of dark fruit.

A- This beer pours a thick, 3/4 of a glass, head of dense foam that settles down to a dark brown body and there is still thick lacing with each sip.

S- The earthy tart wet wood that takes on a pencil shavings note before becoming more dry old oak as it opens. There is a nice hint of Flanders Red yeast esters with cherry hints and basement hues.

T- The nice dark fruit tartness leads to a bit more funk character and some old barrel notes to follow. The white cheese rind brett taste and some earthy darker malt notes blend with wet oak in the finish.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a full roundness from the gentle fizz and no real alcohol heat or astringency noticed.

O- This beer has a great wild funk character blended with barrel notes and some good yeast esters and malt flavor for support. This is very drinkable.

2014 vintage poured from the 750mL bottle into a Belgian tulip.

There's an impressively creamy, dark-khaki head on this brew that I can't help but stare at. It recedes slowly and leaves streaks of lace before settling into a frothy layer over a pitch black liquid with a few trickles of carbonation. 4.1

For lack of better words, there's a pungent, semi-wine grape like aroma with some malt sweetness that I associate with a dubbel maybe. It's an oaken dark fruit smell perhaps. There's faint sweet malt there but it's hardly detectable. 3.6

Flavor-wise, there's a cross of wine-like yeast flavors and bourbon barrel oak and vanilla flavors. There's also some of the dark fruit from the nose that works it's way in, date being what it most resembles. As the beer warms, baker's chocolate becomes more noticeable on the finish. 3.9

The yeastiness and wine-like quality to this beer can be a bit much. It's pretty light-feeling in the body and highly effervescent. 3.7

This beer takes on new dimensions as it warms and becomes much more enjoyable. The initial tastes and the mouthfeel aren't quite what I like in a beer so that drags this beer down a bit. 3.78

Picked this up at Brown Derby in Springfield, MO

Opens with a giant pop & pours an effervescent ruby red with 4 fingers of mocha colored head. Above average lacing & good head retention

S: Sour cherry, a bit of funk & & wet hay

T: Follows the nose, some apricot, a touch of fig & dryness up front. Woody dryness, choke cherry, a smattering of booze heat & a whisper of carob & plum. Finishes with oaky dryness, cherry & grassy notes & some sour mash & modicum of vanilla rising to the top

MF: Medium bodied, slight carbonation & warmth

Drinks nicely, not super sour, but engaging enough I would like to be able to purchase this again & again. Was hoping for better, but was looking for a great beer. Close, maybe will age into it

Poured into a standard tulip glass.

Appearance: (3.75)
Pours an extremely dark, murky brown that is verging on pitch black. As soon as the beer hits the glass, a towering 4 fingers tall, tight bubbled, light beige head erupts out of the dark beer. The head has good retention and leaves some nice lace along the edges of the glass.

Aroma: (4)
If the gigantic, frothing head didn't make you think this beer was bottle conditioned with Brettanomyces, the aromatics certainly will! Layers and layers of Brett funk shoot out of the glass towards your nose; Musty hay, wet earth, horse blankets, old leather and even a hint of pineapple and lemon juice. A spicy, herbal and slightly citrus-y hop presence is deep entrenched inside the wild yeast. Underneath the mountain of funk, there are notes of bakers chocolate, freshly grated cocoa and a faint espresso. As beer starts to warm, the bourbon barrel finally starts to rear it's head, but it is very subdued; a mere kiss of vanilla and extremely light notes of coconut.

Taste: (3.75)
Your palate is greeted by a quick, juicy charge of very citrus forward hops; Orange, grapefruit and some nice, resinous pine. Playing counterpoint to the bright hops, the Brett eases in nicely with it's earthen notes of leather, wet hay and a tangy pineapple zest. The middle of the taste is very light with notes of dark chocolate and lightly roasted coffee. The beer finishes bitter and dry with long lingering notes of pine needles, light citrus, earthy Brettanomyces funk and some nice chalky bakers chocolate. Some notes of the bourbon barrel in the finish; coconut, vanilla and a light booziness. Very little tannins.

Mouthfeel: (3.5)
Light to medium bodied with moderate to high carbonation. I find myself wanting a more viscous body.

Overall: (3.75)
A very interesting collaboration indeed between Sierra Nevada and Boulevard Brewing; You can definitely taste a distinct earthiness to this brew. While the nose and taste of this beer is certainly complex and ever evolving in your glass, the thin mouthfeel really brings this beer down a few notches. I wish there was a just a bigger, thicker malt presence. I really enjoy the dry hopping twist that seems to be a nod to Orval. The hops really do add a nice citrus-y character to the beer that helps brighten up the flavor profile. This is a really complex beer certainly not for novice. I can only recommend this beer in good conscience to the already Brettanomyces obsessed.

Either this was a bad bottle or I waited too long to open it but this was the worst beer I've tried in recent memory.
Overly carbonated with large bubbles reminiscent of my early homebrew experiments.
The smell is harsh graininess, RC Cola, slight funk from the brett and some smokey, burnt tire-like aroma.
Taste follows the nose very closely with an awful bitterness thrown in on the back end which makes me gag slightly. Overwhelming brett and funk. Tastes like burning. Terrible.
The mouthfeel is effervescent like a sparkling water which whisks away this elixir from my palate.
Overall, this was awful. Like I mentioned, maybe this was just a bad bottle as others seem to rate it reasonably well or I possibly let it sit too long (just nigh over three years) and the brett went nuts and destroyed what was a decent beer.
Shame. A rare drain-pour for me.

Pours a dark brown, almost cola like color. Short dense tan head that settles into a light ring.

The aroma is of a brown bread malt. Some caramel and vanilla notes provide extra sweetness. Perhaps a hint of bourbon. The wine barrel and yeast add a tart edge to the aroma and a fruit grape note. Some sugary sweetness. Its interesting to say the least. Kind of works.

The taste is quite bizarre. The barrels seem to contrast and produce an odd herbal flavor. The flavor starts off bready, some toast. This quickly is over-taken by both barrels, at the same time. The bourbon fights with the wine barrel, which produces a vanilla tart grape. Not sure vanilla and grape should go together. The beer has a nice caramel backbone. The base beer is pretty nice, a bit of a Belgian thing going. Some clove, plum and licorice. I dunno a bit too much going on.

Moderate feel with fizzy carbonation. Clean on the palate, perhaps a touch sweet. The abv is well hidden. Drinks well.

Not sure the combination of barrels worked well with this beer. It contrasts too much and produces an odd flavor.

Even poured very cold and carefully, this is a foaming beast. Estimate the glass fills about 1/4 liquid and 3/4 foamy head. Of course it takes forever to settle. Annoying. Dark brown color with heavy lacing is left down the glass.

I like this aroma. I pick up some fruity tartness, whiskey, caramel, and herbal, earthy hops. Pleasant amount of barrel character without it overwhelming the other aromas.

The flavor is not as impressive. Very earthy and woody. Mild tartness and acidity. Booze flavor with moderate heat in the finish. The malt does not come through very well. I just get a little caramel sweetness.

Over carbonated and the body feels thin. Definitely not like a 8% ABV beer.

A big disappointment. Just not very well crafted and these two breweries definitely know better.

S: Some brett-like esters, grassy, some wood bark, faint fennel

L: Very dark brown, big, bubbly light tan head with good retention and lacing.

T: Herbal like malt with hints of black tea and fennel. Tea-like medium bitterness leading to some sharp fruitiness. Some young oak in the finish as well, cherrywood in addition. Very slight and ashy. Opens up a lot, more brett as it warms.

M: Medium high carbonation, medium bodied

Interesting, never had a beer quite like this. Like a dark saison with Brett.

O I'm not a wild ale expert, but this is fairly good and very different. The funk hits first, followed by a BSDA presence and finishes way way whiskey. A commendable challenge to the ordinary palate and approachable. Not a super funk like GI Juliet, and probably pretty tame for the Wild Beer Advocate. Very overcarbonated, took 5-6 minutes for foam to dissipate. Smells of chlorophenols, highly carbonated on the tongue. There may be a little malt in the taste but it's mostly dominated by phenols. Definitely an infected bottle

Bought on a whim to see what multiple aging techniques in blended form tasted like. This is batch # 3, 13% Ale, 55% Wine barrel aged, 32% bourbon barrel aged and 9.8% alcohol content. Pours dark, almost black but has reddish hues when held up to light. Medium pour from a 750 into a a flute, resulted in a two inch light brown head that lasted several minutes while leaving little to no lacing on the glass. Aroma like a Belgian Dubbel with vanilla, fruit, and bourbon prevailing. Allowing beer to warm to around 55-60 brought out much more of the flavor profile and like many bourbon barrel aged beers, raised the presence of the bourbon barrel aging, yet the tartness of wine barrel aging still lingers but not a strongly as if drank colder. Medium mouthfeel with carbs and alcohol bite.

Overall my personal opinion is this is a good strong ale, not sure about the wild category but still quite palatable and enjoyable. Although I can understand the blending may be off-putting to some, thus this beer seems to have a higher than usual deviation on ratings.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, best before 02-2015. Served in a tulip, the beer pours dark brown with a couple inch light tan head that sticks around for a very long time. There's also a lot of lacing. The brew smells like sweet and tart dark fruit, dark bread, oak, leather and some vanilla. It tastes like tart and sweet dark fruit (cherries, red grapes, plums, blackberries), oak/wood, brett, earth and a bit of vinegar. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it has high but soft carbonation so it's not hard to drink. I think Terra Incognita is a solid brew, and I'm glad I tried this. But at $21.99 a bottle, I'll pass the next time I see it.

A: Dark brown, root beer look. Pretty flat brown in color, not a lot too it. Just a tad cloudy.
S: Smells like Olives to me. Very sour.
T: Initially quite sour on the pallete, the barrel age definitely comes through here. You get a little bit of a smoky chocolate flavor after that, but the sourness is what prevails throughout the drink. You also get a little bit of bittering hop taste at the end.
M: Actually a fairly light mouthfeel for this dark of a beer. Definitely left with the sourness of the beer.
O: I wish there was more to it.. The barrel aging profile really doesn't come through a lot, and overall it is quite sour, which I wasn't really looking for from this beer.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into stemless wine glass and 2 small tulips. Very gentle hand. Best by 02/2015 printed on the label.

A: Essentially black with a very slight brownish tint that become apparent near the end of the glass. This is seriously dark. Billowy, towering 5 fingers of rocky light caramel-colored head. Iceberg of foam at 5 minutes. Marked lacing. Impressive.

S: Tartness, cherry. Nice funk notes that become more prominent as it warms. Certainly more sour on the nose than what comes across in the taste.

T: Mildly tart funkiness up front that fades quickly into barrel-aged, oaky, bourbon-type sweetness with some faint bitterness. Light mocha, chocolate notes. Some piney hop later. The bitterness builds over the course of the beer. Minimal alcohol presence given 8.5% ABV. I expected quite a bit more sour/tart element given the smell.

M: Moderately high carbonation. A bit prickly for the flavor profile. Admittedly, I think I handled the bottle a bit roughly prior to pouring, but the effervescence is excessive. Detractor.

O: This is a great looking, good smelling beer that is a bit of a let down once I get it in my mouth.
Parallels the Cuvee Freddy I had last week - similar progression of flavors. I think I like this one a bit better. Not as cloying. Interesting beer, but ends up being a bit schizophrenic. Lots of flavors, but lacks cohesion. I suspect a bit of age would help - think I'll pick up another bottle to cellar.

This is a collaboration between Boulevard and Sierra Nevada and comes in a 750ml corked bottle. Initially it took a while to see what this beer looked like, as even a gentle pour erupted into 3/4 of a glass full of foam. Eventually a very dark ale settled below the thick, dense head. It was almost stout like in its appearance. There were smoky malt notes in the aroma and almost an anise-like thing happening.

Sipping the Terra Incognita, I was somewhat surprised. I expected a heavier body, more sweetness, and much more carbonation (some of Boulevard's beers are quite carbonated imo) based on what I was seeing/smelling. But the malt/hops balance is nice with a touch of bitterness in the finish. Though it is dark and malty, it is slightly sour rather than sweet like a scotch ale or porter. It reminded me more of a Boulevard than a Sierra for sure. It is 8.5% and you get a sense of that when you drink it.

Overall it is an interesting dark ale. There are other Boulevards that I prefer but I did enjoy trying this new collab.

Pours dark mahogany with a big, foamy ivory head. Nice aromas of funky, earthy Brettanomyces, dark dried fruits, and some citrusy hops. Taste is similarly earthy, with more dry Brettanomyces, citrus peel hops, and sweet dark malt. Mouthfeel is smooth and dry, with a medium body and good carbonation. Really nice Wild Ale, glad I got to taste it!

A-Dark cherry brown with an impresssive, long lasting head. sticky lacing.

S-Cherry, clove, nutmeg.

T-Crisp tartness overflows with blackberry and cherry, finishes with strong whiskey notes from the barrel aging.

M-Pleasant carbonation pushes forward the fruit and whiskey.

O-Much better than I expected considering peer reviews. Not astonishing for the price but not bad either.

A: dark opaque brown, but essentially black at a glance; finger of light brown foam on top

S: rich brown malts and woodsy barrels supplemented with dim fruity notes, and suggestions of the wine and bourbon barrels used

T: incredible array of flavors - rich molasses sweetness weaves through the wine and bourbon highlights; brown and roasty malts converge, producing fruits like fig and date, and hearty breads; accents suggesting spices

M: medium-weight, smoothly gliding across the tongue; barrel vapors caress the roof; moderate carbonation; effortless drinking

O: this is the third brewing of the beer, and not having had the previous two, I can tell you that there is nothing wild about this beer - it is more reminiscent of a rich Imperial-style brown meets a strong dark Belgian ale (though the stylings are more "American" than "Belgian"), but it truly transcends styles. If you're expecting a wild ale, you may be wildly disappointed, but if you're bracing for a barrel-aged brown, you'll be more pleased. I was absolutely stunned by the ale, and highly recommend it. The reviews aren't so hot, but this may be reflective of the two previous vintages - and also the difficulty in categorization.
