Notes/Commercial Description:
Collaboration #3 Stingo was brewed using traditional English ingredients. A variety of ale and specialty malts from Yorkshire are at the forefront; their pronounced roasty aroma and flavor contain hints of toffee, cocoa and bread crust. English hop varieties contribute subtle herbal, peppery qualities. The beer was brewed in batches; some was fermented on oak, some was fermented normally, and some was allowed to sour in the mash tun before being transferred to a fermenter. Boulevard’s brewers, along with Dann and Martha Paquette of Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project, then blended the batches until desired levels of wood and tartness were achieved for the final product.

Appearance: Cloudy deep-brown, with a thick tan head.

Smell: Caramel and roasted malts on the nose, hops don't really come through

Taste: Beautiful. Rich and complex with caramel, nuts, leather, all that good stuff. It was slightly sweet but well balanced.

Mouthfeel: Very rich, low carbonation made it stick around awhile with a bit of alcoholic warmth.

Overall: A rare style wonderfully executed. I love this beer, and want to attempt a clone. Great for winter. Would go great with a rich stew.

Looks outstanding - dark chocolate brown beer sits beneath 2+ fingers of frothy creamy tan head. Looks solid, without being intimidating.

Yum - smells especially English. Dark fruits, sugar, yeasty bread. Like walking into a great restaurant, with smells hitting your nose independently and in waves.

Big fruits, singing through a malty breadiness and molasses, lingering in the mouth for minutes afterwards. Hoppiness follows woodsy, with grassiness and pine. I'm picking up just a hint of the tartness noted. Wow, that's good. Strong, but subtle.

Tingling on the tongue, not quite stinging as the name would imply, but close. Sticky to close, filling the back of the throat - figgy pudding, perhaps? Would pair well with a side of it, for sure.

Though not a favorite style of mine, this is an outstandingly good beer - I'm going to enjoy all of it. Should've bought a second.

The beer pours a dark brown leather like flavor with a half finger light tan head on top that leaves a sticky ring of lacing on the side and is reminiscent of the color of whip cream mixed with maple syrup. The beer is murky and very dark brown, allowing no light to get through. The beer smells wonderfully of roasted caramel and brown sugar with a nice alcoholic bite/burn in the back of the smell with a fresh crisp feeling in it that reminds one of carrots. This reminds me a lot of a Belgian quad in smell with the dark fruit replaced by caramel sugars and molasses and superb roasted malts. The beer tastes just as wonderfully complex as the smell. Roasted and caramel malts mingle wonderfully with brown sugar and a slight sour flavor that emanates in the aftertaste. The yeast esters are also pretty present with the sours and work with the sweet caramels terrifically, even in the aftertaste. The esters are reminiscent of pears and peaches and help to add yet another complex layer to this beer’s flavor. Mouthfeel is effervescent and prickly but caramely and smooth, leaving the mouth quite clean with just a slight pucker from the sour, and a little glassing of saliva on the sides of the tongue. The top of the tongue is actually a little dry in feeling and is begging for more. Overall this is a tremendous beer with a lot of complex flavors and smells. It’s got the caramely roasted beauty of a porter and the fancy esters of a Belgian. If you find this beer, buy it and drink it. Drink all of it. Thank me later.

750mL bottle served into a tulip glass

Pours a ruddy looking reddish brown color, like ruby red splashed with mud. It's not so dark that you can't see through it. Two fingers of tight, light tan head (with a hint of pink in it). It dissipates to 1/4 of a finger after a few minutes, but the lacing is real nice. As most Smokestack Series beers are, this looks fantastic.

The aroma, however, is not. There's a dominant note of cardboard or wood shavings. It's like paper treated with plastic or something. Underneath that you can tell there's some interesting malt dynamics going on. Deep toasted breadcrust aromas meet a sort of light butterscotch component. There's some rose hips in here (a floral note for sure; rose hips is just what my mind associated). A healthy degree of coffee bean aroma opens up as the beer warms. Too bad for that heavy cardboardy note.

That cardboard/wood shavings note is entirely absent on the palate, thankfully. The dynamics of the malt flavors and English yeast here are quite complex. Breadcrusts and toffee and banana bread and stewed pear and rosewater and coffee beans and alcohol heat and underneath it all is some TART pear/apple. Man, that subtle tartness is refreshing. Part of the blend of this beer was allowed to sour, so this tart note is here as a result. It helps to break up the heavy coffee-and-dark-bread malt flavors. Another review here intimated that this beer, while complex, is somewhat disjointed. I must disagree. This tastes like an English Strong Ale for sure. It's coherent at every step; the tart note makes so much sense in this beer.

This bottle is perhaps a touch overcarbonated. This isn't very "stingy" with alcohol, not really, but that feeling is amplified because of the active carbonation. But I'm nitpicking. The body itself has a great feel and carries the flavors well; any thicker and this could get to be a bit much.

Overall, I find this to be a tremendous English Strong Ale. It's deeply complex and delicious. This is a smashing success.

This is a misunderstood and underestimated beer. It's a great beer served at 55 F( 12.8C).

The first time I had this beer was at the Independent in Somerville- way too cold, and the result was a tart, unbalanced beer.

Fast forward 3 or more months. I served it at the correct serving temp in a tulip.

Nice caramel color. 1/2 finger head. Fruit aroma-dates, raisins or pomegrantes?
Mouthfeel very smooth. Noticeably tart on the tongue in the finish.

Taste- fruit- as the beer warms more lemony.

Overall- excellent beer served warm in a tulip.

Served on tap in a tulip glass. The beer has an attractive dark brown, dense appearance that still lets some light through, with a frothy tan head. There's not a lot of lacing, this isn't a sticky brew.

Aroma is light roast, with some essence of warming spice. There wasn't a lot of fruit or hop in the nose.

The medium roast is the first taste note, semi-sweet chocolate and dark caramel. Then a very nice dark fruit comes up, dark cherries with some sour tartness. The fruit builds with each sip, and enhances the roast very well. There's some warm spice on the finish that, for me, really tied it together.

The mouthfeel is rather lighter than one might expect, but as the fruit fades, there's a nice caramel feel, with that warm spice lingering to the end.

I really enjoyed this one. I think this is a really nice beer to end the evening.

Enjoyed on tap at Hats off to Homebrewers at the Amigoni Urban Winery as well as in a bottle. For the purposes of this review, I will go with the on tap review.

Appearance - Nice and black, with a two finger beige head that dominates the presentation. Cool labeling, awesome concept behind the brew.

Smell - Subdued but excellent. A lot like a porter but much more complex. Dark fruits, big Brady and biscuity malts, Caramel, toffee, And awesomeness. Excellent smell.

Taste - Follows the nose in complexity and quality. Toasty dark breads, malts, hints of dark fruit, and finally a touch of hops. Outstanding layered taste

Mouthfeel - Finishes smooth like a porter with a rich, creamy body, smooth finish, medium carbonation.

Overall - This is a highly recommended, superb beer. Never had a stingo or an English strong ale, but I love this beer. I have drank a unusually high volume of it, oh well. Get with a friend from Kansas City and have them get you this beer ASAP. You won't regret it.

Batch 2012-1. Best by 3-2013. Poured into a tulip. Enjoyed with a friend.

A- Pours a dark brown, with caramel colored highlights. It has 3 fingers of khaki colored head that has a ton of staying power and leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Off to a good start.

S- Very malty on the nose. Russpowell hit the aroma on the head when he said butterscotch that is not overpowering with a hint of molasses.

T- Does not follow the nose exactly, but the flavors are great. Molasses, rich dark malty flavors, with a finish that is akin to sweetened creamed coffee.

M- Solid medium body, moderate amount of carbonation. Slight warming feel from the ABV.

O- Sad this will only be brewed once. A mighty tasty beer.

A: Pours a lovely garnet/brown color. A two finger beige head forms with excellent retention, and the spiderweb looking lace is impressive.
S: Chocolate and toffee sweetness. The chocolate is slightly bitter. Coffee in the nose as well. Some wood aromas in the finish.
T: Follows the nose with a slightly bitter chocolate flavor. Toffee sweetness, bread and biscuit. Very slight tart cherries. Wood lingers. More an more dark fruits come out as this warms.I like it.
M/D: A medium to full body. Good carbonation that is creamy and smooth. So easy and enjoyable to drink. I will finish the bottle in no time. A treat to sip on.

I really enjoy this. Another hit from the Smokestack Series, and a great collaboration as well. If you like Fuller's 1845 or Sam Smith Stingo, this is for you. Something I would highly recommend.

Found this brew on a whim, and poured it into a standard pint glass. Stingo makes a two finger thick off white head, and the body of the brew is dark ruby red in color and cleanly filtered.

The aroma is bready, fruity in the way of dark dried ones, some coffee and dark chocolate, and maybe a hint of vanilla.

Taste wise it's a blend of over ripe orange, chocolate, vanilla, oak, metallic, and kind of earthy.

Feels medium to full in body, ample carbonation, not syrupy at all, but a little warm in the end.

As the strong taste of this British regions ales resonate with cooler weather, the built in complexities and full flavors soothe the palate and satisfy the palate. This is a taste that the masterful brewers at both Boulevard and Pretty Things capture that sure to be the delight of the most staunch British ale connoisseur.

Tawny brown and with slightly more visual viscocity that the average brandy, the beers mohogany hue slowly releases its deeply embedded carbonation and crowns the beer with a dense blanket of tannish foam. Strong retention and lacy rings form as the beer fades, sip after wonderful sip.

Masculine aromas of molasses, brown sugar, and a toasty note that almost introduces coffee create the armatures for the rest of the characterful beer to mount. As the beer opens up, additional scents of dried fruit, wine, and spice emerge.

Mouth coating flavors of rich malt take the shape of toffee, molasses, peanut brittle and brown sugar in the most succulent of way. The delicious and hearty sweetness is jointed by the estery and alcohol flavors of tart cherries, dried apples, apricots, dates, raisins, figs, currants, plumbs, and grapes. The culmination of flavors hark to what's best about holiday fruitcake, except that the spices of the desert are replaced here by the vinous tartness that's normally reserved for oak aged red wines. Don't be surprised to pull additional flavors of chocolate, balsamic, and cider if your taste buds search hard enough.

Medium to full, the beer's creamy bubbles and rich malts create a fuller effect while the tartness and tannin have a thinning effect at the same time. This keeps the beer drinkable despite its richness and complexity. The beer slowly morphs into a pleasant acidity and broadly bitter spice from hops the deeper into finish that you go. An extended aftertaste continues to develop wine notes and stale ale notes in the most pleasant of ways.

There's not many beers that display the more regal "aged" character that makes these rustic ales so charming. As was common in mid 18th century pubs, the blend of young and stale ale seems to be reliably captured in this collaborative Stingo.

From the corked bottle into my Notch 0.5 L pint glass. Served along with some fresh baked Irish Soda Bread.

A - deep dark, inky. Foamy head is almost white, lots of foam subsides quickly, leaving behind delightful lacings.
S - sweet malty, milky smell
T - slightly sour on top of a malty flavor. Typical porter hints, burnt malt, liquorice.
M - nicely chunky, with a crisp bite
O - really like this. Well integrated, nothing overwhelming, just tastes good.

I poured the bottle into a tulip glass.

Appearance- Semi transparent, dark brown color with a finger and a half worth of tan head. Fair amount of lacing.

Smell- Nutty malt sweetness with notes of fruit and some yeast.

Taste- Malt flavors and some nuttiness at the start with tart fruit flavors at the finish. Well blended.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied and crisp. Large amount of prickly carbonation.

Overall- Good beer. It reminded me of a brown ale mixed with wild ale. I will be having this one again.

P:  Pitch black abyss crowned with a full finger of creamy cappuccino froth. Beautiful lacing on the sides that cling and won't let go.  

S:  Roasted malts, bourbon and coke, dark bread yeast, bubblegum, and banana taffy. 

T/M:  Sweet dark fruits, aged oak, roasted toffee, candied malt, bubblegum, brown sugar, flat coke and bournon, luke warm bitter breakfast coffee, and banana with clove. Finish is creamy and lingers smoldered grains,aged oak and subtle souring yeast at the end.  The overall palate has an aged tone to it which works well. 

O:  So excited to see this on tap.  I have a bottle at the house but jumped on the opportunity to review on tap. As expected this is a huge winner in my book. Excellent complex flavors, roasty, bready, great alcohol flavor and a surprising sour kick at the end. Be sure to try this you won't be let down. Cheers!

Pour - Dark chestnut brown. Lacey white head that leaves a thin rim about the glass.

Smell - heavy caramel, coffee, with a hint of chocolate reminds me of almost a stout.

Taste - GOOD! Light on the tongue, notes of coffee. The description on the bottom "a hint of tartness against a rich, malty background"

Another win for boulevard. Seems like a great mix with Pretty Things. Definitely something to pick up unless you hate coffee beers.

Bubbly, dirty white and thick goes the froth on this one. Retention is excellent. Color is dark brown.

Sweet in aroma with an almond nuttiness, vinegar and a wisp of smoke floating through.

Flavor involves a distinct and eclectic mix of grain and nuts, dark fruits, some tanginess, and a burnt woodiness followed by an afterthought of hops.

Dry for the most part with alcohol noticeable only in the aftertaste. Mouth-feel is light to medium.

Imaginative brew that leads to another big win for Boulevard.

Batch 2012 - 2; Best by 3 2013

Served in a Delirium Tremens shaped-glass.

A: Poured a luscious, brown-maroon color, with a massive mocha head that, like most of Boulevard's brews, stuck around throughout the session.

S: Sort of a caramel-nut duo, much like a Nut Brown. No sign of stray yeast, but I'll keep searching.

T: This ALMOST had a Belgian quality to it, but not quite. It's almost as if someone took a Quad and stripped it on the "funk" part of the Belgian experience, then left it to be. Nutty, caramely, butterscotchy, and with only a sourdough bread bill to provide sweetness. After a few sips, I got more dark fruit.

M: Just enough bitterness to add some much needed complexity. The lacing was ridiculous, and this was INSANELY drinkable... even gulpable.

O: I've never tried a Smokestack Series brew that has sucked. This one continues that trend.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, Batch 2012-2, best by 03-2013. Served in a DFH Signature glass, the beer pours a dark brown color with some reddish tints. There's about an inch tan head that stays around for a while, and also a good amount of lacing. The aroma is sweet and fruity, it smells like dark fruit (raisins, plums, cherries), nuts, caramel, coffee, and some brown sugar. The brew tastes like sweet and tart dark fruit (cherries, raisins, plums, red grapes), caramel, brown sugar, molasses, nuts, oak, and some chocolate. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's creamy and has a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked this beer, and I'm glad I got to try it. Definitely worth a try if you come across it.

My neighbor, bless his soul, bought a bottle of Stingo over from downstate IL. The beer pour a dark cloudy brown with red hue. The head is a off white bubbly head that is not leaving much lace. The smell has malt and good earthy tones. The taste is big...and strong. There is a prevalent malt base and hints whiskey sweet mash. There is also a healthy bitterness which perhaps is why it's named Stingo. The mouthfeel is a full body beer with big carbonation. Overall it's a big beer to sip....not to session.

Split a 750 ml poured into a Pretty Things glass.

A: pours a beautiful dark brown with two fingers of slightly browned head that dissapate slowly and leavs some beautiful lacing.

S: dark breadyness, light notes of chocolate, caramel, toffee and coffee, a slight Belgian soapyness, and as the beer warms I begin to pick up on the slight tartness described on the label. There is a nice nuttyness to the aroma as well.

T: the tartness is deffinatly more present in the flavor profile, adding slight notes of tart apple/pear and hints of cherry. The backbone is deliciously malty. I also get a light bannana note, I'm assuming from the yeast. The backbone is dark bread, and a beautiful nuttyness, deffinatly reminds me of a brown ale, along with notes of chocolate, coffee, caramel And toffe. This is deffinatly a unique and delicious brew. Beautifully complex and well balanced.

M: medium body with a creamy mouthfeel and sharp medium carbonation that stings the tounge towards the finish. A touch dry on the finish with a slightly tart aftertaste.

O: this is a very unique and delicious beer. Wonderfully complex and well balanced, refreshing and malty. Reminds me very much of a delicious brown ale with a touch of tartness thrown in. Very awesome.

Poura a clear, dark burgundy color with a rather large tan bubbly head. As the foam recedes there are some fairly long lasting rings of sticky lace on the glass.

Aromas begin quite dark and earthy with dark carmelized maltiness, sweeter butterscotch and some lighter fruity notes. As it warms you get some mild floral hops and some earthy, musty, oaky, leathery notes.

The tastes begin with heavy on the malts highlighted by toasted nuts, sweet toffee and caramelized sugars. Light, tart, almost tangy fruity flavors in the background with emerging leather and oak once again.

M - It was crisp and smooth. The mouthfeel is meadium to full-bodied with medium carbonation. Finish is a little heavy/chewy with some warming alcohol.

Overall this was a very tasty beer, but it should really be shared because of the intense and complex nature of the flavor profile. Glad I bought a few to see how it changes in 6 months or so.

I really enjoyed this collaboration with Boulevard and Pretty Things. A wonderfully rich aroma with scents of roasted walnuts, brown sugar, and rum. Beautifully balanced in the mouth, there are flavors of sour cherries (though not a sour beer, there is a distinct tartness), caramel malts, and brandy. The 8.5% isn't hidden, and there's a slight boozy character to the beer, but I personally felt it was balanced out by a strong malt profile and subtle hop background.

I highly recommend the beer: it's a winner.

Poured from a caged and corked 750ml bottle into a pint glass

A: Pours a fairly dark mahogany color with a nice red tint when held up to the light. There is a huge, foamy tan head with long retention. Heavy curtains of lace.

S: A deeply malty smell. A good combination of bread, sweet molasses and toffee, some light toasted/roasted notes and a bit of medium fruit: cherries and raisins. Also a decent earthy quality.

T: A similar but expanded malt profile compared to the aroma. Some darker chocolate and maybe even a hint of chocolate. Light vinous character as I savor. Some brighter fruit flavor, notably cherry. The finish is fruity with a little bit of earthy pine.

M: Medium bodied with low, foamy carbonation. Slightly sticky with well-hidden alcohol.

O: Very solid. Some unique earthy malt flavors, sweeter malt, bright fruit and vinous character make this easy drinking beer fun to drink.

Poured from tap into pint at bridge in stl. Pours a deep ruby brown with a finger of off white head. Nice bitter hop and sweet toffee aromas. Taste is really nice. Dark fruit, fig, raison, then finishes with a coffee! Really great. A bit boozey but thats ok with me.
Really good brew. Highly recommend this one. I bet this would age amazingly.

A - Pours a murky deep brown, light tan head. Not much lacing. Not pretty to look at but it's the style.

S - Sweet malts and slightly burnt caramel. Not picking up much else.

T - Dry dark fruits, malty, caramel & some odd yeast. Ends with a sourish note.

M - In between light & medium body with high carbonation.

O - I like this collaboration. They made this style a little more exciting than I'm used to.
