Notes/Commercial Description:
Collaboration #3 Stingo was brewed using traditional English ingredients. A variety of ale and specialty malts from Yorkshire are at the forefront; their pronounced roasty aroma and flavor contain hints of toffee, cocoa and bread crust. English hop varieties contribute subtle herbal, peppery qualities. The beer was brewed in batches; some was fermented on oak, some was fermented normally, and some was allowed to sour in the mash tun before being transferred to a fermenter. Boulevard’s brewers, along with Dann and Martha Paquette of Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project, then blended the batches until desired levels of wood and tartness were achieved for the final product.

Poured from a cork & caged 750 mL bottle in to a Brewer's Art goblet. Moderate hand. Label reads, batch 2012-3. Best by 03-2013, but I'm not too worried.

A: Dark reddish-brown with 1 finger khaki head. Ok retention. Light lacing. Pretty nice.

S: A bit light overall, but malty fruit, raisin, dried cherry, slight spice. Quality is nice, but subdued. Maybe the age?

T: Nice tartness up front with cherry tang and mild spice notes. Some cracked pepper. This yields, somewhat late, to a smooth, kinda oaky, roasted malt with a semi-dry finish. Nice chocolate in the finish and aftertaste. Some lingering tartness which is very nice. Admittedly fairly boozy for 8.5% ABV, but I don't mind. Seems appropriate.

M: Moderate carbonation with moderate body. Neither here nor there, but pretty smooth, I'd say.

O: So, I was a bit skeptical out of the gates, but this one definitely grew on me. Thinking back, it was the same with the Samuel Smith Stingo. I takes a few big pulls to really get into these, but in the end I thoroughly enjoy the mildly sour/malty fusion. I wish more breweries put these out.

Prost!

Poured from 750mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: rich, dark amber-brown hue with ruby highlights. Body appears to be relatively free of haze and the head is a thick finger of pillowy tan foam with a nice retention. Quite lovely.

Smell: raisins, prunes, pears, raw tobacco, dust and alcohol. I'm completely sold!

Taste: kind of tart and astringent at first; the deeper, darker flavors appear on the palate over time and in the aftertaste. Dank and appealing, though not quite so much as the aroma.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess. Not as nice as I would have liked, but good nonetheless.

Overall: a tasty beer, although I do wish the flavor were a little bit more like the aroma. That wonderful aroma!
