American Double / Imperial Pilsner |  7.70% ABV

Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
With its classic recipe and impeccable craftsmanship, this summer seasonal is a study in delicately balanced contrasts. Up front, Pilsner malt makes a clear yet restrained statement, answered by the steady, harmonious hum of Saaz hops, traces of which linger in the dry, crisp finish.

Served from a bomber bottle into a small snifter, this pours a hazy light gold/straw color topped by a moderately durable head and average (at best) lacing.

Light body; crisp; medium-high carbonation.

This imp. pilsner is stronger and more yeasty than your everyday pilsner, but retains the malty base, Saaz hops and dry, crisp finish. Higher ABV is partially hidden.

A: Pours a clear golden yellow color with 2 fingers of bubbly head that fizzles out within a minute

S: Pilsner malts, a light graininess, some breadiness, and lightly earthy and spicy Saaz hops

T: Starts off with a very light husk and the pilsner malts followed by a light bitterness accompanied by earthy and bready notes. Finishes with a light lingering bitterness and some grain

M: Light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: A solid American imperial pilsner. An easy drinker for the summer months that provides just enough kick. Lager fans should seek this one out

Batch No: 13149-3; best by 2/14.

I totally dig regular pilsners but haven't found an imperial version to be to my liking. I love Boulevard though, so here goes:

Served in a Port City tulip.

A: Looked very inviting: Poured very crisp and damn near clear, with a soft chill haze, and not much head to speak of.

S: Sorta smelled like a combination of honey, spent grains, and Cheerios. Not bad.

T: I appreciated the fact that this wasn't a syrup bomb and it was medium-bodied, but overall, this was kind of one-dimensional and infinitely forgettable. Very clean finish.

M: Low on carbonation, but not nearly as low as I though it might, but then again, this IS Boulevard, the king of the suds. No lacing left on the glass whatsoever.

O: I would have this again if it were shoved in front of my face, but wouldn't actively seek it out.

Very pale golden colored body looked very much like a typical Pilsner, but the carbonation was much more lively, and made it look like a club soda. The beer initially had little head, but the fizz formed it soon afterwards. The smell was clean and malt, with a hint of grass as well as lemon. The taste was much more intense than I expected, with a flavors of of honey, white pepper, banana, bubblegum, and a hint of lavender and blonde raisins. The beer was light in the mouth and had a peppery aftertaste. This was definitely quite interesting.
