Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. In the glass, dark and turbulent clouds gather. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a veritable monsoon of flavor, with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of hops, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

750 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 7.7%. Dark reddish brown colour, huge beige head. Lovely malty aroma, mild roasty notes, hints of dark berries, also fruity and piney hops. The flavour is slightly on the sweet side, with moderate roast malts and fruity and piney hops. Medium bitter finish.

Pours a dark brown with a finger and a half of khaki foam. Head retention is good. Aroma is dank, sticky, herbal hops and grainy, dense bread for malts. Flavor profile is less sticky, and a little more bold in the malt regard. Dank, herbal, floral, zesty hops open up with bready, nutty, roasty malts quickly sweeping and soothing the tongue. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a velvety, fuzzy effervescence. Overall, solid through and through, with the initial hops being a bit pungent on the nose.

Black/brown color.

Huge khaki head-be careful pouring! Frothy lace.

Slight hop nose, not much smell.

Medium thin mouthfeel.

Slight citrus hops in a creamy setting. Odd but quaffable.

Treated as an imperial version, this was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a black color with a good finger’s worth of white to off white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Moderate stringy to speckled lace. The aroma takes in some sweet barley/oatiness rubbing against some spicy rye. Sly blueberries dive in underneath. Roasty coffee beans and some roasted cocoa beans. The flavor blends the sweetness of the barley to the oatiness and brings the spiciness of the rye to glide in for a really nice balance. Cocoa and coffee portions are there but fairly low. Moderate semi-sweet to roasty balance in the aftertaste leading on into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a good sipping quality about it. Moderate carbonation feels good on my tongue. Overall, imperial black IPA hitting all of the right spots and rounding out very nicely. Of course, I’d have this again.

Pours a clear deep brown, heavy with swimming particulates, producing a tall 3+ finger, tan, variously bubbled, foamy, somewhat lasting head that leaves, nice chunky sheets, streaks & motes of lacing. Aroma dark malt, bread, toffee, rye spice & maybe a hint of chocolate with & some hoppy pine. Taste is roast, dark chocolate, & biscuit malts, ample rye spice, notes of toffee, pine, subdued citrus & faint coffee. Alcohol presence is low but manifest as dry bitterness, warmth & spice. Malt forward, developing a sweetness just before hops begin emerge in middle & intensify thru finish into aftertaste where they climax & linger. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation, peppery spice, lightly creamy, dry but clean with some warmth.

Deep brown with foamy dark tan head with great retention. Roasted malt and earthy notes in the aroma. Spicy and roasted coffee with balanced bitterness and chocolate undertones. Light citrus notes. Relatively light, frothy feel.

I feel the aroma is rather flat in this one but the flavor is clear and easy. Not the hop wallop as it's described perhaps because this bottle was near the end of it's shelf life but a very nice blend of flavors and easy to drink.

cloudy, dark opaque. thick tan head. nose; wheat crust and hops... maybe some slight citrus hints. there's supposedly a grain orgy going on in this bottle (barley, wheat AND rye) and it shows - this is a big "liquid bread" beer. taste; big earthy toasted grain backbone rounded out with cocoa, hops and citra zest notes. the rye definitely shows up a bit dry and spicy on the end. not my favorite style, but it's about as engaging and solid as the black ale style gets.

Very good for the style, I'm just not a fan of it. I'm not sure why I keep trying these?
